Bell’s Bike Shop

Not only did I find the exact bike I was looking for, I found it at Bells for $ 100 less then the manufacturers web site. So I saved money plus my bike was assembled and properly fit by professionals and ready to ride home. As a bike newbie, the amount of knowledge I gained from purchasing at a local bike shop was invaluable.
My experience at Bells was beyond perfect. I am so glad I decided to check them out and I am confident you will be as well.

Great shop. Steve takes the care to make sure your bike is for you, fits you properly and suits your riding style. He won’t sell you a bike if it’s not the perfect bike for you. Their mechanics are first rate, conscientious and truly care about your bike and their work.

My first experience at Bells was great. There were multiple guys working at the shop when I was there explaining a repair that I needed on my bike. They were all helpful, engaged and nice. There was only friendly, good vibes here and I felt they genuinely cared about my small repair that I needed. I will definitely go back when I need something again in the future.

I have taken my bike here about 3 – 4 times and each time the staff are friendly and helpful. They answer all my questions (which I have a lot) and even teach me about my bike here and there. A great bike shop!

I went here a few weeks ago to check out their bikes. I just wanted a simple bike to run errands and go to dinner in center city with some friends– nothing crazy. They recommended a bike that cost $ 450 which was just too steep for me. So I got a bike at Target and attempted to put it together myself. Long story short my friend came over to help me put the front wheel on and said I put the handle bars on backwards, so he unscrewed 2 screws and flipped it around (took maybe 3 min), but we didn’t have the right tools to tighten the stem. I called Bells to see if they would tighten it and a very nice guy told me they would and to just stop by. However when I got there, a different guy (same one who quoted me $ 450) told me the stem was on backwards. I then told him how my friend thought it was backwards too and just turned the handle bars instead of the whole stem. He then proceeded to tell me that it was a serious fix and that I needed a whole front rebuild which would take «at least a week». Mind you my friend flipped the handle bars removing 2 screws in less than 3 min, the stem was not tightened and this was a brand new bike! I stormed out and randomly found a bike shop on 8^th and Dickinson about to close. They had it all fixed by 10am the next morning for $ 10. I feel like the guy was trying to be a jerk because I didn’t buy the $ 450 bike from them. So if you’re not an avid, serious biker do not go here because they treat you like crap.

It pains me to write this review but I gave Bell’s a chance. I sent them the exact words below via their website and received no response. +1 star for at least leaving my bike in the condition it arrived in.

Terrible experience. Tempted to write a poor Unilocal review but willing to hear an explanation before writing.
I dropped off my mountain bike on Thursday, June 25^th to have the disc brakes serviced. I was informed that it would take a few days for a part to be ordered but was given no other indication of anticipated delays. I called repeatedly over the course of the next month to inquire about the status of my bike. Each time there was a different excuse and was even told that it would be ready Thursday, July 23^rd or Friday, July 24^th. When I called earlier this week it was still not fixed and earlier today (August 1^st) I left your shop with my bike in the same state as it arrived a month earlier; two days before I leave the country for 3 weeks (i.e., I literally could not wait any longer.)
Bells is the closest bike shop to my house; I always try to support my local bike shop and often make recommendations to friends. In a city of great bike shops, of which I’ve had many good experiences, I’m disappointed that I won’t be visiting your shop again. I’m also tempted to write a negative review on Unilocal.If I had read a review indicating 1+ month wait times I would have never dropped my bike off at your shop. At the same time, I know that negative reviews can be really damaging for businesses and want to provide you with an opportunity to explain or remedy the situation before posting a review.

Mission: to have my handlebars switched out for bullhorns and outfitting them with in-​line brake levers. First, I browsed prices for levers all over the city, and the price at Bell’s blew everyone else away. They do a substantial online business, and I was able to browse their ebay store and then pick it up in the shop. I brought my bullhorns in to size the diameter and get the right product, and the man who helped me sold me a pair that he said was appropriate. I opted to not get installation on the spot, because I thought I could get a better price — but I was wrong. I was quoted more to put on the handlebars than the cost of a complete tune up at Bell’s. So, lesson learned — and loyalty earned. The guy who took care of me and my bike seemed physically exhausted and I know they get busy and have repair orders backed up, but he happily prioritized my case and called me in an hour. When I got on and rode away, I nearly cried; never have I remembered my bike riding so buttery. I started giggling as I glided down Passyunk, feeling like a new girl with a new toy.
Always call ahead to see what the situation is as far as how much work they are laden with, what they have in stock, and never assume you can pop in and out. But DO assume that you will leave satisfied in every way, shape and form. These are not elitist bike snobs — but they ARE serious, and it shows

I’ve been to Bell’s a couple times now, for simple repairs and bike accessories (if that’s the word). Their services are very reasonably priced and they are always prompt! The place does have a bit of a bike elitist vibe to it, but that being said, I also really trust their expertise. I will continue to use Bell’s!

Was looking for a new bike shop in my ‘hood after moving from the Art Museum area. Found Bell’s on Unilocal and couldn’t be happier with the service! I brought my bike in for a tune up and had her back a week later. The staff was friendly and not at all condescending. They even remembered my name when I came in. Glad to find a neighborhood shop whose staff is friendly, knowledgeable and personable. I’ll definitely be back!

These guys were super helpful when my bicycle was totaled. They took it and wrote me a letter stating as much. I then bought my new bicycle there and they fixed it up nicely for me. I had to go back to have my seat adjusted they were happy to do it on the spot for no charge. It’s a small store and they are not open on Sundays, but they are friendly.

After finding out that Bell’s Bike Shop was the only place that sold Public Bikes in the city, I was a bit annoyed to find out that I’d have to not go to one of the 5 or 6 bike shops located closer to my house. I had my heart set on the Public C1. I called them up, they said they had it in stock, AND would honor the June sale prices advertised online!!!
I went in on a Wednesday night (they have convenient nighttime hours) and test rode a Public of a similar model. They offered to have the bike I wanted built by the next night, but I opted to come in on a Saturday. I just needed to make a small deposit.
Frank was friendly and helpful and not snobby at all. I’ve had issues with hardcore bike snobs in shops before, since I like city bikes/​not racing road bikes. When I came back on Saturday to pick it up, he helped me pick out accessories like a bell and lock and even ordered a matching rack for my bike to be installed at a later time.
After my experience, I’d highly recommend Bell’s, even though it’s a bit of a walk from my house.

There was no machismo when i asked for parts for my bike, only shop in philly so far that has treated me like a normal human, not tried to screw me, and sold quality products

If you want quick, great service by guys that aren’t hipster bike snobs, then go here. Also, it seems like everything from labor to parts to bikes are about 20% less than if you were to go to another shop.

Not long after moving to the city, I finally admitted to myself that, yes, I really do need a bike.
I know nothing about all the bikes the cool kids in the city ride. I borrow my dad’s standard beach cruiser of a bike once a year while on vacation. That’s how much I know bikes.
I was really intimidated at the thought of walking into any bike shop with virtually no knowledge of anything. However, I wandered into Bell’s one afternoon after work, and I’m really glad I did.
Bell’s has what I’d consider to be a pretty wide selection of bikes and parts compared to other shops I have visited in the area. Their staff is engaging and knowledgeable, and not at all intimidating to someone who is new to the world of bikes.
Frank, one of Bell’s employees, was extremely helpful and not at all intimidating. He helped me find a bike within my budget that is perfect for someone like me who is just starting out riding a bike in the city.
Frank was also happy to answer some of the more important questions I had about purchasing a new bike («Does it come in other colours? Are those fun coloured tires over there just like regular tires? Can I put a basket on the front for snacks? Would it be socially unacceptable for me to buy that children’s helmet that’s shaped like a tiger instead of an adult’s helmet?»)
I tested out a Torker U-​District and really liked it. It’s a basic one speed, which is exactly what I wanted. After going home and doing some research, I was happy to find that the prices Bell offered seemed beyond fair and actually competitive to what the bike can go for elsewhere.
After such a positive experience, I went back and bought my bike the very next day! Frank was there again to help me out, as well as select a lock and a helmet. It’s only been a few days, but I love my new bike!
Bell’s is a wonderful shop for anyone, but I’d especially recommend the shop to anyone who might be nervous about buying their first big kid bike.

Great bike shop I go here anytime I have any issues with my bike and they fix it in a very timely matter. Also, great prices and very knowledgeable workers. If you need a place to get your bike fixed than this is the place to go.

I came in asking to get my pedal put back on as it kept falling off. The guy there put the pedal pack on and found a nut that fit well enough for it to stop coming off!
After around 15 minutes of him searching for the right nut, he found it, and I asked him how much I owed and he shrugged and said $ 5 was fine. I think he could have asked for more since we hadn’t established a price, but $ 5 was definitely fair.

Bell’s is top-​notch. Steve and company are serious about finding you a righteous friggen bike at the right friggen price.
I had a strict budget for a new road bike, so I was hesitant when he suggested I get on the fitting machine. I have some close buddies who’ve done business with Steve before, though, and he came highly recommended. I ended up doing the fit, and a few days later received an email with a few size recommendations for different brands, along with a few options he had in his shop. His prices (and bikes) were friggen awesome, and I walked away with a sweet bike that fits perfectly – all within my budget.

Not a place I would goto to buy a new bike or find a good salesman. I called before to find out when this place closes then went on over on a monday after 5pm. You wouldn’t even know the place was open because it’s giant garage door with a side door and the window is covered. So i walked in. Told them I was in the market for a bike. And they said they were too busy to help me, come back another day. Annoyed by their response I asked them if there was any other bike shops in the area. It wasn’t until then and told them i was looking to spend a grand that they starting asked more questions… All of sudden maybe a sparked tripped in their head to say, «omg we need to get this sales.»
I felt judged as a newbie, and nonetheless it shouldn’t of mattered. They did eventually direct me to another bike shop which was about the nicest thing they’ve done.
Note this place is not a good place to buy your first bicycle. I’ll pass for good customer service any day.
