The tow service is actually quite good.
The problem: they like to tow to Peak Garage. And although their labor and shop charges are reasonable, Peak Garage charges double the typical retail price for parts. For example: I was charged over $ 300 – over eleven years ago, when prices were lower! – for an alternator for a common GM car. Not for the whole job, but for the part itself. Alternators for this car retail for about $ 120. The mechanic on duty ended up buying a premium version of the part at retail and billing separately for the parts run. A little markup is expected. But to a cent, it was 100% markup on top of retail, because that’s what Peak Garage does, at least to Tucsonans.
The setup is the equivalent of mud farming – the old scam that had farmers ploughing a section of road to make it muddy, then charging city folk to tow them out. Eddie’s tows stranded motorists to Peak Garage where there’s no competition in town and cost to get to a place where there is (Tucson, Casa Grande) is even higher than it would have been if the motorist opted for a direct tow from wherever he’s stranded. They’re operating just on the right side of the law. County attorneys in AZ have successfully gone after shops that exploit stranded motorists, but Emil Martan knows what he’s doing. Nevertheless it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen, at least if the Highway Patrol still treats this as the go-​to towing company on I-​10.
Insist on an estimate and leave if the parts costs are out of line. Better still: Avoid this one and call a tow from Marana or Casa Grande depending on where you break down.

This is the best towing service I’ve ever had. We were in the middle of I-​10. They promised to come in twenty minutes, but actually came in 15 minutes.
