This is a dinky mom and pop type of donut shop. When I first saw it, the thought actually crossed my mind, «Real people make donuts?» Where I grew up the only donut shops were chains. We had Dunkin Donuts, Winchell’s Donut Shop, and later came Krispy Kreme. Despite the«time to make the donuts» claims, these were factory donuts. They just cranked them out. But not this place. This is a mom and pop operation. Now, since I have not yet tried the donuts, my review is more for their water ice. I’ve been here a few times. It’s one of 4 places in a 2 block radius, all on Spruce, that sells water ice. The Aladdin Pizza Shop actually has the best water ice. But they usually have only 3 – 4 flavors, and it’s always a variation of five flavors; Lemon, Cherry, Watermelon, Mango, or Rainbow. After Aladdin, the 48th Street Donut shop has the next best water ice. It’s not as dense and bursting with flavor as Aladdin, but it’s certainly good and tasty in it’s own right. And, they usually have 8 – 10 flavors, which sometimes is enough reason to chose them over Aladdin. For a buck, you can get two flavors in a fairly large sized cup. They have a cheaper size, and couple more expensive sizes that are larger, but I find the buck and two flavors to be just right. One of these days, I need to try one of their donuts. They look pretty darn good.
