H&R Block

I agree with others who say they would leave zero stars, if possible. Run away from this location and any other location for HR Block. If you have ANY complexity in your taxes, they are completely unable to comprehend and accurately file your taxes. I had a rental property sale that qualified for a gain exclusion, and the person who did my taxes claimed that there was no way for me to qualify. He pressured me to just file the taxes (while I was in a state of shock from what he said I owed), and claimed it was «easy» to just amend it later. That turned out not to be true. I did the IRS research and presented the facts back to them, and HR Block filed the amendment for me. They even thanked me for giving them the info and said they would add it to their training… really?! Fast forward several months later, and I am still dealing with this issue with the IRS. I have spent countless hours on this from frantically mailing my amendments on the tax due dates (as you cannot file electronically) to hounding HR Block for a refund on a ridiculous amount that I paid them for this mess. I even paid a professional Tax accountant to audit their returns and have been going back with the IRS for weeks. It has been a huge regret and headache for me. If I can prevent just one person from going through the same thing, I consider it a victory. The total lack of quality, experience, and professionalism was astounding to me.

Wow, this is definitely the worst H&R Block I’ve ever been to. Horrible service.
Made an appointment over the phone. When I went in, the woman told me my taxes were too «complicated.» Yes, I moved from NY to Philly but are two states in the tri-​state area that difficult to figure out? Especially when your JOB is to do taxes. Super unimpressed!
She then told me to schedule an appointment with a different tax specialist for the following week. I came in on time for my appointment and had to wait 30 minutes!!!
This is one of the worst and most unprofessional businesses I’ve been to in recent memory. I would never return.

I got a call from this location earlier this year, offering a 50% discount off my tax return. They charged me a lot for taxes last year so I would not have considered using them this year without the discount.
When I showed up at this location, however, they would not give me the discount. Claimed it is only for new customers, although the voicemail failed to say that. I even played the voicemail for them, and a person who worked there said it was «irresponsible» for them to provide me with that offer since I was not a new customer. I called their headquarters and they wouldn’t do anything for me. Utter lack of customer service or common sense. Bottom line: avoid H&R block.

I used to go to their location in Vorhees and never had an issue, but this location is terrible. I basically wasted time and money and got absolutely nothing out of it aside from an hour and 15 minute wait.
I made an appointment with Janine for 6pm. Rushed out of work, cabbed it so I could make it to the appointment on time, only to be told Janine called out. Why did nobody call me to let me know so I could avoid the trip? No idea. I asked if there was anyone else available (although you’d think THEY’d try and scramble to find someone since my lady called out, but no…) apparently only one woman was available to take me but she had just taken a client. I asked how long she’d be, I was told only a few minutes.
I waited over an hour. During that time I saw multiple employees walking around, chatting, playing on their phones. I asked if anyone else could help me with my return, I was told I had to wait for that particular person.
After a while I gave up, went back to the front desk, was told once again it’d be a few more minutes, and left.
Terrible service, completely unprofessional, I will never take my business here ever again. What a complete waste of my time!

I wouldn’t leave a star if I could. I went in for an estimate today and the gentleman who helped was so rude, and didn’t know what he was doing. I gave him all the information he needed; asked what my total would be he said he didn’t know; I asked for an estimated refund amount he gave me a number that was so much lower than what their website stated. For every question I had there was no straight forward answer. A woman in the next cubicle was yelling at someone over the phone telling them she can’t help them if they didn’t know the name of the person who helped them on their taxes. It was a very uncomfortable environment.

I made an appointment online with a specific tax advisor that had experience with rental properties. I confirmed the appointment by phone the day before. I arrived for my appointment on time and checked in at the front desk. The clerk at the desk said that she would «tell him» I was there. I then sat in the waiting room for 25 minutes before a young woman came back to get me. She asked me several questions and then said that we would have to do a «drop off» tax preparation because my return was complicated and she needed time to work on it alone. Maybe that was because there were only 20 minutes left in my appointment slot by the time she called me back. Or maybe it was because she was not the older gentleman with many years of experience in difficult returns that I had made my appointment with. Oh, he had left earlier that day, which no one bothered to tell me while I was sitting in the waiting room for 25 minutes. She quoted me at $ 400 to do a 1040 + Schedule A + Schedule E. I paid significantly less at a small private tax office for the same return last year. Unfortunately, I waited too long to get an appointment there this year.
If you don’t mind wasting lots of time in the waiting room, overpaying and not being informed of pertinent information, would you mind if the office staff makes fun of you behind your back as you turn to leave? I’m not sure if they did it to me because I don’t have eyes in the back of my head, but I saw them do it to others during my 25 minutes in the waiting room. I also noticed they had an awful lot to spend time gossiping about during a the busiest tax prep week of the year. Very unprofessional.
Check out Ambrozy Accounting around the corner. Professional, reasonably priced, on time, willing to spend time with you. I’m filing an extension and making an appointment with Ambrozy in May.

Ive done taxes w these people for almost 3 years and it’s always a pain .
They charge big numbers and always mess up on taxes so you’re forced to go back and have thing re-​done. Always a hassle .
For business owners I say go to a private tax place rather than these people.
They don’t seem to be educated in much
Guess it’s just a crash corse they take to have a certificate .
The prices are up there to, 400 $ isn’t exactly affordable for a small business .
All in all just skip em.

I love going to the H&R Block at 15^th and Chestnut. I find that the people are very pleasant and helpful there. I’ve never had a problem and I’ve been a client for five years now! You pay for the service and it is well worth it. I like talking to a tax professional face to face and have my tax situation explained to me. Also, I’m paying someone to be accountable — if there’s a mistake, then it’s not my mistake. Fortunately, there hasn’t been a mistake made yet :)

Agree with the one other review that is posted here. And that goes double time for the office on 9^th & Market. I had a poor experience at 15 & Chestnut last year (the woman was majorly confused by me living in TWO, yeah TWO, states in the course of one year… had me paying in $ 300 and when I questioned it, she managed to work me a $ 100 refund… but I had to question first) so I did a little research and found a woman at the 9^th & Market office that listed her «specialty» as rental properties, which I happen to be a new landlord this year so that sounded good to me. She typed my information in the wrong box no less than seven times, read the questions on screen like it was the first time she ever saw them, and asked ME how much I paid in interest, commission, etc rather than looking at the nice neat stack of documents that I presented to her. Also, I had a 4pm appointment. She called me to sit down at 4pm, then said «Oh geez, I have someone in front of you, it will just be a minute.» Half an hour later (after over hearing someone book exotic dancers via cell phone while having their taxes done), I finally get to sit at her desk and she says «Oh just one minute, I need to return this phone call.» Are you kidding me!!! I was literally twitching. No one should have to pay $ 200 to watch someone type numbers in the system. When all was said & done I just wanted to pay and get the hell out of here and the poor girl at the front desk had to ask my preparer TWICE to close my return so that she could check me out and I could leave. I think my skull was steaming. Seriously, I have no experience preparing my taxes, but I would do them myself before going back here. Find somewhere, anywhere else to go. Just don’t pay your taxes, it can’t be worse than going in here. This office is Philadelphia by the books. Miserable, ghetto, and makes you want to jump into traffic.
(I would like to add that the whole reason I used H&R Block is because I had wonderful experiences at the Governor’s Square office in Bear, DE… so there is hope for the company, just NOT Philly locations

H&R Block is a complete waste of time and money. Do not enter this store for any reason other than if you need to fart and do not want to do so on the street. Trust me, they won’t be able to smell your fart as it smells like sweaty armpits in there. You can do your taxes quicker, more conveniently, and cheaper online than these jerkasses can.
Imagine if the workforce from the worst McDonald’s did your taxes. That is what this H&R Block is like. I don’t mind being poorly treated when it comes to getting a cup of coffee or getting a poor product when it comes to a chicken sandwich but when it comes to documents that could either cost you further money down the road or even jail time, I would suggest that they treat the issue with greater gravity than the above mentioned products. Sadly, they don’t. In fact, I have never been treated so poorly by any business. This is not hyperbole.
Long story short, the person who did my taxes lied to me and never completed them. When I came back to the office to see what the condition of my return was, I was lied to and ignored for a good part of 2.5 hours. Finally, after they realized that this accountant wasn’t going to be in when promised and was lying to them as well, they helped but not before blaming me for trusting them to do their job. In the end, they really did such a poor job. For a tax place that charges $ 300 for filing a federal and two state return, you would think that they would be able to mail the return for you.
For this place, they do NOT tell you up front what their fees are going to be. That right there is a big no-​no sign but I did not think to ask. When I witnessed someone else asking, they told them that they would not know until after the job is done. That seems shady at best but most likely illegal. Mix into the fact that they have predatory lending techniques and take advantage of the poor, this is a scummy company that has little to no reason for existing.
So, please. Just do your taxes online. Even if you are intimidated by the process, the questioned asked online are more detailed and helpful than the people who work at H&R Block.
