History

Established in 1926.

Our story began in 1926, so Shell Café is one of the oldest continually operating restaurants in the Pismo Beach area. In our Garden Room, you can see the original outside wall of the restaurant. The abalone and Pismo clam shells on the wall are over 70 years old. Beside the original restaurant was a small gasoline station. You will also notice the little cottages around the restaurant where guests use to stay. Some of these cottages are over 90 years old. We are renovating those cottages and will be recreating the life here as it used to be. You can also see the picture of the 1929 Motorcycle Rally, of which we were one of the original sponsors.

1351 Price Street is the old El Camino Real, the main road between northern and southern California. Our restaurant was the midway between Santa Barbara and Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Hollywood Celebrity friends of William Randolph Hearst found the restaurant a perfect place to relax and have a bite to eat.

Much has changed over the years.
