History
Established in 1993.
Chileno Valley Ranch has been in Sally Gale’s family since 1862, and she is the fifth generation to farm this land. The Gale’s have completely renovated the historic farmhouse and restored the barns and outbuildings. 200 rose bushes and 400 apple trees, along with a lush garden of perennials and annuals, fill the ranch, which covers 600 acres. In 2000, Mike and Sally entered into an Agricultural Conservation Easement with Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT), permanently protecting the ranch from development and preserving it for agriculture.

Business Owner
Mike and Sally Gale do not come to ranching naturally, although you could say that ranching is in Sally’s blood, as her family has been ranching in Marin County for five generations. It was through Sally’s family that your hosts came to own the ranch in the later part of the 1980s. Prior to that, they lived in Hawaii, where they raised their three children and were heavily involved in Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling. Neither of their jobs prepared them for ranching; Mike was the administrator of a federal agency and Sally was a pediatric social worker.
Since 1993, Mike and Sally have restored the buildings, fences, water systems, creeks, and native woodlands on the ranch, planted 400 apple trees, started a grass-fed beef business, and served as board members of local organizations such as Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT), Marin Resource Conservation District, Marin Organics, Marin County Farm Bureau, Marin Conservation League, and Marin Farmers Market.
