Laurentius Purnama has an extensive celebrity client list that includes Brittney Spears, Ivana Trump, Joan Collins, and Thalia among others. He has served as Lead Stylist for the Alvin Valley Collection during New York Fashion Week, and as stylist for countless editorial features, advertising layouts and cover shots in international and national fashion magazines. Laurentius has been featured in Philadelphia Magazine, Allure, and in numerous Philadelphia newspapers and other on-​line publications. His status as an internationally recognized Celebrity Stylist is unique in the Philadelphia salon industry. I’ve been going to Sherry L. since 2007. First at other salons in Philadelphia, now at Laurentius. I started seeing Sherry for her incredible eyebrow shaping skills and over the years I realized her talents extended way beyond that. Her skills have shaped my hair into short pixie cuts, to in between lengths, and to above shoulder lobs. And although it’s not my style, the eyelashes she applies are really quite impressive. Every time I walk out feeling like a star and often to compliments. In short, she is amazing and I now travel far to continue to benefit from her skills. I would (and have) recommended her to anyone — and although I should probably keep my mouth shut to ensure I get appointments — it’s not right to keep her to myself. teehee
I could stop my review here, but I think it’s worth mentioning about Laurentius and the rest of the salon. What the Laurentius salon space lacks in physical space (which doesn’t inhibit function and is a beautiful space) is filled with the energy and talent of all who work there — Sherry, Ed, Kim, Robin, Erica, to name a few. Laurentius is gracious, witty, and straightforward — I appreciate that. From the moment you enter you are greeted by name and offered refreshment — like you belong. And Sherry is often telling me about various new classes she’s taken or techniques she’s learned from others there that Laurentius supported. Many salon owners just worry about the bottom line in their salon, and not all of them realize, like Laurentius has, that to invest in the talent is to also truly invest in the success of their business and the next generation.
So don’t go visit this salon (or Sherry) because I or anyone else said so or because it’s a Best of Philly, but visit because Laurentius invests in his people and because it shows when you walk out with your fabulous hairstyle.

After having just moved to philly, I needed a haircut and chose this salon for its good reviews and convenient location. However after my experience there I would really not recommend it to others. my appointment was with a junior stylist, and upon meeting the stylist I was not consulted about what I wanted from the haircut or anything about my hair. She didn’t seem to be concerned with what I was hoping to get from the appointment, which is something that you would hope for on a first visit to a new salon. She didn’t understand when I expressed to her that my hair style felt heavy in my layers and around my face… And I came out with a $ 60 haircut that I felt was really just a wash and blowout. Upon visiting another salon yesterday, without mentioning any of this, I was informed that my hair was extremely uneven, so I can definitely say that the haircut was not done well. For these reasons I would warn others away.

My favorite salon, hands down ! If I could go here everyday– I would ! Laurentius is a hair magician. He honestly gives me a perfect haircut every time. I tried other salons in the city, nothing compares to Laurentius. The salon is beautiful with all this natural light coming into the place. They also have fabulous cookies from Isgro’s bakery, too. I’ve heard all the hair stylists are fabulous. Laurentius hair salon is PERFECT!!!

I had an amazing experience at the salon. It was my first time there and Sherry was recommended by a friend. The salon was very modern and clean. The atmosphere was inviting and fun. Sherry did an excellent job on my hair and worked with me to find out exactly what I wanted to do and what I was looking for. She walked me through each step letting me know her thoughts and opinions. I would highly recommend this salon to anyone in town!

An extremely extravagant friend treated my hair to a cut from the salon’s namesake. Laurentius is a gracious a human as is imaginable, the arc of his career is utterly fascinating and his affection for his wee one is enthralling. I could have lingered in his chair for days listening to his stories.
More importantly, I was impressed with Laurentius’ analytical approach to hair-​cutting and the precision of his cut. The cut was so architecturally sound that it held its shape for more than four months. I would award 4.5 stars if I could. I, however, cannot award five stars because the cut was quite pricy for this neighborhood. I will definitely consider a return visit for a special occasion.

While my loyalties for hair remain elsewhere, the staff at Laurentius Salon seem to be some of the best in the business. I understand that the owner, Laurentius himself, is a favorite of the likes of Britney Spears and magazine editorial staffs. With a background like that, I suspect he’s pretty capable at all aspects of hair care.
Rather, tucked away on the second floor in her little nook, is Robin Campbell, and her meticulously organized nail polishes, which warm my heart. Robin is one of the most dedicated manicurists ever, and likely the best in the city. She’s attuned to your skin’s type and reaction with different polishes, so she can help find one that will last the longest for you. Her gel manicures are unlike any elsewhere in the city, and her personality is one of the best to be around.
Robin has bestowed me, friends, and family, with the best manicures and pedicures – lovingly and expertly shaping, buffing, smoothing, and polishing all ten or twenty nails. In her hands, you know you’ve come to the master. Every visit with Robin is a few hours or so of respite from reality – just the best conversation and the best nails to match. Hopefully my next visit stateside brings me to her doorstep!

Kim was my stylist for years when I lived in Philly, but I don’t think I truly appreciated how amazing she and Laurentius Salon are until I moved away and went through an ordeal trying to find a new stylist. I moved to LA, which you would think would be saturated with amazing stylists, but I’ve yet to find one who compares to Kim. I’ve had highly rated, very expensive, stylists turn my hair orange with yellow highlights, super brassy, cheap fake Real Housewives bleach blonde, etc. Super frustrating! Anyway, I was back in Philly recently to attend a wedding and had horrible roots. At the last minute I called Laurentius Salon and they were kind enough to squeeze me in for an appointment with Kim. I left happier than I have been with my hair since I moved to LA. Kim is truly a blonde expert and always finds the perfect shade for her clients. She also has tons of creative ideas if you are looking to switch it up. The salon itself is very chic and modern and I’ve always found the staff to be friendly and welcoming. It isn’t cheap, but I am willing to pay for great hair!

I have been with Kim Tran for over 10 years and followed her to Laurentius Salon. Before her I had overly processed hair that always looked like it was dyed. Kim has magical hands and some serious coloring skills. She is absolute expert with Blonde and when I decided to go darker she pulled that off flawlessly too. Her low/​highlighting techniques make it look like its the hair you were born with. I can not rave enough about her or this salon. While expensive, it is worth every single penny.

Having lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New Orleans with great stylists in each city, I have searched far and wide in Philly. I’m talking trying every stylist at every salon from the mainline to center city… and NOBODY is more incredible than Ed at Laurentius Salon.
He is a true professional, and absolute expert with color. I walk out of the salon feeling like a million bucks, every time. Cut, color, bang trim, I’d trust him with my life. So happy to have found such an incredible guy whose chair I am completely comfy in!

Having moved to Philadelphia from a few states away (and my stylist for the last 13 years) I was nervous about trying to find a new, local magician. I have worn a whole range of colors and cuts, lately sticking to a bold, ruby red. Reds are hard. I know, because I’ve had pinks and oranges and headaches and disappointments from a red effort, or few, gone wrong.
Ashley had saved me from a bad haircut a couple years ago, which helped me try a funky short cut that I had been weary of forever — I loved it, and couldn’t believe short hair could have ever been for me until that ‘do. As that grew out, somewhat awkwardly, she helped me maintain a shape that made sense for quick styling and low maintenance that didn’t make me feel so awkward after all. I’ve opted to grow my hair out long once more, and she’s evened out layers, added volume to my not-​so-​thick locks, and given me honest opinions in a soft way when a color I’ve been thinking on just won’t make sense with my skin tone or when a cut I’d like may be more work than my schedule allows for. That’s something I can appreciate, because I know I can trust her to steer me in a better direction instead of giving me something I said I wanted but maybe didn’t mean.
Over the summer, I was restless. Having vowed to keep scissors away for a while, I went back to the idea of a familiar red color. Ashley had proven to be nothing short of a miracle worker with shears, and her hair is always a vibrant, impressive, beautiful shade of nature, ranging from cool blues and greens to firey oranges. Not only did she give me exactly what I had pictured when trying to tell her what it was I wanted, but she took it one step further to add a hint of color that just wouldn’t work as an all-​over deal to give the red tone a unique purple pop under certain light.
I couldn’t be more happy with Ashley as my permanent hair hero. She’s receptive, pays close attention to details that even I miss, and has yet to disappoint me in any of the countless times I’ve been in her chair. I recommend her to anyone and everyone, and am so glad to have her in such an easy location!

Yes, it’s true… some of us, ahem, fair haired ladies need a little help. So off I go to the very glam Laurentius Salon to see Scott. He’s a magician with hair and when I leave the salon I can’t believe what a great job he’s done. I’ve followed Scott, Kim, and Laurentius for years and seen their fabulous work evolve. These stylists are very up to date with the latest techniques to make your tresses look amazing.
Also, the staff is very accommodating. Hats off to Joe and Erica who have gone out of their way to get me in even with my insane schedule. I feel like I’m visiting with family whenever I go there.

I am a salon snob, so believe me when I say this place is fantastic and you should absolutely come here.
In a past life (aka college) I was a salon coordinator, so I have certain (extremely high) expectations for atmosphere, professionalism, and quality of service. I’m also wary of trying new places — while I’m hair-​adventurous with a stylist I know and trust, I hate the risk of a new place or a new stylist because you just never know what you’re going to get. But flying back to Chicago every few months for a cut & color was becoming financially inconvenient, so I was on the hunt for a shining star here in Philly.
One of my co-​workers always has fantastic hair so I asked her for a recommendation. She sees Laurentius himself but he’s out of my price range (he’s so expensive that my friend was too embarrassed to admit how much she pays!), so I called the salon and just asked for whoever was available on the day and time I needed.
Scott gave me a great haircut and was super fun to chat with. He’s really mellow but also very precise with his work — you can tell he truly cares about every single cut he does. A few weeks later, he trimmed my bangs free of charge and actually cut into the style a little more so I was happier with how it was laying — he went way beyond the typical quick bang trim.
Fast forward another few weeks and I decided it was time for some professional color — as snobby as I am and as embarrassed as I am to admit it, I was box-​dying, and last month I was in a hurry and grabbed a color that was a few shades darker than I like, so once enough of it had washed out, it was time to have a professional coax it back to where I like it.
Rachel did my color, and it turned out wonderfully. She lightened it a little first to lift some more of the darkness, then turned me into the prettiest redhead you’ve ever seen. She upsold me on some kind of rinse that nourishes and helps with tangles (my wet hair is like a jungle) but it was totally worth it. AND she cuts too — so I splurged. I love the way she cut my bangs (with a razor) — very edgy and cute — and she got rid of all the split ends that were bugging me. It’s been three days so far and I’ve received compliments every single day.

My friend and I came here for a mani and pedi after seeing all the great reviews in Instyle and various magazines. I have only one word for the experience… underwhelmed.
The biggest draw to why I wanted to try out this place is that the nail polish lasts about a week or longer and usually my polish last only a few days. This did not happen… both my friend’s and my polish only lasted a few days.
For the amount of time and price. I would not come back. Robin is a very nice person but I feel like the quality was not there.

I’m so happy that I got Scott as my stylist. I was in desperate need of a hair cut but had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. Scott was great and knew exactly what would work for my face and lifestyle. Even though I was his last client of the day on a holiday weekend, he took his time and made sure my hair cut was perfect.
The salon itself was chic and clean. Everyone seemed friendly, chatty, and happy.
Plus, they have a private lot across the street from the salon! This perk alone sold me when I was looking for a new salon to try. I don’t know about you, but looking for parking in the city is never enjoyable… and the Philly metermaids are horrendous. I’ve gotten enough parking tickets that they should thank me for keeping them employed.

I LOVE LAURENTIUS AND HIS TEAM!!!
The salon is modern and beautiful and everyone there is so friendly! My hair and nails always looks amazing when I leave. Laurentius is an amazing stylist! He’ll look at your hair and make suggestions to enhance your hair and do what is best and most healthy for your hair. At first I was worried that he might be a little snobbish since he’s worked with celebrities (Britney) and is called upon for numerous ad campaigns (Rolex, Allure Magazine) but he is SOOOO NICE!!! I always feel like I’m talking to an old friend.
The salon also offers mani/​pedis and Robin is the BEST manicurist I have ever been to. She is a perfectionist when it comes to her work and she is never pushy… I always feel so relaxed and so welcomed when I go there.
As a bonus, all clients get to park in the reserved lot — thanks Laurentius!

Fabulous salon, all around. On this particular salon visit I was in to get my hair colored. I went to Kim & she was absolutely amazing — highly skilled & doesn’t beat around the bush with what will or won’t work with you & your hair. As I was in the seat, she kept coming up with more ideas with what we could do to my hair in the future. She is definitely passionate about creating great hair color!
I think for cuts I’ll head straight to Laurentius Purnama himself though — Ive heard incredible things about his skills all around town so I gotta give him a try at least once!
The salon itself was just awesome too. Very mod design, upbeat feel, upscale but definitely not stodgy. & I was totally won over by the Al Hirschfeld piece thy had on display of Audrey Hephburn. Ooooho man I’ve ALWAYS wanted a Hirschfeld! So jealous! ;)
All in all my experience was very pleasant & everyone there made a nice effort to make sure I was always comfortable and happy. I can definitely see myself making return visits.
Also, there is complimentary parking in the lot across the street. Very convenient!
I’d like to give the place 5 stars, but I think I’d like to have one more experience there before I make my final decision.
