Description

Specialties

A vast array of folk art from Mexico, other parts of Latin America, and beyond. Offerings include woodcarvings, ceramics, Day of the Dead objects, tinwork, retablos, milagros, masks, books, jewelry. The Folk Tree gallery features eight exhibitions annually focusing on art in various media by southern California artists and artists from Mexico. Much of the work shown is figurative in nature, and often inspired by folk art or ethnic art traditions, most prominently those originating in Mexico.

History

Established in 1986.

The Folk Tree is the outgrowth of owner Rocky Behr’s travels to Mexico to learn about the indigenous people, their culture, and their folk arts. She was introduced to the folk arts of Mexico on a tour in 1977. After meeting and establishing friendships with many Oaxacan artisans during subsequent visits, Behr began buying their creations and ultimately opened up The Folk Tree in a historic building just south of Old Town Pasadena. Visitors to The Folk Tree encounter literally thousands of decorative, utilitarian, and ceremonial folk objects, many purchased directly from the artists. A book section helps add to the understanding of the ethnic materials presented. The Folk Tree’s gallery presents several annual exhibitions related to the store’s mission: Saints & Sinners, Day of the Dead, and International Nativities. Through the objects she personally seeks out and in her related activities, Behr hopes to increase knowledge and awareness of the joys of collecting folk arts.
