History

Established in 1973.

The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) was founded in 1973 by Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell, who traveled half a million miles through space and became the 6th man to walk on the moon. During his return flight, Dr. Mitchell, viewing Earth floating freely in the vastness of space, was engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. His transformative experience inspired him to embark on a mission of inner space exploration at the intersection of science and spirit, and he started IONS two years later.

Through frontier laboratory science, transformative education programs, a biennial international conference, a thriving member community, and the beautiful 194-acre EarthRise Transformative Learning Center, IONS inspires hundreds of thousands of people around the world to look inside themselves for the transformative potential we all carry to effect positive change.
