My hair has been seen by plenty of hairdressers.
Many good. Some very bad.
Julius Scissor is good. Very good.
I came in as a groupon customer– abs after seeing positive reviews I felt confident that my hair would be in good hands.
And I was correct!
Waking in you might be uneasy. There is a sense of chaotic whimsy. This is not a typical Rittenhouse salon. It is not flashy. It is instead beautifully eccentric. It is not sterile. Instead it is real.
I showed Julius my pics of what I wanted and I got better than what I had hoped for.
Come in, build a rapport, get one of the best haircuts of your life. And sometimes there’s donuts. So that’s a bonus.

I love my haircut so far. It’s very flattering and I think it makes me look younger. I haven’t wash my hair, so i don’t know how it will behave without styling.

Julius cut my hair and gave me highlights today, and my hair looks amazing! I am very picky about hairdressers and as a result rarely go, but Julius did such a wonderful job! Really great experience, very nice guy, interesting conversation! Love this place!!!

Julius is an pure avant-​garde artist!! Love him! He collected various lands of objects and then made them into his own art works. I think he’s inspired by Dali and Andy Warhol. Fantastic Studio!

YES!!! I made today a day of getting myself together which involved getting a new hairdo. I needed a hair stylist who was brave enough and creative enough to help me with a new do. I had no style in mind but Julius worked with me and in no time had my hair in shape and looking as lively as me. Good bye, boring hair! I’m sticking with the artist… Julius Scissor!

I just visited this salon yesterday. Julius did a great job with my hair; he spent a lot of time & the cut was great. The only drawback is that I am very tired after a long day’s work and he has a lot of energy. So the experience was a little exhausting for me; also I am very introverted. But he is nice 7 friendly, does a wonderful job, really listened to what I was saying & gave me options for my next cut. I booked my next appt. before I left.

I usually don’t like to write negative reviews, but I thought I had to warn people on that one.
— Salon does not look very clean, there are hair (from others) on the table, floras, etc…
— They are nice, but the «highlights“I received consisted of semi permanent color — which I never agreed to but was told of once the haircut was over…
— Haircut is possibility the WORST haircut I have received in my entire life. I told them I hated it, and I was told I just had to «live with it» and that I would love it. It was NOT what I asked for, and they refused to fix it… Supposedly there was not enough time left to make any changes…
So I waited 1 day to see… well, I STILL hate it, and now I will have to pay to go to another salon to fix what they did…
Book an appointment at your own risks… You might just leave with a botched haircut…

This is my first review I’ve ever written but after the horrible customer service I received at Julius I felt that people should be warned.
I bought a groupon for $ 17 for mani and pedi. I called Julius to book an appointment but they said their nail spa is separate from the hair salon and gave me another number to call. The lady I called on the separate number was not only not willing to accommodate me and give me an appointment but was shockingly rude. She seemed so annoyed that I even called and apparently was booked for two weeks and the coming weekend some conference was taking place so they had to close (that made no sense). Also just initially getting in touch with her took about 4 days. This is actually ridiculous, I called today one last time and of course they aren’t taking anymore appointments. She didn’t bother to tell me other available days and hung up on my face (second time she did this). Most unprofessional business Ive come across. I’m retuning the groupon and will be asking my friends who bought this groupon to do the same.

I’m going to start by saying I don’t write a review unless the place is awesome or terrible. This place was amazing! The place is definitely not your conventional hair salon, there is art everywhere (all by Julius himself) and from the outside it isn’t (in my opinion) clear if it is a hair salon, barber, or art studio. I bought a groupon for haircut and deep conditioning. Julius cut my hair and did the conditioning. Overall, I was VERY happy with the result. Great cut, great experience. I would 100% go back, with or without the groupon.

Julius scissor is an artist. He has a wonderful aesthetic sensibility that translates into cuts that fit heads, faces, and personalities. I recommend him unequivocally.

I have been seeing Julius for at least the past 15 years and my mother for over 30. It is his tireless devotion to his customer, his passion for his job, and his positive demeanor and friendly attitude that have kept me coming back all these years. I’ve had basically everything done to my hair, from dying my hair and eyebrows blue and neon green to any number of cuts. Julius is able to bring to life a great haircut from just a few vague sentences or a small picture. Any time I’ve been less than pleased with my cut Julius has been more than willing to adjust it as necessary. If you’re looking for the best cut of your life and the most fun you’ll have while getting you’re haircut Julius is the man to see.

Julius is just the right amount of funny, and definitely one of the most outwardly creative people in the city.
I’d probably buy him lunch (once) just to hang out, but instead each year I’ve come here when I’m back in town, and it’s like story time, improv theatre, and life coaching all for the price of one damn stylish cut.
Overal, visiting Julius Scissor is a genuine cultural experience. His clientele would self-​select, but I think many bad reviews are from groupon people who purchased ahead, but weren’t good cultural matches. Definitely walk by the storefront, or look at its photos before going.
Its probably for you if you like the art.

I was really surprised to see so many negative reviews on here. I had a great experience here on all fronts:
The décor– quirky, bright, and inviting, with pictures of happy customers and Julius’ art made with hair clippings hanging on the walls. He does do your hair in the front window, but it’s not like the place is in front of Rittenhouse with tons of walk-​by traffic. I saw maybe ten people walk by on the week day I was there. And there’s so much stuff posted in/​near the window it’s not like you’re on full display like an animal at the zoo, like some of the reviews made it sound.
Julius himself was very sweet. He clearly loves what he does and explained what he was doing the whole time (and was very patient with his apprentice as well). He made conversation that extended beyond small talk. Not only that, but I was there with an elderly woman I help take care of who was getting her hair done for her birthday that weekend, which she invited him to. I’m sure he has places he’d rather be than an 80 year old (this was my first time there, but she’s been there before… still it’s not like they’re great friends or anything), but he showed up! Despite not knowing anyone, he was the life of the party and I thought it spoke volumes about how he values his customers.
And the haircut itself was beautiful. I hate my hair. It is thick and frizzy and despite always wanting something bordering on a flapper-​esque bob, I’ve stopped asking for it when I get my hair cut because the stylist never gets it right. So, I didn’t even ask for a bob or bangs specifically. I let him decide after he asked me questions about my lifestyle, activities I do, etc. and really nailed it. Even two months later it’s really grown out beautifully.
It’s not your quick $ 20 trim at Supercuts, obviously, but it’s a great place with great service, and that’s hard to find in Center City for under $ 100.

I had been wanting to try Julius for years, and when I saw a Groupon, I jumped.
Immediately upon walking in I knew I was in for a treat. Anyone walking by the place has certainly noticed the sculptures in the window, and that eclectic, artsy theme continued throughout. Although I had almost no idea what I wanted in a haircut, Julius and his assistant (?) Shay spent some time getting to know me, asking questions and looking at photos.
Once the cut started, Julius was fast and furious. He was pushing my head this way and that, snipping and measuring in a way more reminiscent of an artist than a hairdresser. All the while we are chatting about neutrinos and genetic engineering (I am a scientist). Halfway through, Julius abruptly announced that he needed a break and turned up the music — an African-​sounding drumbeat that had been in the background. He pulls out this large, hot orange whistle and plays it along with the music. Needless to say, this was turning into a very interesting experience. Next, he asked if I wanted to get up and dance with him and Shay while he played the whistle. I figured «what the hell?» and we all danced around for a few minutes.
After that — back in the chair, some more lightning speed style cutting and voila — I have an amazing, flattering, very different cut. I absolutely loved it, and 2 weeks later still do. Not only that, but I had a great time while I was there, something I certainly canNOT say about most salons.
Finally, I just want to mention that during this whole time, I didn’t realize that Julius was cash only. So, when payment time came, I didn’t have the cash I needed to buy a product or tip. I felt horrible, as you can imagine, but Julius said no problem — just come back later and pay. In my opinion, this says a lot about him as a person. Generally speaking, only trustworthy people are willing to trust others.

I have finally found the perfect haircut!!! I was so sick of getting cuts WHERE THEY TAKE TOO MUCH OFF!!! argh. I explained this to Shay, the stylist at Julius Scissor, and he got all my dead ends off, and gave me the layers i wanted, but did not, i repeat, DID NOT take too much off. perfect!!!He really knows what makes it to a pony (which i have to wear for work/fitness)and what doesn’t.
Something happened to me during the cut. I poured out my heart and revealed everything about me, haha. Shay never got flustered or batted an eye, he listened! Whether it was about quantum physics or lesbianism and feminism, it didn’t matter. i felt comfortable, and i enjoyed it, haha.
PLUS, did i ever get a great cut!!! I am NEVER going to another hair dresser!

I debated how negative I wanted to be with this review because (a) I don’t feel TOO badly about my haircut (the beautiful thing about my hair is that it always grows out to look more or less the same as usual without the need for drastic intervention, so I can always shrug off a bad cut), and (b) I know that Julius reads these reviews and it always hurts to read negativity about yourself and your business online, but ultimately the thought that I would be PISSED if I had paid full price for one of these cuts resulted in my decision to rate Julius Scissor 2 stars.
Basically, the main reason why I don’t feel like this business deserves at least three stars is because of the extreme social discomfort that I experienced at my appointment. Both Julius and Shay started off very friendly and kind, but unfortunately, in my opinion, during my haircut (which felt like the longest haircut ever) Shay became uncomfortably friendly. After I had said no more than three sentences to him, he said «I can tell you’re a very interesting person,» over, and over, and over — at least 15 times in the course of my hour-​long hair cut. He also awkwardly tried to compliment my haircut by repeatedly asking (jokingly) if I was sure that I wanted to stay with my significant other. Now, I get that some hairstylists like to talk to you, but the awkward fake-​flirting just made me really uncomfortable. He laid it on so thick that I just wanted to get out of there instead of expressing dissatisfaction with my haircut, which would have prolonged an already painful experience.
I’m sorry to say that the cut itself was only marginally better than the last time I had my hair cut in Chinatown, in that sketchy $ 10 place on Race Street. It sadly wasn’t even as good as my hometown hair salon, where I can get a wash and cut for $ 13 + tip. I can’t imagine how mad I would have been if I had paid full price.
Julius, I know you read these reviews and I apologize for the negativity, but that’s my honest opinion.

I got a fabulous deal thru buywithme so i called b/​f buying it. I spoke directly to Julius. I asked him what his hair philospohy was & he said I cut a woman’s hair according to what she wants & her lifestyle. I was sold right there. I made a saturday appt. which was convient due to my 9 – 5 work schedule. The salon is funky in a good way. Julius’ art work is displayed & alot of it is made out of hair-it’s great & appropriate décor. I told Julius what I wanted which was a major change, I went from hair 5 inches past my shoulders that was layered to a short runway bob with tons of personality a little longer in the front & slightly shorter in the back. He took his time cutting my hair which was a 1^st ever for me, he even dried the front of my hair b/​f cutting it. Then made sure it was just perfect b/​f putting the scissors down. My boyfriend was with me & watched ever step of the transformation. (he was fascinated by the technique) I left the salon a new woman. My hair looked so much healthier & up to date. I kept looking in store fronts at my new hair as we walked in the city to get food afterwards. Julius is an ARTIST in more than one sense. I just make my next hair appt. with him for next Sat. can’t wait. I more than recommend him & his salon. My boyfriend says this is best cut ever that I found a gem. I agree
P. S.- How funny is this major nutter goes to see Juius every ten days to get his gotee trimmed, Julius suggested he go with a close to the face gotee b/​c it looks more soft & friendly. Mayor Nutter & Juilus were nice enough to give me their autographs for my 9 year old son.

I Heart Julius!
I used to go to NYC for my haircuts, but since I have found Julius, I completely surrender my fringes to his disposal.
First of all, always a pleasure to sit on the chair and listen to Julius (and his newest lovely assistant) talking about love, life, and art, while watching him snip off strands of my hair. In half an hour, Viola!, I am reincarnated with a foxy haircut and ready to conquer the world again.
I am one of those people who never knows what to do with her hair. I work long hard hours in front of th computer so I usually have my thick long asian hair up in a ponytail.
Julius knows this (he KNOWS all his clients!) and every time I pay him a visit, he manages to ‘bring the sexy back’ and still allows me live my low maintenance haircare habits.
Every woman deserves a little touch of Julius at least once. Really.

i bought the BuyWithMe and my bf used it: «As entertaining on the inside as it appears on the outside – once inside, you’re surrounded by the owner’s personal sculptures and will be listening to jazz the entire time. The hair dressers on scene when I visited consisted of Julius Scissor (who officially changed his name – which would limit any future job placement to (1) cutlery salesman, (2) surgeon or (3) rabbi) and his trusty side-​kick Shay. Julius has been at this location for three decades now, so despite the hip, artsy appearance, this is no fly-​by-​night operation. Thanks to a BuyWithMe discount, my haircut was with the very interesting and pleasant Shay. To be brutally honest, the cut was average, but I’d go a long way for such friendly people. In all fairness, I have a rather tricky head of hair to deal with. Overall, I left with a nice haircut, a big grin, and all for a very reasonable price.»

Julius is great. As a seasoned sculptor, you can understand his transition into hair. He has been at the same location for 30 years and the shop has that vintage feel. Many of Juilius’ sculptures are on display to look at, and his station is very colorful. I felt well attended to-​never being there before. The shampoo man was very nice and sweet, and gave a great scalp massage.
I bought the kgb deal online, as it was my birthday, and typically I don’t bother getting my hair done. I just wanted a trim, but I let Julius use his creative license to create a masterpiece. I have curly hair, and sometimes it is difficult for hair stylists to understand. Julius had a great understanding of my type of hair. He cut my hair both dry first and then wet to even it out. He did put a few layers in the front that I wasn’t expecting, but I didn’t mind too much. He also brushed my hair with a finer comb than I usually use which pulled a bit, but I have a high tolerance for pain.
Overall Julius seems to be a really talented guy. His shop is totally different than most would except, and being an artist I really appreciated it. Overall I had a great experience and even found parking thanks to Julius’ direction. After I was finished he even gave my some of his shine product as a gift, thanks Julius!
I do plan to go back in the future, my only warning is to remember that Julius is a sculptor, if you are looking for a high-​end salon-​with a perfectionist hair designer, this may not be the place for you. However, if you are open minded and want something that is different and artistic, you will love this place!
