History

Established in 2010.

After 13 years of tattooing at the time, Art Machine Productions was started by owner and artist Tim Pangburn (tattooer of 16 years) in a small private studio in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 2011, the studio was moved to it’s permanent location only a mile away, a 2700+ sq.ft. converted warehouse built in 1865 located on the up and coming Frankford Ave. Arts Corridor. Our other artists include: Nick ‘The Tailor’, Ryan Szadyr, Andy Robinson, Bobby Lockhart, John Tarrao, and Ick Abrams.

I started tattooing in 1998 in a small town in South Jersey. I did an old fashioned apprenticeship, with plenty of solder fumes, bleach stained pants, and clown costumes.

Every step in my career has been part of a much larger picture, and has led me to open my own studio. Art Machine Productions is located in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. It is a 2700sf gallery and tattoo studio, with lots of open space and high ceilings. The décor is relaxed, very zen, and inspired by the dichotomy of modern industrial and Eastern religion.

When I’m not in the studio, I can normally be found in the kitchen or the backyard, hanging out with my family or pets, or cooking!

Really great place! Very talented artists, reasonable prices for tattoos, very relaxing place. If you guys stop by there, make sure to check out Bobby Lockhart– he’s one of the best. Just be prepared for long waiting times, though

I recently started my sleeve with Tim and I could not be any happier. The work so far is incredible and Tim was very easy to get along with. I have 2 silhouette pieces done by Ryan Szadyr and they are probably my 2 favorite tattoos that I have, and definitely my most complimented. They are so unique and well done. He is super talkative but I find that makes it a more enjoyable experience and it helps me pay less attention to the pain.
Anyone you go to at Art Machine Productions will give you a great quality tattoo that is worth the money. That’s why it’s one of the only tattoo shops I trust to put something permanent on me.

Great experience. I had Nick do some work on my ribs. I have a job where coming in for a tattoo isn’t feasible during the day. Nick worked with me and figured out a time that would work on relatively short notice. Big fan of his style, background and professionalism. Clean place, in a cool part of town. All the staff here were friendly.

I had a two-​session piece done of my dog and cat by Nick the Tailor. I love it so much. He was able to capture exactly the expressions I wanted, and made them look extremely life-​like. He was also nice, the place is very clean and professional, and the price was reasonable for the high quality. Sorry, but if you want a discount tattoo, you are going to get discount quality. I am planning another large piece with Nick and can’t wait to start.

I don’t have enough good things to say about my experience here.
I wanted a fairly large memorial piece on my back/​shoulder for my grandfather. I am not artistic but I did have sort of an idea of what I was looking for. I really needed an artist to fully realize it. I looked at many many online portfolios and ended up choosing Nick The Tailor. I had a consult with him in early Sept. We worked out what I was talking about, he took good notes and we made the appt for mid November. I think all the artists require a 100 $ deposit to book appts.
I got my tattoo yesterday and I couldn’t be more pleased. Its exactly what I was hoping when I started this process. Large but feminine and really captures the memorial vibe but still very beautiful.
Nick is so nice. He will talk to you but is quiet when concentrating. I like that about him. Also Once i needed a break to relax and another break to go to the bathroom. He gave me the time I needed and didn’t make me feel like I was being too big of a pain in the butt. He is professional and takes his job seriously. Yeah I had to wait a bit to get an appt with him but frankly that doesn’t seem like a «con» to me. I’d rather go to someone who is good enough TO have that kind of waitlist then just go anywhere and risk the (lifelong) outcome. Also, while slightly on the pricey side, you know what they say… you get what you pay for. This is on your body forever… PAY THE MONEY.
Everyone else I dealt with was nice and helpful too. I didn’t get the «too cool for school» vibe you get at some shops.
I have another tattoo I’m eyeing and will def be going to Nick again when I’m ready. He is top of the line…

Consultation Experience:
I met up with Nick. If consultations were at noon, wouldn’t you try to get something to eat perhaps before hand? Not that him eating while, a bunch of us were waiting in front of him bothered me to any degree. but it was just a bit odd.
*** Just to clarify, I don’t want the guy to starve, but it’s just interesting that the shop doesn’t have a place in the back for staff to take breaks and eat. There’s two big tables in the middle of the room (where he ate) that are directly in front of a few tattooing rooms where most of the curtains were open and so I wasn’t sure if that was such a good place to eat when you’re that exposed to the actual tattooing environment.
He seemed nice and was definitely willing to work with whatever ideas that were flowing. I’ll say this, when we talked over email, he said he charged by piece. When I arrived, he then said he charged by an hour ($ 200/​hr). I wanted to get a cover up done, which was going to be pricey, but I didn’t expect it to be worth an all inclusive paid vacation. He did give another reasonable price, but the concept was not what I originally wanted. It all depends on what you want to «sacrifice» as he said. I get it. Scheduling was another issue. I can’t predict what my schedule is going to be like two months from now, and he does have a «built in clientele.» If you want the best I suppose, I guess you have to wait. I’m sure he does amazing work, but I’m going to hold off until 2017. Maybe he’ll have the availability and I’ll have my finances more in order.

My friend and I wanted decided to get tattoos together while we were in Philadelphia. We were just visiting PA so it was kind of a split decision on our part; however, I did my research and choose this studio because everyone seemed to like it. We were walk-​ins but the man at the front desk was very helpful and set us up right away with an artist. The artist’s name was Dan and he was new. He told us that he’d only been tattooing for a year. He did both of our tattoos and the lines are really crooked. Since this was a vacation tattoo, I’m upset that I won’t be able to go back and get it redone. I’ve no doubt that the studio is great, very clean and professional, but if you decide to go here don’t get tattooed by Dan.

I’m not a cool person who gets tattoos on the regular. For this reason I did a lot of research when choosing a place to get my first tattoo. After much consideration I chose AMP due to their stellar reviews. I chose Nick (the Tailor) as my artist and was put on his waiting list. A month later I went in and got exactly what I was looking for. AMP was clean, the artists were friendly, and it was an overall laid back and relaxed experience. Nick was great and well worth the wait. I’m already planning my next piece with him. If you’re looking for a fun and professional spot for your next tattoo, whether it be your first or your last, check out AMP. Highly recommend!

This is, honestly, one of the most wonderful places I have ever encountered. My story is a little different. I went in and left a deposit for an appointment. In the interim week before my appointment, I completely lost my nerve and decided I wasn’t ready to get a tattoo right at this current time. I called to cancel my appointment, and the artist, Bobby, was SO incredibly sweet, understanding and patient. What amazing customer service!!! When I was there for the initial consultation and appt. set-​up, I observed that the place was spotless, including the bathroom. Everyone was extremely professional and it is obvious that they are running a top-​notch operation. When my time finally comes to get a tattoo, I will not even consider going anyplace else!

I had a horrable, horrable tattoo that needed a cover up. I resercehed places in Philly and decided to check out AMP. I walked in and was very lucky to be seen same day and to get artist Bobby Lockhart. He put his heart and soul into my cover up. Sat there for 4 ½ hours on the chair with one 3 minute break. My cover up turned out better than I could ever have imagined. You ever see a cover up and you can tell it’s a cover up? Well, this one is spectacular. I’ve tried to see the old tattoo underneath and I can’t. I will never go anywhere else for a tattoo and I recommend this place to everyone!!!

I just got my hummingbird tattoo done this past Saturday by Bobby. He’s new to the shop and area so I made the selection solely off his portfolio. It couldn’t be more true to his skill set! I am in awe by the amount of detail and the color pallet he worked with. Pictures do not show its justice! I would and have recommended bobby to all my friends and those looking to get a new tattoo. He’s very kind, patient and focused on perfection.
The shop was also very elegant and unexpected because it was so nice. I have never been nor seen a place as nice as this for a tattoo parlor. Maybe it’s the old warehouse turned modern art piece of a building. The concept works so fluidly and the rest of the associates were just as friendly.
Can’t say enough good things about this place! It deserves every last star!

This Guy Tim Pangburn is absolutely amazing. I wanted a Celtic cross and went to another artist. Long story short by the time it was done it looked like a tombstone. I went to a cover up «specialist» and after 4 hours you could still see the old tattoo and the color was horrendous.
Enter Tim Pangburn. A stone cold assassin. He drew with sharpies free hand and had the whole tattoo done in 3 hours. A cover up of a coverup which looks like an original piece. I have no idea where this guy got his talent but his skills combined with the friendly atmosphere and knowledge made my whole two years in search of my original quest worthwhile. Do not go to anyone else but tim and his associates otherwise you’ll be back for him to fix it later!

It’s been about a year since I received my tattoo from Benji Harris here. It’s amazing. Out of the three tattoos i have it was the cleanliest and easiest tattoo I’ve ever received as well as one of the nicest tattoo artists I’ve dealt with. I definitely intend on going back for more and am constantly handing out their business cards. The atmosphere of the place as well as the genuine like-​ability of all the artists there helps you know that not only are they coworkers but they’re chill friends as well. It’s always helpful when you enjoy going in to work and I can tell that’s exactly what goes on here.
The One downside I can note is the parking in the area for those driving in to get tatted up. But that’s a given in the city of brotherly love. :) just make sure to arrive early for your appointment so you can figure that stuff out.

Owner, artist, gentleman, and steak connoisseur Tim Pangburn has created a great place in Philly to get tattooed. It looks more like a gallery space than your typical tattoo shop which makes it super clean, comfortable, and visually appealing. Amazing, friendly artists. Go get some work done!

When I first stepped into Art Machine, I thought I had the wrong address. The comfy couches in the waiting area and the open and airy feeling are probably what confused me. The space is huge and things are clean and this place seems to run like a well-​oiled machine (one that produces art, hence the name).
I have half a dozen tattoos and had heard about Art Machine from some friends, so I did some research and found Gia, who was willing to cover-​up/​re-​work a flower tattoo on my shoulder that I had done elsewhere in the city. I had never loved the tattoo and it had faded/​smeared and I wanted something fresh and bold. Gia communicated with me over email and I sent her loads of pics of my tat in its current state.
On the day I showed up to receive my new and improved artwork, Gia made me feel at ease, first drawing some improvements on my current tattoo. Then, she literally re-​did the entire thing, adding some new leaves and refreshing the old colors, making them bold and vibrant — exactly what I had wanted.
It’s been a few days since I had my tattoo done by Gia and it looks amazing, even in the healing stages. I’ve received so many compliments on the colors and the artwork and every time I look in the mirror, I feel happy about my tattoo as opposed to just «meh,» which is how I felt before Gia did her magic on it.
I’ve definitely found my new tattoo spot.

I am 31 years old and for the last 10 years I have wanted a specific tattoo on my forearm. For some reason I wasn’t ready, or the time wasn’t right. I don’t live in Philly, I actually had never even been there until yesterday. As soon as my flight got on the ground I knew it was the day.
I did my research on tattoo shops in the area and came across Art Machine Productions. Their website had some very impressive work displayed, as well as this Unilocal page. I decided this was my spot. When I arrived I was greeted by Nick Panzer. He was extremely friendly and made me feel comfortable (as I was slightly anxious). We talked about what I wanted and he drafted me up the PERFECT tattoo. I was getting the work done moments later.
I have a very unique story behind what I had done and Nick seemed very interested in hearing it. I had a great conversation with him which made me enjoy the tattoo process even more. If you are looking for amazing work by some great people then I HIGHLY recommend you visit Art Machine Productions.

The artists in this shop continue to kick out incredible, mind-​blowing work. I’ve sent a few friends here to get work done and I am so proud to finally have an incredible piece of my own. You could close your eyes and point to a drawing and walk out with an incredible tattoo.

I have a few tattoos, but I don’t look «cool» and I get really really anxious to walk into tattoo shops. I’ve definitely been snobbed on before at other shops but there’s nothing but great vibes in this place.

I just started going to art machine productions because my tattoo artist starting working there. His name is Resp, and he has done the majority of my work. I will never go to any one else ever again. I have known him for about 5 – 6 years. Not only does he do amazing work, we have developed a great friendship. Even when I first starting going, he always makes you feel comfortable and will take your idea and bring it to life. He talks to you during the process to make it a great appointment.
The atmosphere in the shop is very pleasant. Everyone is always so nice and welcoming. Great place to go to for high quality work. All the artists are very good and their job. Def would recommend this place. :)
