I LOVE this place! I always get the very best glasses and the very best help at Modern Eyes Optical! Very stylish glasses and people who really care. They really work with you to make sure you are satisfied (and even help you pick the right frames for your face!) What else would someone want from a business?

I was in desperate need of sunglasses repair while I was on a business trip. Found these guys and they were awesome. The store manager repaired my sunglasses and when I asked him how much all he asked for in return was a donation into «the pig» for a charity they are collecting for. I gladly donated!

I was in the need for glasses for daily wear but, I did not have my eye exam here. Modern Eye is definitely the place for unique eye wear. But the prices of the frames ALONE which start at $ 99 and can go as high as $ 200, can be a enough to make you think twice. But I went to try on glasses to get a feel of what style would work for me.
The only reason I purchased my frames from here was I have great vision insurance that greatly reduced the price. Besides the staff is sweet and very knowledgeable. I did not feel I was pressured in anyway and a staff member by the name of Pixie helped me for nearly 30 minutes to narrow down my choice of frames.
I only had my glasses for three days and so far so good. All their lenses come with UV protection which was an option my eye doctor recommended.
They are willing to work with you and worth a look-​see.

I got into the eyeglass racket at the ripe old age of three. Having notoriously bad eyesight (nearsighted, far sighted, amblyopia, with a bonus astigmatism) I have been to every type of eye care professional imaginable. I dreaded the examinations, the endless prescription tweaking, the paltry selection of frames and the general I helpfulness of the whole mess. That is until 2009 when a coworker suggested I give Modern Eye a shot. The staff is bare none the best in this and any field. Jeez Louise, they are so helpful professional and patient it’s mind boggling. I have most often had Dr Bryan for eye exams and he is wonderful. He’s answered every question I’ve had about vision (even the kooky ones) with console explanations and insight. If every part of aspect of my life ran as smoothly as my dealings with Modern Eye, I would explode from joy and happiness.

I’ve been coming here for years and every single time it’s like a mini celebration. The staff is a delight and they take personal interest in helping you. They are genuinely excited to fill the usual pair of ‘new’ vintage frames I bring with me. Yet they have an amazing selection of frames and I usually get one of those, too! I wouldn’t go anywhere else because — all around — it simply wouldn’t compare.

I can’t say enough great things about this place, and I wish I’d found it sooner. I came here on a recommendation from a colleague whose frames were awesome. I’d gotten my eye exam a few months prior elsewhere and took my Rx to Modern Eye on 13^th Street. I tried on about 20 different pairs of glasses, and settled on a gorgeous frame from Claire Goldsmith. Jess, who attended me, said it’d be about 10 – 14 days until I received my new spectacles. I let her know I’d be going away on vacation and she made sure that my glasses were ready before leaving.
Got my new glasses, and the prescription needed to be corrected. Dropped them off to Josh, and they were ready in just 2 days! I picked them up the night before I left for vacation. From day one, I’ve had a wonderful experience. Their customer service is beyond superb! They really go out of their way to ensure the customer is happy, which is why when it’s time to get new spectacles, I’ll be heading back to ME.

Great glasses, not «cookie cutter hipster» at all. I am in my late 50’s and Jess treated me like an individual. She made the experience of buying glasses so enjoyable. If you are looking for glasses, go see Jess at Modern Eye!

Fantastic, professional service in a convenient location. There are always lots of people here to help you so I have never had to wait very long. The selection is pretty amazing and well-​curated so there is no garbage to sort through.
I visited for my annual eye exam. The exams take place upstairs and the office is comfortable for the most part. It’s dark enough so that your dilated pupils don’t have to suffer until you go outside. They offer great solar protection after, in the form of inserts if you wear glasses, or disposable sunglasses if you forget yours.
I had a great experience here. I have one more visit to complete my contact lens fitting but I am really happy with Modern Eye. They have been extremely helpful helping me navigate the insurance nightmare as well. Thanks!

I have a long-​standing relationship with my optometrist in south Jersey. As thrilled as I am with the service my eye doctor provides me, I thought their selection of frames was lacking.
Enter Modern Eye.
Entering their shop was a little daunting, at first. I’ve never been in an eyewear store in which everything was housed in a display case, meaning that I couldn’t just pull it from the shelf to try on. But the attendant who helped me was so knowledgeable about their product lines, and so attuned to what I said about my tastes and preferences, that this concern quickly faded. I eventually chose a pair of Carter Bond frames – a departure from my usual 60s-​ad man styling, but a breath of fresh air.
Some notes: although their eyewear and gallery are modern, their POS system is anything but, and did require that my card authorization be called in. Not the staff’s fault, for sure, but a dedicated POS solution – like the Square stand – might be a really good option here.

My main reason for visiting Modern Eye was the glasses selection. I’ve worn contacts pretty much exclusively for the last 10 years simply because every optometrist I visit has hideous glasses. I used my VSP insurance to get both an eyeglass and contact lens exam, planning to get glasses with my insurance and later order contacts.
When I arrived for my appointment, the staff was lovely and super helpful but the female doctor I saw seemed to be in a hurry, rushing me in and out. At one point, after dilating my pupils, I came back 15 minutes later (per her instructions) and she asked if she could step out to run an errand. I think the look on my face clearly expressed «no» so she continued with the exam, in record time. I realized later that the prescription in my right eye was way off and had to reschedule another appointment to get it fixed. The second doctor was much better but kept me waiting 30 minutes beyond my appointment time.
My glasses, the main reason for coming here, are really gorgeous and I was able to choose a pair within my budget, despite the fact that 90% of the glasses were over $ 500. I was really concerned that because my contact prescription was wrong, the glasses were likely wrong, too, but the gentleman working the counter assured me this wasn’t the case but had no real explanation why. He also couldn’t pronounce the last name of the doctor I saw, so needless to say, I’m skeptical.
To add insult to injury, when I tried to order contacts through Walgreens and submitted a request, I got an email back saying my request was denied because «No such patient exists.» Yeah. I was there twice in the last month.
So in the end, I’m really unhappy with my experience at Modern Eye. All those optometrists with the un-​hip glasses? Well, they were incredibly professional and went to great lengths to ensure my prescriptions were correct and I never had any trouble ordering contacts. Now that I have my super cool frames, I will likely go elsewhere in the future.

I was particularly impressed with the gentleman who helped me look for frames to try on – he had a great eye. I tried on a bunch of frames to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything, but the pair that suited me best was the first pair he picked out.
Also, he adjusted the frames on the glasses I already had for free. (They weren’t fitting me well.)

I went to the one in central city, and I enjoyed the experience with them. Modern Eye has elegant decorations, broad choices of frame (I think they have lots of special design from non-​general brands), and nice shop assistants.
Christian helped me to get my lenses, and he is nice and efficient. I already have my own frame, and told him I want the thinnest lenses. He provided me the choice and get everything done in 20 mins.
I picked up my glasses today. John helped me to adjust the frame in order to suit me completely. A conscious and great job!
I went to another eye glasses store to get eye exam right before coming to here because the other one offers a much cheaper price.
I do suggest you to get eye exam in a cheaper place (Eg, Pearle Vision), and then come here to get your glasses done.

I don’t wear glasses on a daily basis, so I tend to stick with pretty mundane frames. But my husband ALWAYS gets his glasses here. The selection is phenomenal and not your typical eyeglass shop varieties. They have anything from conservative yet sharp/​stylish to downright funky. It’s great. Everyone who works there has been there for years and they are always so welcoming and helpful. They are great with working through your insurance.

I wear glasses, but have a very hard face to fit. I tried on 25+ frames before settling on a pair that seemed to fit, but after a few weeks of wearing (and many trips back to Modern Eye to have them readjusted), they were still not sitting right. (This was through no fault of Modern Eye– the glasses just weren’t perfect, and I’m super persnickety/​sensitive about fit). The folks at Modern Eye worked with me to get a new pair of frames that fit perfectly, and no one ever acted grumbly towards me for literally visiting the office 10+ times to ask for readjustments, etc. I do not know that I could have been that friendly and patient with a bothersome customer.
Also, in general, they have a very well-​curated collection of frames. I was on some sort of a budget, and they happily showed me a number of frames in my price range. They also had a good mix of trendy/​younger frames, quirky/​older frames, and simple/​unobtrusive frames. Seems to be something for everyone. I had an eye exam with the doctor, and though I don’t have particularly difficult eyes and am not the harshest judge of these things, the exam was thorough and friendly– one of the better eye appointments I’ve had.
I also visited the University City location to look at some frames when my first pair wasn’t working out, and they have a different (and also great) selection, so I’d recommend visiting both locations if you’re looking for exactly the right pair.

If you’re the type who needs an alarm clock with extra large numbers and have to put your glasses right by your bed just in case you need to get up in the middle of the night, then this is your place.
The staff is super friendly and they’ll give you their honest opinion when your pupils are dilated and you’re trying to pick out a pair of new glasses.
I can call and order contacts and they’ll usually arrive within a day or two. They give a thorough exam and have the coolest specs in the city. They don’t accept all insurances, so be sure to double check before you hit them up. Even if they don’t accept your insurance, they still give you a discount.
Going to the eye doctor has never been so exciting!

I found their selection to be very limited. If you want to walk out of here looking like a cookie cutter hipster nerd, then this is the place for you. But if you want a beautiful pair of glasses that actually look like they belong on your face and compliment your natural beauty, this place is going to be very hit or miss.
The person who worked with me was patient but not too friendly. I guess I expected more from the rave reviews.

Update: shortly after reviewing Modern Eye, I was contacted by the business owner and offered a refund for the frames. I stopped back in last week and the manager was friendly and totally cool about it, and gave me a full refund. Thanks for the great customer service, guys!

These people are fantastic.
I had a horrible experience with Warby Parker, and went to Modern Eye for help. WP kept sending me lenses I couldn’t see out of, and the Modern Eye folks were extremely helpful in identifying the problem and giving me the vocabulary to understand and communicate it back to Warby Parker.
When Warby Parker still couldn’t get it right, I broke down and brought their frames back to Modern Eye to make the lenses. They were so friendly, and so helpful, and the lenses they made me are perfect. And they gave me a discount for coming back for help a third time.
Exceptional customer service, expert product.

I haven’t gotten new glasses in almost 7 years. Needless to say, I was long overdue. The staff at Modern Eye made what could have been a painful experience, an awesome one.
They did a lot of things right in my three trips there. First, they explained my insurance benefits to me about 10x better than the VSP website was able to. The doctor gave me trial contacts to test out, and a second pair of the kind I liked to tide me over until I bought boxes. And since I was alone picking out glasses, the staff helped me pick ones out to try on and gave me their opinions, even suggesting I step into the sunlight by the window to take a picture with my blackberry to show friends!
I came away with a brilliant pair of Salt frames and crystal clear lenses. I just got them today, and I’m in love already. From start to finish, I was treated with not only respect, but with an open friendliness by everyone, including the fantastic doctor! I would be prepared to pay for premium frames if you go with Modern Eye, but the service and quality of the final product is so worth it. Have a look-​see sometime to check out their frames, and cool interior. You won’t be sorry!
