History

Established in 1982.

USA Karate was founded by Larry Sullivan at 36 East Ave Ext, Pawtucket, RI in 1982. Since then its has been affiliated with several organizations such as Fred Villari’s Studios of Self Defense, Nick Cerio’s Kenpo, and United Studios of Self Defense. The school was purchased in 2000 by Tony Abatecola and remains a member of the Sullivan’s USA Karate Organization. In 2005, The school was relocated to its present location at 124 Broad Street, where we now provide an exceptional profession training environment complete with changing rooms, fitness gym, reception area with WIFI, proshop, free off-​street parking, and central air conditioning.

Business Owner

Shihan Tony started training in January of 1990 in the Arts of Shaolin Kempo/​Karate/​Jiu-​Jitsu. He earned his Black Belt under Thomas Sullivan (5^th Dan) in June of 1995. In July of 1997, he started training in the art of Kenpo under Hanshi Larry Sullivan (10^th Dan) here at USA Karate. He is a certified master instructor and tournament head judge. He currently holds the following Black Belt Ranks: 5^th Degree Black Belt in Sullivan’s American Kenpo Karate, 4^th Degree Black Belt in Nick Cerio’s Kenpo Karate, and a 2^nd Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo/​Karate/​Jui-​Jitsu.

Shihan Tony also served on Active Duty in the Rhode Island Army National Guard. His military awards and decorations include the Army Meritorious Service Medal, 3 Army Commendation Medals, 3 Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Master Recruiting Badge, and the Career Counselor Badge. He currently serves Part time in the Governor’s Own, 88^th Army Band, RI Army National Guard as a Team Leader.
