Lipkin Bakery

Lipkin’s Bakery has been a staple in the neighborhood for years and years and they are by far the cheapest bakery around. Problem is, it is filthy. Just a few weeks ago I commented to the girls in the store that the place was in need of a thorough cleaning. I had stopped going there for some time due to horrible health inspections (mouse droppings in dough mixer), but after a fire closed them for several months and they reopened I figured it would be clean and fresh. That did not last long. This weekend I purchased a loaf of challah bread. While eating dinner I noticed a dark spot in the bread. I ripped open the piece of bread to find a dead roach baked in the bread. DISGUSTING! A recent health inspection found cigarette ashes in the dough mixer and overall uncleanliness, among other violations. You can read their health inspections reports at

Tried several things here. Red velvet cake, éclair, and apple turnover. All dry and stale. They must’ve been sitting out for a very long time. Was disappointed that nothing on display was really labled. Maybe the fresh made cakes are okay but from what I had I don’t plan to return.

all kins of goodies tucked away around Rhawn and Castor in NE. Going strong for 75plus years. Family owned and operated. The Miami Ryes and Onion rolls and onion Boards are insanely great! Schnecken and cookies are a hit as well. It can be slow to order and there is always a line but you know that means it is the real deal!

It has been some time since we’ve had anything at Lipkin’s so when we were driving through the area we just had to stop.
This is the first time I have ever actually set foot in the store.
It takes me back to the old neighborhood in Queens where I remember there is an aisle for customers to squish into, the show case and an aisle for the employee’s to squish into.
IT“S SMALL… with plenty of selection to choose from.
Unfortunately the items we chose this time did not make the grade.
There was every type of knish to choose from and we had the potato, spinish, kasha and mushroom. Stick to the mushroom, overall they were dry and a little too doughy.
I tried the almond roll based on another Unilocal review. Don’t get me wrong, they did not skimp on the almonds or almond paste, it was just…(heavens forbid) too much of everything.
The Linzer torte cookies… pass.
Even the challah was dry.
Must have been a bad day… for us as well as them.
I will be back, because there’s enough there to choose from… but only when we are in the area.

Lots of mixed feelings here. Mixed because this place is hit or miss. For me, it was mostly miss, with a little hit.
So I came in looking for a pareve cake and I instantly doubted their kashrut because they claim to be kosher but have no kosher certification (that i could see), are open on Shabbat, and there’s no clear delineation between where they store their dairy items and where they store their pareve items. So I asked which is pareve and which is not and they told me that the items on certain colored plates are dairy and certain plates are pareve. Seems like this kind of system is prone to mistakes. Apparently the kashrut is supervised by a non-​orthodox Rabbi, so if you’re conservative kosher, I guess you’re ok. Suffice to say, if you’re looking for orthodox (not-​conservative) kosher items, don’t bother here.
As far as the items itself, it’s hit or miss. The knishes I had were all old and nasty, as were the rainbow cookies and other pastries. Threw them out. However, one cookie and the apple cake were fantastic. So if you have to buy something from here, special order it, that way you can guarantee (somewhat) its freshness.
A positive note is that the baked goods here are very reasonably priced. I got a whole cake for $ 12 that I would have thought was $ 30 easy. And that was pretty good too.
The customer service in store was adequate — although keep your receipt if you pre-​pay because some people don’t — so they assumed that I hadn’t. I didn’t have my receipt, so fortunately they had the carbon copy of the receipt showing I paid. Outside of that, I was contacted by management to apologize for my experience, which I do appreciate and have updated my review with an extra star because of the effort.
For those that don’t have the time, energy, or interest in playing with this bakery — I don’t blame you, because I don’t either.

The cake we got my BF seemed to like a joke. Asked for a Spurs basketball logo and they put the one they used fro the early 90’s on it, very embarrassing arriving at the party in 2014 with a logo from 1992. However it did look like a HS apprentice made it, not professional quailty looking at all. I do like they accept checks but come on its 2014, get a credit/​debit machine.

My brother, mother and I shared two boxes between us for only $ 12! Not only are the prices affordable, the quality is incredible. The star players were the lemon whoopie pies and the almond Danish!
We got a freshly baked loaf of pumpernickel, still warm in the bag. The woman who helped us was extremely helpful, friendly and patient for us first-​timers-​we will definitely be repeat customers.

My kids love they chocolate chips cookies, and bagel, they had everything fresh just like I love it :)

The best bakery ever very friendly staff, fresh product you can’t ask for anything more and the price is the best.

Our local synagogue recently switched to Lipkins for the weekly challah bread, after years with Rolings. I couldn’t believe how amazing Lipkins’ bread is!!! So much softer and chewier. Many other families said the same thing. Then I tried their hamantaschen, which was sold at Creekside Co-​op. Unbelievably buttery and soft, I fell I love! Best Jewish bakery, I’m looking forward to a trip to the main site!

What can I say. This is the real deal. Even though I’ve been living near the northeast for 20 years, and passing through regularly, I had never stopped to see this place. Absolutely delicious knishes. Bagels are outstanding, in the traditional Jewish Way, never quite a circle. Chocolate chip cookies are excellent. Chocolate cigar roll, not so much. They have an unbelievable selection of all kinds of items in a store the size of a First floor Mayfair house, and you only get to stand in the entryway, stuffed with eight other individuals.
This is an experience. The food is outstanding, prices not so cheap, the staff intense, abundant, and ready to wait on you. Be prepared to want to buy everything.

Great knishes, humentaschen (sp?), rye and challah bread, and other goodies, and worth a visit. However, if you buy cannoli in a Jewish bakery, you honestly have no right to complain. The only downs are that it’s often crowded and sometimes the staff is a little confused as far as who’s next or indifferent when you need help. Further, Lipkin’s isn’t the place to go if you’re in a hurry; there’s invariably 2 or more people ahead of you who have a million questions or who are buying out the store. Expect to be there at least 15 minutes. Not perfect, but still pretty damn good.

I was super excited to finally stop in this bakery after reading the great reviews they had on Unilocal.The delicious sweet smells that wafted into our nostrils when we walked in were intoxicating. However, that’s all the good I have to say about this place.
They have a lot to offer in the small space they occupy but before I could check everything out, I was constantly being approached by a hoard of ladies behind the counter demanding to offer me help. There’s nothing more annoying than being bombarded by sales people when you’ve just walked into a store! After I placed my order, another lady asked if she could help me. When I politely declined her help, she says to me– «We know mandarin» chuckled and turned around. Sure, I obviously look Asian and I am in fact Chinese, but what makes you think I speak mandarin?! It was a completely unnecessary and obnoxious remark and needless to say, I was disgustingly offended.
We ordered two ricotta cannoli and two knishes. The ricotta filling was overpoweringly sweet and had a super dense, thick consistency. We actually ended up throwing out the cannolis. The knishes were dry and pasty and one of them, the cheese and broccoli, was way too salty. Maybe my judgment was clouded by the awful customer service but regardless, I will not be a repeat customer.

I grew up knowing this place as «Uncle Mitch’s Delicious Knishes». The owner, Mitch, went to school with my dad, so this was a frequent indulgence for my family. I’m not bragging, just merely stating my very fortunate proximity to this wonderful little bakery.
After moving to southern Maryland when I was 11, and suffering from a conspicuous lack of authentic Jewish food, I went back in college to say hi and stock up. And it was just as I remembered it. What might look like a tiny hole in the wall in Northeast Philly is probably one of the greatest family-​owned Jewish bakeries out there. People say that your sense of smell is your most evocative sense, and they’re right. I was immediately thrust back in time at least fifteen years when that wave of sweetness hit my nostrils.
The knishes are easily one of the best things they make. My favorites are by far the rice and the pizza knishes. Remember to toast it up before you eat it for optimum flavor potential (do NOT microwave their knishes)! Give it time to cool down, so you don’t burn your tongue, but once it’s cool enough to touch, toss the silverware aside and go all fingers with it. You’ll abandon the fork and knife anyway as soon as you taste it. They also make a mean cheesecake, and the rest of their desserts are great too. Try their baklava and really anything with sugar on it. Nothing’s too moist or too dry here — everything is just the way it should be. You can’t beat the prices either. I plan on going back the next time I’m in town for another nostalgic experience of pure Jewish deliciousness. And I can’t wait!

The potato knishes are pretty good and the hamantaschen is decent. It’s no Hershel’s or 4^th street but it’s a good local spot.

I make periodic runs here to keep my mother happy on my way to visit her. Well, it’s not exactly on my way, it’s totally out of my way, but it’s worth the shlep. I go for the knishes but wind up buying all kinds. There’s always a line of the usual Northeast characters. The old people, the weirdos, the older, single women who buy one of ten different things. I’m ALWAYS the youngest. The bread is amazing, especially the pumpernickel with or without raisins, and the multigrain. But, really, everything is good. The place is a carbohydrate orgy.

Reading the reviews, I was pretty excited to try the knishes here, but after buying a variety yesterday, I’m left a bit disappointed. For me, the mood was pretty much set when we asked one of the counter people what kind of vegetables were in the Mixed Vegetable knish, and was told «it’s a bag of frozen mixed vegetables-​carrots and stuff.» I’m not even knocking them using frozen vegetables, but c’mon…
Tried the cherry cheese, potato and spinach. Cherry cheese — didn’t even have the consistency of a knish, was too dense, and I couldn’t taste any kind of cheese flavor. Potato — definitely the best of the bunch, with a flaky crust, good potato flavor, semi sweet and especially peppery. Spinach — kind of soggy, tasted like some frozen spinach was added that wasn’t drained particularly well.
I’d like to try some of the other things here, as everything looked really good, but I think I’ll keep looking for good knishes in Philly.

This was my first stop in my quest to find closest-​to-​NY knishes in Philly. These potato knishes are sweet with a slight peppery taste. They weren’t bad, but I’m gonna keep looking.

I cannot drive by without stopping in for at least their delicious cinnamon buns with nuts. Also high on the list; cheese pockets, tea biscuits and hamantaschen. Their pumpernickel and knishes (potato, kasha, cinnamon raisin-​rice, vegetable, mock liver, pumpkin (around Halloween) are exceptional. So is their rye bread (w/​seeds of course!), multigrain and challah.

Wow. Stepping in here and taking in the smells and sights is incredible. The cases are packed with delicious items of all sorts, from cookies to challah to knishes. The long line moved fairly quickly and suddenly I had to make some choices. I ended up with a vanilla cupcake (how boring, I know) and some kasha knish. Both were very tasty. The cupcake had too much icing, but that’s easy to take care of. The kasha knishes are incredible and I can’t wait to try all of the other flavors (including but not limited to cheese, spinach, ‘like liver’, and potato).
Their bagels looked great, as did all of the babkas. The prices are right especially for the single items. 3 small knishes, 1 cookie and a cupcake were under $ 3. I’ll definitely be back.
