History

Established in 1919.

The business was started in 1919 by Isaac Goldberg selling basic dry goods as a peddler. He eventually opened a store in Olde City. The first significant location was 429 Market Street in downtown Philadelphia. It remained in operation until 1968, when it was forced to close due to commercial development on the block and the new flagship location opened at 902 Chestnut Street. In 2002 the store was again forced to close due to the construction of a parking garage.

The store remained closed for seven months until the current 13th and Chestnut Street location was reopened in November of 2002.

The variety of merchandise has changed with the times and the interests of our customers. We are fortunate to have loyal customers and many have shopped at all three of our locations. They have raised their children and grandchildren to be I. Goldberg shoppers and for that we are very grateful.

Meet the Business Owner

Nana G.

Business Owner

I. Goldberg Army & Navy has had a retail store in Center City Philadelphia since 1919. We have been serving generations of customers from all walks of life.

The business was founded by my grandfather, Isaac, a Russian immigrant.

My father, Charles, added fashion and more departments to the store until we have the unique mix of merchandise you see today. We have something for everybody and I invite you to «come on down to I. Goldberg» and explore our store.
