We specialize in pain relief and stress relief women’s health and general wellness. In addition Laura Hawley, an MSW as well as an acupuncturist, treats people with anxiety, depression and PTSD to enhance and stabilize mood and to engage the body in healing the mind.

Heather Shultz has an active yoga practice and focuses on sports injury.

History

Established in 1998.

In private practice since 1998, Laura Hawley formed Open City Healing Arts in 2010 to include community acupuncture, and has seen many many happy patients since then.

In 2014 we were fortunate to have Heather Shultz, Lic Ac join us.

We pride ourselves on providing the very best acupuncture treatment to our patients in a setting that is calm, caring and convenient. We also provide private acupuncture, and specialize in the treatment of pain as well as of anxiety, depression and stress.

Laura has been in practice since 1996 and has lived in Philly since 1998. An MSW as well as an acupuncturist, Laura has a commitment to excellent accessible care which addresses the mind and the body. She is delighted by the relief acupuncture offers her patients, and is interested in healing and transformation. She is noted for an excellent sense of humor, and great listening skills, as well as a gentle effective technique.

Laura teaches Beginners Mindfulness classes and workshops at Open City.

I’ve been needled by almost everyone in Philadelphia (with an acupuncture practice, that is), and I’ve been most impressed by Laura and her staff. I love the individual attention in an affordable open setting and can tell they really love their work. No sticking needles willy nilly and abandoning you for an hour — they really treat each person as an individual and as a whole.

After eight months of dealing with a very painful case of plantar fasciitis, I was desperate for help. I had tried going to the podiatrist, stretching, supports, night braces, new shoes. Nothing worked. I decided to try acupuncture as a last resort and I am so happy I did. Laura was wonderful. She talked to me about what my issues were and explained the treatment. I was so surprised when it actually worked. I’ve visited four times now and my feet may not be 100% perfect, but there is marked improvement with every session. This is the only treatment that has made a substantial difference in my pain. I am so grateful for Laura’s help and highly recommend her to anyone who is dealing with pain issues.

One of the hardest parts about moving to a new city is finding people you really vibe with and trust, this includes health practitioners. The very first time I visited Laura at Open City, I realized she had the absolute best tableside manner that I’ve ever encountered. She genuinely cares about her patients and their wellbeing.
I’ve gone elsewhere because it was cheaper a few times, but it was ultimately a waste of time and money because I didn’t leave with the same results, and because, honestly, I missed Laura.
The space is quiet and comfortable, easy to access, but most importantly, the treatment is effective coupled with top notch, friendly service. You can’t go wrong here.

This place is a treasure. The combination of convenience, affordability, and excellent healing informed my decision to make Open City Healing Arts part of my weekly wellbeing routine. I first went to Laura because of knee pain from overuse, the improvement after her treatment was remarkable. I continue going to maintain balance in my body overall, troubleshoot any health issues that arise, and support my general health. My weekly appointment is a time when I can relax and rest and feel cared for all at once. Strongly recommended.

Laura and Open City have helped me move from «surgery for sure» to a 90% reduction in pain related to Basal (thumb) join arthritis. Combining bi-​weekly acupuncture with quick PT + herb therapy (guided by Laura) has all worked wonders!
The environment at OCH is relaxed and almost fun, the needles don’t hurt and Laura is a total pro! Clearly OCH is the place for acupuncture in Center City!

Laura is the best acupuncturist I’ve been to, and I’ve had some really good ones.
A highlight of my relationship with her was when I had a very bad episode with my back. I could barely walk. Laura was efficient and caring and had me back on my feet and into a plane for a vacation in 3 – 4 hours. Over the next few days, my back was gradually relaxing and recovering, and in a week I was better. I know that I would not have made it on that plane without Laura’s help.
In my regular visits to Laura, I am constantly impressed by her professionalism, her great instincts, and her interest in hearing how I’m doing fully and carefully.
I can’t recommend Laura and OCHA enough.

Yikes… a 1 hour massage is a much better use of money. $ 110 dollars for the therapist to place a few acupuncture needles in and walk out of the room for an hour?
Highway robbery. I am waking up this morning with the same back pain I had yesterday and now need to find a message therapist.

I went to see Laura to help me with extreme back pain that I had been suffering with for 4 months. I had already seen several doctors, went to a chiropractor, had 2 epidurals, and went to physical therapy. None of these helped me to get a level of pain relief that would allow me to do my day to day activities. I was even prohibited from walking the 5 blocks from home to work. Laura was recommended by several of my friends. I admit that I was a bit of a skeptic about acupuncture. I believed in the idea of acupuncture but honestly never thought it would help this level of back pain. After just 3 sessions with Laura I felt remarkably better. I had a treatment on Friday evening and Saturday morning I felt so much better I was actually able to do things and not just lay flat on my back. It’s now Monday and I’m still feeling very good. It’s not magic and I’m not ‘cured’ but the difference is remarkable. Laura is warm, caring, and really listens to you when you explain your issues. She has a great sense of humor and definitely will put you at ease. She explains everything as she is doing it so there are no surprises. Her office is very easy to get to and she seems to have very accommodating hours. If you are considering acupuncture, please contact Laura.

Laura’s practice here in Philadelphia is exceptional, and is simply the best in Philadelphia. Other practices will charge 2 – 5 times as much, and none of them have Laura’s experience. It is so, so rare to find an amazing acupuncturist, with 20+ years experience, that has a sliding scale payment system to help those sometimes in the most need. Don’t waste your time with any other practice in this city, you’ll always find yourself back at Open City.

An acupuncture appointment at Open City Healing with Laura is far beyond a good experience from start to finish. First the actual space is clean, quiet and calm. It is a wonderful place to walk into. Laura takes her time with you and really listens to whatever your issue is and is nothing but kind, respectful, intelligent and honest. She asks good questions and answers any that you may have. She is so easy to talk to and totally puts you at ease. The open rooms are wonderful if you are on a little more of a budget. They don’t feel crowded and she still takes personal time with just you. I am visiting from Chicago and was really stressed prior to a talk– I Unilocaled «community acupuncture» and stumbled upon Laura. She was able to take me on short notice and was extremely warm. She took good care of me– my stress levels plummeted. She also has her masters in social work and it’s clear that her social work training has informed her bedside manner. She has a gentle needling technique but very effective.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Laura Hawley. She takes time to listen to your ailments (for me, complicated, ongoing things like insomnia and anxiety) and addresses them specifically and compassionately. She’s seen me through two difficult pregnancies, joint pain, and anxiety, and she’s made me feel 100% better because she’s so attentive and thoughtful. Our discussions before treatment have been equally helpful — she has a background in social work, so she’s especially good at listening to your ailments and thinking them through holistically.
When I started going to acupuncture, I was really skeptical that it could really do much. Laura has made me a believer — I’ve seen and felt the results myself. She’s affordable (with a sliding scale) and it’s super-​convenient to schedule an appointment with her online. If you’re new to acupuncture or want to return to it, you can’t do better than Laura. She’s just spectacularly, hard-​to-​believe wonderful.

My husband and I have been going to see Laura at Open City Healing Arts for several years now. I was dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety, and he had repetitive stress injuries and a dislocated rib (ouch). We both see a chiropractor but needed a little extra help. Laura came highly recommended from my chiropractor.
I’m afraid of needles, so the thought of acupuncture was a little daunting. Laura is very personable, has a great bedside manner, and explained the entire process so clearly that I was willing to try it, and I’m glad I did. I sleep better after a treatment, my stress levels drop, and the anxiety that nearly crippled me is basically under control these days. My husband’s issues couldn’t be solved with acupuncture alone, but the treatments help manage the pain and are a necessary part of his routine.
Laura does both private appointments and open room treatments. The open room treatments are booked at 15 minute intervals and charged on a sliding scale, so it is always affordable, no matter your income level. There are four tables in the open room. When you arrive, you chat with Laura for a bit about what’s going on with you today, and then move into the treatment room where she treats the points that will help you the most with your problem. She also stretches beyond acupuncture into other aspects of Chinese medicine, and may recommend supplements or breathing exercises or some other treatment in addition to the acupuncture treatment.
Laura’s space and the treatment room is warm and comfortable, and she’s so friendly that going is something I look forward to.

Laura, the acupuncturist behind Open City Healing Arts, is completely exceptional. She’s so kind, welcoming, and attentive. Rather than other CSA (community supported acupuncture) clinic’s practice of the 5 minute chat, and then generally hitting some of the usual points, she will talk to you throughout the process, finding the exact points that have an impact on your problem.
If I could give her 6 stars, I would. I recommend Laura to anyone who’s nervous about acupuncture as well. Her chipper mood and demeanor make you feel like you can tell her anything — very important if you need to talk about any old issues/​injuries that might be uncomfortable to talk about with a stranger.
Add to this that her location is so ridiculously convenient, and you’ve found your acupuncturist. She has ‘open room’ days (shared acupuncture room with other people who are generally asleep or otherwise don’t bother you if you don’t bother them) as well as a private practice. I can’t recommend her enough.

Laura Hawley is a wonderful acupuncturist — she CURED my panic attacks and insomnia! And her new «open city» practice, which makes it SO much more affordable, is great. You can choose the open room, where you are treated in a lovely big space alongside up to three other patients, for a really affordable sliding fee, or if you are shy you can choose the private room at more traditional prices. Laura is simply a brilliant genius and a healer par excellence! I HIGHLY recommend.

I first went to Laura and Open City for chronic back problems that three chiropractors and two physical therapists still hadn’t fixed. After just three treatments? BACK PAIN NO MORE!
I now visit Laura for other (less painful) matters, and look forward to every visit. The new community room at Open City is zen-​fully clean, warm and peaceful… and it’s affordable even on my starving artist (trust me) budget.
