History

Established in 1986.

Lava Cap Winery was founded by the Jones Family on a cap of lava in the Sierra Foothills. The name of the winery is due to the cap which is a remnant of the volcanic activity in the Sierra mountains millions of years ago. Thomas Jones, the winemaker, completed his graduate studies in wine making at UC Davis, and he loves to handcraft supple, full bodied wines with notable fruit and smooth texture. Lava Cap wines are well known by the fruit forward style that Thomas creates from wine grapes grown in Lava Cap’s volcanic loamy soils. His brother Charlie Jones is the vineyard manager and oversees the 90 acre vineyard and estate. The Jones enjoy selling their wines directly in their active tasting room which is open daily to 5 p.m. Lava Cap wines are also available on the lavacap.com website and in many fine retail outlets.
