History

Established in 1994.

Values, culture, respect and sharing are the basis of the services we offer all year round. Together and in partnership with local community members, Parks and Recreation throughout San Luis Obispo County, local hotels, the Pismo Beach RV Resort, and with Cal Poly Surf Club, we’re committed to sharing and passing along our knowledge and providing the absolute highest level of service possible in a safe and fun environment.

Our unique and dynamic approach, fun and entertaining instructors, combined with the highest quality surfing gear, has earned us the recognition and loyalty of our students. We’re excited about surfing, teaching and sharing our passion!

I had a blast and would highly recommend sandbar surf to anyone. I was in the middle of battling a stomach flu on vacation but decided to suck it up and give it a go anyways, and in glad I didn’t skip this experience. Instructor was patient and always positive, always encouraging. I forgot how sick I was while getting a great work out… How does that even happen? My favorite part of the lesson was learning the technicalities of surfing, as he never told me to do something without explaining why I should do it. My fiancé booked this class not knowing we were getting 2days of lessons, and when he found out I wasn’t feeling well enough for the second lesson, he happily refunded the 2ND day and wished me the best. Class act.

The surfing lessons were amazing. We received good sized boards and got nice waves on the beach. The instructors, Micah and Evan, were very helpful, giving us safety tips, practicing standing with us, and assisting us in the water. Unlike with other surfing lessons, I managed to catch waves on my own within the first half hour and rode at least 12 waves, as opposed to previously never being able to stand up on the board at all. All in all, a fantastic experience that I would highly recommend.

Last minute trip to Pismo and we were able to schedule a double private for my two kids (10 yrs old and 7 yrs old). Our instructor was named Chance and he was great with the kids and very encouraging to my first timer 7 yr old who was a bit reluctant to even take lessons. Chance had them smiling and riding waves… and created a real highlight of our summer. Thanks!

Had an amazing experience taking first time surf lesson at sandbar. Took a private class for me and my 6 year old daughter since she was little young for the group class. It turned out great, and our instructor let us work at our own pace. My daughter stuck to riding the waves laying on the board for most part, and attempted standing up towards the end as she got comfortable. I was up standing for a few seconds within the first ½ hr. Overall, we had a fun introduction to surfing and the experience kept us interested to try it again

Took my Girl Scout troop to let Johnny and his instructors give them a taste of surfing. It was so easy to book and all my questions were clearly and promptly answered. There were several instructors in the water with the girls giving each student individual attention. After some stretching and some basic instruction even the girls who had been nervous about trying to surf went right into the water. They all had a good time, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience!

Priceless Experience! We reserved 3 days for my children 14 and 8. Making the reservation was a breeze as well as Jonny’s follow up texts regarding directions. Staff (Alyssa, Ryan, Ellie and Christin) were patient and enthusiastic which helped alleviate some anxiety. Prior to hitting the water students are briefed on surfing safety and etiquette.
Day 1
Uriah the 8 yr old was up surfing in the first 20 minutes. The 14 yr old spent first day getting comfortable with waves and building confidence/​muscle memory.
Day 2
20 minutes into the morning the 14 yr old found her inner surfer and was standing up catching some waves. The children spent the morning catching waves. Remarkable day. The joy could be felt a block away.
Day 3
This day was met with enthusiasm as well as sore muscles. Again staff was incredible and gave the children pointers on how to better control and improve their technique. Giving my children this experience was the best money I’ve spent in ages.
Tips
As a helicopter parent I rented a wet suit and hung out in the surf to assist my 8 year old if needed (strong swimmer we have a pool). This eased my anxiety and allowed me to enjoy as well.
Pack snacks as they give you a break and trust me you’ll want a little added fuel to finish strong.

I participated in this camp for 3 days (so, 3 two hour lessons) and I had so much fun and learned so much! Jessica, Alyssa, and Ellie were my instructors and their energy was so fun, and it was a pleasure to learn from them! They were extremely helpful and by the 3rd day I was easily catching waves by myself and standing up! I was really nervous at first but after doing these lessons makes me want to look into surfing as a possible new hobby, because it was so enjoyable. I recommend everyone use Sandbar if they are interested in learning how to surf!

SUCH a great experience. Both Jonny and Alyssa went above and beyond any expectations my group had. They were very lenient in accommodating our specific schedule, and I am so glad my group went with this company for our first surfing experience. As beginners we were naturally tentative, but we were instantly put at ease by the amazing instruction we received from Alyssa. We both got up on the board at the beginning of the lesson, and even though we fell every now and then, we never felt any negative pressure from Alyssa. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for surf lessons in Pismo!

Wonderful people at Sandbar Surf, including Jonny and 2 lovely ladies! This was our first time surfing and despite the water being freezing. brr! we had a great time learning how to ride the waves. The two female instructors were very helpful and gave great tips on paddling, catching the right wave, and getting up on the board. Johnny was there documenting the entire experience with his camera and even provided fresh water during a break. $ 60/​person for 2 hours is definitely a deal with wetsuit and board included. We are definitely planning to go back this summer and encourage anyone wanting to try surfing to hit up this company. You won’t be disappointed!

Can’t recommend more highly. Popped in for a first time surf lesson and it was fabulous. Even managed to stand up. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Great attitude. My daughter is hooked and I’d be happy to give it another go. We didn’t have any problems finding them — though it wasn’t crowded — and no problems booking a group lesson. If we come again we’d go back.

Had the most amazing time !!! $ 60 for a 2 hr lesson including wet suit and surf board Oh and you get a break with snacks and water provided ! You can’t beat that ! Best price I’ve seen! Water was a bit cold but you get used to it ! Terry was my instructor and he was great, he’s like your personal cheerleader and he gives you tips on what you did wrong so you can correct it the next time you go out ! With the help of Jonny and terry I was able to ride a wave ! I was beyond excited ! If I’m ever in the area again I will definitely book another 2 hr lesson with them ! And if your in town and want to take lessons this is the place to go

I booked a surf lesson for the kids (9 and 7) Spring Break. I only booked 1 lesson at first, because my attempts at at teaching them were complete disasters!
However they had a total blast, and wanted to book more lessons! They’re already asking if we can come back for Summer surf camp!
These guys are great teachers, the location is perfect, and they have a photographer taking pictures for a CD!!!
Great fun at a great price! Two thumbs up!

Great Pismo Beach surf lesson!
Checked availability by email then booked a Friday morning online. Instructor was Alyssa, who is an awesome! Hitting the cold water is daunting, but watching her leap into the ocean like a sea gazelle* you will jump in right after. (After getting wet the first time, didn’t feel cold again; wetsuit is plenty warm.) And even in a group lesson she had great feedback to get everyone riding the waves – after being told «plant your front foot sooner,» I nailed it consistently (until exhausted, then struggled again a bit).
Sandbar Surf has a two hour lesson with instructor and all gear provided. Two hours is a bargain, and plenty of time to get up, get the hang of it, and be completely tired before over. Did I mention surfing is a fair bit of work? Alyssa has lots of positive energy and kept everyone motivated and having a great time while working on their skills. One thing not mentioned on the Sandbar FAQ page to take with you is a tip for the awesome instructors!

Came here with my buddy from college and we had a great time. They were very accommodating as we called last minute to ask for lessons. I loved the energy of our instructor! Always encouraging and gave us good tips. It was my first time and his second time surfing and they were really good about easing us into surfing.
Finding the place was a bit of a trip. They actually operate out of a truck and it took us a second to find them in the parking lot. All in all a good time. It was a $ 60 lesson for 2 hours which included equipment. Way cheaper than going to Lake Tahoe and taking 2 hours of snowboarding lessons with equipment!

We booked a beach party with Sandbar Surf for our Boy Scout Troop during Spring Break. Very professional outfit! They had everything the Scouts needed to try Surfing, Boogie Boarding and just having fun on the beach. Instructors were very attentive to the group making sure everyone had a chance to learn the basics and stand up on the board. I highly recommend Sandbar Surf for a fun group activity on the beach at Pismo. We WILL be back!
