My go-to cheap beer take-out place. Sure, it’s shady with all the wasted lurkers, but I get a 6-pack of lager for $ 7, so I can’t complain. One side is straight beverage take-out, the other operates as a brightly lit pseudo bar. I keep my eyes to myself when I wander in there.

I have been frequenting«9th and Wash,» as my friends and I call it, for more than five years. We first started coming back in the day before we were legally allowed to buy beer. I assume we went here because it was the scummiest place we could find. We waited outside in the rain and stopped drunks and bums as they staggered by and asked them to go in and buy us 40s of Olde ‘E’. Ah, the good old days. There is a changeless cast of derelicts that populate 9th& Wash(come on, it’s not called Wings & Such or whatever… not REALLY.) They’re mostly Mexican and Asian, and boy, do they get hammered.(My favorite is the Vietnamese guy with the mangled hand who rides the giant bike. He loves to listen to cheesy music and dance, and is always friendly. He never begs, either.) They stay in their plexiglass enclosure, and pose no threat to the normals who come in for take-out.

I last night learned that this place actually has a real store name and isn’t just ‘the beer store at 9th and Washington” or just«the beer store». They have a divided off section that acts as the«bar» in here, and a walk up window where the nice man behind the plexiglass will supply you with whatever beer and/or cigarettes you need. I’ve never ventured into the bar section but they do have food off the grill in there, which kind of surprised me. As mentioned before, the guy who runs the place is really cool and remembers you and what you drink just like any bartender/shopowner would. In fact, he even complimented me on how nice I looked when I stopped in there wearing a suit for a sixer after getting back from a dry wedding. Not what I expected to hear at 1:30 in the morning from a guy while buying beer, but it did make me like him a little more. The other day while I was in there I realized that you can also order a shot at the take out window when you buy your beer, because I saw some other guy do it. While I probably won’t take advantage of this, it’s good to know it happens and when I saw it go down I just thought«that’s so cool». Like Wings More is.

yeah, i know, you never knew this place had a name, well it does and you best learn it! this is basically a satellite of taqueria veracruzana to me, for what is awesome mexican food without a nice cold beer? just awesome mexican food. my circle of friends call this place«the grime» or «the beer garden» or «the hockey arena», you’ll have to actually go to figure the last one out. they do have, i believe, the cheapest six pack of yuengling lager in the hood and some of the drunkest mexicans you’ll ever see. this place has served me well for the last few years, just dont take your girlfriend along unless you like fighting. the owners name is sonny, he’s nice.
