Breakaway Tours & Event Planning has been uncorking the wine regions of California’s Central Coast since 1995 and is truly the original wine tour company. Created by Jill Tweedie as an owner, operated business. Jill developed a reputation for her passion and dedication to hospitality and personal service. These qualities have been recognized over the years within the wine tourism industry, as she serves on Industry Committees.

This niche business originally concentrated on small personalized touring and was sought after by those looking for a unique, authentic and personalized experience. From there we grew to encompass all aspects of wine and culinary tourism including destination management and are considered the corporate and incentive specialists. We have since expanded to include public tours for those looking for the same quality experience on a per person basis.

I wasn’t sure what I’d signed up for when I agreed to go on an «Access Wine Adventure», other than to enjoy a day out with girlfriends and tasting some new wines but what I got was sooooo much more! The personalized service from Breakaway Tours owner and Level One Sommelier (new word for me), Jill Tweedie, was like a doorway opened into a world I’m not sure I knew existed. It was fun, informative and fascinating but without all the snobbery that I always assumed went hand in hand with understanding wine making and all the variables that go into it. Our winery guides were as enthusiastic as they were down to earth, and those attitudes became infectious throughout the day as we laughed and tasted our way through the Santa Lucia Highlands:) Our gourmet picnic lunches hit the spot, and kept the buzz at bay long enough to pull into our last winery and still enjoy the wines and the views. If you’ve ever had a curiosity about the «wine world» then I encourage you to take your own Access Wine Adventure with Breakaway, as it doesn’t disappoint.

Recently went on the distillery trail tour with Breakaway tours. Their site choices were spot on. The day was filled with great food, great spirits, and great information. Breakaway Tours created a thoughtful, fun, and interesting lineup of distillery stops that did not disappoint! When it comes to tours, you certainly want guides who know more than you and who can give you that «inside scoop» on the wine and spirits industry. Not only did these gals do that with flying colors on a recent Paso Distillery Tour, but they also made the experience fun as well as informative. Relax, laugh, let your hair down but also be ready to learn a little or a lot (depending on what you want to know). Ask questions or just hang out and chat about life… a mix of both make for a tour that perfect balance of fun yet educational… this is the Breakaway difference. Our stops to Wine Shine, ReFind, the Fish Gaucho bar, and KROBAR were incredible. In all, I’d describe the tour in three words: authentic, relaxed, and unforgettable!

We had the best time with our guides and I’m pretty sure the had fun as well.
We asked our driver/​guide if we please could stop at Sextant winery because we love their wines… he said Sextant was already on the menu… happy us!
We even talked him into going back to Sextant after the last winery to get some mor bottles… fantastically awesome service!
Our second time using Breakaway tours and most certainly not the last!

This was our second outing with Breakaway Tours to the Edna Valley region. The first tour was very good, which led us back to Breakaway Tours. This tour was excellent thanks to a great tour guide, Braam. Braam’s knowledge of the growing area, the wines and the vineyards is second to none. Braam went above and beyond to make sure that we enjoyed the wineries and the total experience. We learned that we were tasting, not just drinking wine. He showed us the proper way to smell and to taste the wine. I have become a fan of Pinot Noir. Breakaway Tours has improved their fleet and the food has improved as well. Overall great experience and we plan to make this an annual event. We had a ton of fun, we hit perfect weather and the countryside is beautiful this time of year.

What a wonderful experience! Can’t say enough for how Jill, Monica, and our great driver all went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our group had the best wine tasting experience possible. Jill customized the tour with three very specific and distinct wineries to reflect three distinct French style regions, the Rhone, the Cabernet and the Bordeaux. It really was special to spend time at such different places. Pence Ranch, Vincent Vineyards and Andrew Murray (formerly Curtis) really showcased their varietals. Such a treat to meet the owner at Vincent and play the fun name that grape game in his special «Tribute to the Rat Pack» barrel room. I truly enjoyed conversing with our driver and he kept pace with our large group of ladies! He was attentive and professional! There was no issue that Breakaway couldn’t and didn’t attend to from day one of booking through the aftermath of an unhappy customer who came to the conclusion that our driver somehow didn’t keep track of her bottle properly. Now while I don’t see how that is the fault of the tour company, they remained ever the quintessential professionals trying to help this poor woman resolve her very vocal dilemma. Simply going back herself the next day while still in the area to pick up the ‘missing’ bottle was all it took, really. Herding cats! Again, thanks to Breakaway for calling on her behalf to let them know she was coming. It was clearly just an oversight at the vineyard. Keep it chill, we’re on the Central Coast! Will recommend this company without fail to anyone wanting a really special wine tasting experience, not just a DD. THANK YOU Jill, thank you everyone at Breakaway, especially our driver! Cheers until next time indeed!

I booked a tour for my wife’s and my anniversary for a Saturday on the Wednesday before and receive a call on the day before our tour that it had been sold out and they weren’t sure why it still let me purchase our tour on their website. No chance of another tour on this weekend, and our flights and hotel are already booked. Could have received a heads up the day after I booked it to make some rearrangements but didn’t so now I’m left to make some last minute decisions on a busy weekend. Haven’t had a personal experience with Breakaway yet but a little bummed out by my first. I booked it based on their amazing Unilocal reviews and 5 star backing. Unfortunately, I’ll have to figure out something else.

Don’t let the driver keep your wine for you.
In a nutshell, this company took 14 of us to 3 great wineries from 1pm-​5pm last Saturday. At Vincent, we got to sit at a long dining table that was immaculately set in the barrel room for our tasting and it included olives, cheese, bread, nuts and a great guess the wine game, not to mention the best wine of the trip. And, great hosts. It was fabulous.
The problem came when our driver dropped us off at the hotel and there was a $ 55 bottle of wine missing. At the vineyard, our orders were taken separately and charged on the iPad. When we asked where our wine was upon leaving we were told that our driver had told the vineyard that we would take all the wine and put it into the back of the tour bus. Not at our request, not at the vineyard’s request, but on his own. So we asked him about it and he said yes, I have all your wine. We made one more stop and then were back at our hotel. We had ordered 12 bottles and only 11 arrived. We noticed right away, discussed it with the driver who asked us when we were leaving. Monday. He said he would call us Sunday and get it straightened out. Never heard from him again. Emailed and called the tour company. Never called me back, but did email with a short, curt blow off, too bad.
We had to awkwardly ask everyone in the group to check their credit card online. We were all charged for a total of 12. The bottle was missing.
We spent all day Sunday, during our vacation, trying to call, email, stressing about it and trying to get this straightened out. Then, we had to drive back to the vineyard ourselves where they were more than gracious and gave us a bottle.
I’m giving this place 3 stars because the wineries they lined up were good. Pence, Vincent and Andrew Murray, although I must say at Andrew Murray we had to sit outside in the cold at 4pm and were freezing. I took away 2 stars because of the worst customer service ever. They could have sent us a nicer email or given us a call, but only sent email and it wasn’t very nice. For 129.00 per person, we expected better customer service.
Lesson learned, don’t trust your driver to store your wine for you in the back where you can’t see it.

As a Bay Area resident I always thought the group wine tours would take you to commercialized spots and provide an unpersonalized experience. Breakaway has completely changed my opinion. We wanted to explore the area but didn’t quite have enough people or funds to do a private limo. But I would prefer to use them regardless. We had four adults in addition to the three of us, providing an intimate experience when we visited the wineries. Service was door to door to each of our hotels, the driver Ray was entertaining without being intrusive, and everyone we were with joined multiple memberships out of the wineries we visited, which says something about quality of their selection. Lunch was laid out on a beautiful patio and included delicious gourmet sandwiches, sides and desserts from a local bistro (not a cheese try from the supermarket). They really try to go above and beyond to ensure your trip is special. I will no doubt use them next time in town!

Robin and the crew at Breakaway are absolutely fabulous! Not only is Robin incredibly knowledgable about wines in general, she knows the Central Coast wine scene inside and out! I brought relatives on this tour thinking that they would get a great overview of Edna Valley wines. Our wine guide for the day was Braum. I was very dissapointed! For the $ 110, Braum did not tell us anything about the wine region or the wineries… he hardly spoke at all! Kudos to the people we were with who made the trip fun but I absolutely would NOT recommend this wine tour company if you are looking for more than a taxi ride.

I had my bachelorette weekend about a month ago and keep forgetting to write a review for breakaway tours! Which is annoying because they did a fabulous job! Robin who set things up for us was always so kind and willing to help. Our driver (I believe his name was Fred) was so kind and patient with us. I will definitely be recommending them and using them again!

Had a wonderful time last weekend with 21 of my best friends :). Ray, who was our driver, went well above what you would expect from a driver. We’ve been touring Paso for the past 7 years or so, and this was, by far, our best transportation! Can’t wait to use them again next year.

Breakaway tours was our host for our Valentine’s Day weekend getaway. There was an uncontrollable mishap in the beginning of the day and the company went over the top to make up a little bit of lost time and the day was fantastic. Our guides were friendly and fun, and the lunch was delicious. The wineries that we went to in Paso Robles were beautiful and if you bought a bottle the tastings were free.
I would definitely use Breakaway tours again and would recommend them to friends:)

Breakaway tours hosted us on a super tasty winery tour with five ladies and another group of four in one big van.
We toured EOS, Eberly, Bianchi and Tobin James. Lunch was included and helped keep the wine buzz in check with its salad and sandwich… Haha thanks for that
The best part of our tour was our guide Steve! He was always available, helpful and hilarious! I couldn’t say enough nice things about this guy… Thanks Steve… We love you!

If you have absolutely zero time to plan a wine tasting tour around Paso Robles I highly recommend placing the planning in the very capable hands of the folks at Breakaway Tours. They planned the perfect tour to four fabulous wineries for my bachelorette party of 11 ladies. We definitely weren’t your rowdy bunch but our wonderful driver Ray made sure we all stayed hydrated and even got creative with our schedule when we decided we wanted a bit more time at the group favorite winery, Le Vigne.
If you are having reservations about using the catered lunch they offer. DON’T. It was the most fabulous lunch I have ever had!
And all around amazing experience!
Side note — Ray is a rockstar! He drove all the way back to our rental home in Cayucos to return one of my bridesmaid’s hat the day after our tour. Amazing customer service and a wonderful man!

We planned a 30-​person company trip and Breakaway Tours handled our wine tasting adventure. Well, it was actually a zip-​line and then wine tasting adventure.
First of all, the staff was excellent to deal with and the guide throughout our day was top notch. Everyone had a perfect time and I can’t recommend them enough. They had everything coordinated and planned and it was clear they were very experienced with this sort of thing.
So we started the day zip-​lining. I’m beyond terrified of heights/​falling, but since I know I would never jump out of a plane or bungee jump, I told myself I was going to zip-​line and that was it. Long story short… I did and there’s even a YouTube video of my first attempt. There are four different zip-​lines and the first one is the longest and highest. So once that is out of the way, you’re good to go.
After a couple hours of zip-​lining, it’s off to the wineries. We did three with lunch in the middle. If you’re looking for a group winery tour with experienced experts and a little adventure, Breakaway Tours is a good call.
