History

Established in 2008.

Fringe spawned from Ruth Daneman Salon, which opened back in 1990 in the same space. After 25 years of being in the biz, Ruth decided to move back to her homeland of England. Ruth passed the torch to Erin and three years later, Fringe Salon was born! Our salon continues to be the bohemian edge of Passyunk Ave but this time we spruced it up with more stylists, a new color line and products, and rotating local art for sale. Look ‘n’ listen for the disco scissors that bling on East Passyunk!

Erin has had a wonderful life thus far in her 31 years on the planet and Fringe Salon is a dream come true in many ways. Running the salon incorporates Erin’s beliefs and passions. She infuses the community with those feelings, making it a special place to come to on East Passyunk Ave. Her rich professional background in the fields of music and fine art is what inspires Erin and forges Fringe Salon as an outlet for creativity. This in turn allows a space for the like-​minded stylists to express themselves.

I went to Fringe on a whim while my regular hair stylist was on pregnancy leave. I was matched with Shelly who works Weds, Thurs and I think Sat. She’s personable, fun, and gives a great edgy haircut. I can’t say more — if you are going to fringe, ask for Shelly. She is great.

I’ve had my hair cut here a few times now on a friend’s recommendation. I’ve been really pleased with the result and the price is right (I usually pay $ 45 or so for a cut). I don’t get my hair dyed here so I can’t speak to that. My stylist Shelly is a great listener and has done a fantastic job turning my hair dream into reality. It doesn’t hurt that she did the hair of the stylist there whose haircut I wanted! I’m happy with the service and talent here, and it’s affordable, so I’ll continue to come here.

Found this place via Unilocal after googling what salons use olaplex and wella color. I am new to Philly and had no idea where to go. Erin was my stylist, and she’s the nicest most real person! She’s an amazing Philadelphian. I showed her a picture, gave her my previous color formula and just like that she created magic! Hair color turned out perfect!

This place is completely amazing. I’ve been bringing my mixed race children here for 7 years and I can’t stop coming back. Initially this was going to be a one and done place. Now I can’t imagine going anywhere else. Erin is an amazing stylist and is so great with my children. Rita is the salon manager and she is awesome. Everyone here is so kind, bright and the energy is so positive and bright. And they have a kitty! Aaaaaah!

As someone who works in the beauty biz, Fringe should give itself a hearty pat on the back. I’ve had probably close to 10 hair stylists do my hair in my short adult life, and I can honestly say I’ve probably never had a horrible hair cut. I’ve just never been impressed enough to return. Perhaps I’m a misguided millennial, always craving more than I deserve, but in general I just think I’ve not met a good match for my tastes!
I work on Passyunk Ave and on a whim, decided it was time to do a summer «chop» as well as get my long neglected roots taken care of. A quick call and they were able to squeeze me in, same day, for a hair cut, and a week later for color service. I’ve since returned several times for a trim and continued color services with my friendly and talented stylist Shelly. The salon is clean and organized, and is often decorated with art from local artists. Shelly does an awesome job bleaching and toning my hair to a beautiful rose-​gold undertone blonde. I get so many kudos from my hairstylist friends over the color. The pricing is extremely reasonable for the quality of services that are being provided.
I highly recommend Shelly and her fellow co-​workers at Fringe for any hair services you might need on the Avenue!

Went to Fringe after a referral from a coworker and reading lots of great reviews on here. I called yesterday and saw Roberta for a color and cut this morning. Everyone is super nice, prices are reasonable, and I even scheduled a follow up for color in eight weeks, which I never do! I may have finally found my hair place in Philly.

Just came home from my second haircut with Erin, and man oh man, can she ever cut hair. Holy talent. This is probably one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had. Like, EVER. (And I’m talking far and above some of the «best salons» in New York, Chicago and Toronto).
And just to give some background on my hair, I have incredibly thick, coarse, and curly hair with a sort of «top coat”/“bottom coat» thing going on (yah, totally weird) and I pretty much ask stylists to get rid of the whole frizzy ugly top layer of my hair through extreme texturizing to expose the lovely healthy curls underneath. It’s kind of progressive and uses a lot of special cutting techniques, therefore when I find someone as good as Erin, I feel like I’ve won the hair lotto.
Oh and Rita the receptionist is a total doll and prices are beyond reasonable. Also I’ve seen some amazing cuts and color from the other women that work there, so I don’t think you can go wrong at Fringe. First salon I’ve tried since moving to Philly… how lucky am I??? Thank you Erin!!! Hair Goddess!!!

Fringe Salon is absolutely amazing! I recently had my hair cut (from super long to super short) by Roberta, and she is incredible. For years, I hated going to hair salons because I was never content with the result – mainly due to going to salons who didn’t care about what I wanted, just cared about getting paid. Fringe Salon is different. I probably visit a hair salon every 2 – 3 years (bad, I know.), but I think I’ll be visiting Fringe a lot more often! Roberta listened to what I wanted, gave me helpful advice regarding my mostly-​frizzy-​but-​wavy hair – and most importantly, executed a perfect, beautiful, modern bob. I’ve had short hair before, but I hated it, so I was very nervous about going short again. I had to cut it though, because my hair was extremely damaged from styling tools, and years of avoiding a salon. Roberta eased my apprehension about hair salons with her skills, and I thank her very much for that. I wasn’t able to convey my gratitude very well, so I hope she reads this review. Thank you so much, Roberta! Also, Uli, their cat, is so adorable. She looks just like my cat :)

The best place I’ve been to get my hair done. Erin is a rockstar and knows exactly what I want, even when I don’t know. I went for a color correction and she transformed my brassy, stripy hair into a natural, cool toned blonde without compromising the integrity of my hair. She also gave me the best cut and is fun to chat with in the chair. I’d totally recommend this salon to everyone.

I went to Fringe for a hair cut 5+ years ago when I first moved to philly and it was awesome, but then I moved to Chinatown and it was just too far away. So when I moved back to south philly I decided to give it another shot. so happy I did! Shelly cut my hair and she was awesome, one of the only stylists I’ve ever gone to that I actually enjoyed talking to (I’m kind of an introvert). I have thick curly hair that I like to keep pretty short and I am also in the process of growing out straight-​across bangs and she was so understanding of exactly what I wanted. it looked perfect when she finished cutting it. She also didn’t flat iron my hair like almost all stylists do when they cut it, which I hate. I’ll definitely keep going back to her. I don’t plan on leaving south philly anytime soon :)

I can’t rave about Erin and her amazing team of stylists enough. Erin cuts my entire families hair, which is not easy given that my daughter is two and my husband has some crazy cowlicks to contend with. The cuts grow out so well and are easy to maintain. They care about our local community and are so supportive to our schools and arts programs. I’ve spent tons of money over the years in cities up and down the East Coast and Fringe is by far my favorite hair salon. The work is top notch, the products are top shelf and the cost is affordable. What more can you ask for?

If you want high quality, professional hair styling then come here immediately! Erin is a true pro at her coloring and cutting techniques so you can trust her to do an amazing job. They’re not unaffordable so there’s no reason to feel guilty about getting such quality work! Go go go!

3.5 stars: Came twice for a haircut and once for coloring. Im pretty picky about who cuts my hair due to past poor experiences. My first haircut turned out really well, and I liked that that there was a lot of volume/​texture. The coloring, however, did not last very long. I chose a reddish/​purple color; and after about a month, it faded. The second haircut was nothing like the first… I was quite disappointed… it was a bit odd and it wasn’t what I was expecting (asymmetrical bob)…I haven’t returned to the salon since… now that my hair is growing back in, the front is so much longer than the back…:l

I have weird half wavy, sorta straight (in the front) hair. I always have a hard time finding someone that understands how to cut it so
A) it works with the curl (when I want it curly)
B)Still looks good straight.
Fate led me to Erin at Fringe and she can do all of these things. She assessed my hair, and then with some bizarrely vague guidance from me, sculpted my hair into an awesome angled bob with bangs.
She really took her time, and did half of the cut when the hair was wet, then blowdried it and finished the cut. No more triangular pyramid hair for me! Stoked.
I’m even going back for color. I’ve told all of my friend to go to her– a really great experience.

Love the cut, the cat, and the conversation. My hair looks enormously healthier and voluminous after under just an hour in the hands of Erin. I was unsure of how short I wanted to go at the change in season. She gave me the perfect length that allowed me to still pull it back. She also gave me tips for future hair dying and was very personable.

I have now been going to Fringe for over a year and could not be happier. I have seen three stylists there, but I am now getting my hair done by Roberta, and she does an AMAZING job!
I cannot recommend Roberta enough — she listens to my vague ideas of what I want, takes my hair care regimen (none) into consideration, and gives me a fabulous cut every time. She has also done multi-​step, multi-​layered color for me and it looks AWESOME and holds up super-​well.
The salon is clean and pleasant, everyone who works there is really nice and knowledgeable, and it’s a good experience from start to finish. Go get your hair done there! You won’t regret it.

Ahhh! This is definitely my new & only spot for all things hair related from here on out. I’ll admit it, I gave up on my hair about 6 years ago and just let it grow. It’s not as cute as it sounds. Think dreads, think frizz, think split ends and at home dye jobs.
I’m embarrassed I even let it go for this long, but as more time passed, the more afraid I was to walk into a salon and be judged for my total lack of respect for hair that was now growing past my hips.
This is where Ariel comes in. She is fantastic. I felt instantly comfortable with her and she was hella cool about the fact that I couldn’t even be bothered to brush my hair before my appointment. I showed her a few pictures of what I was hoping for, and she went above and beyond my expectations. The whole appointment was really easy and I walked out feeling like a whole new person. She didn’t try to force me to go shorter than I wanted & really really made my hair look amazing, despite the fact that I’m not ready to have alllll the dead ends cut off yet. Baby steps.
She also showed me how to style my new bangs and curled my hair for me. I felt like I was walking on clouds after I left! Getting a cut there is worth every penny! I highly recommend this spot. Everyone there is really nice, had me laughing the whole time and I even got to kick it with the shop kitty before I left.
