I have been coming to Plainfield Automotive for many years now. I love the friendly and professional service I receive from everyone. Most of all I know I can trust that I am getting the best deal and that I am getting what I truly need for my car and nothing else. Before coming to Plainfield Automotive, I always felt taken advantage of by other shops, not knowing much about the mechanics of my car. Tom the owner and very experienced mechanic, always takes the time to explain what needs to be done and always lets me know what future things I may need to have completed. I took my 2001 Honda Accord here because it would not start occasionally which was when the car was sitting outside in the heat.
They tested it and determined it was the fuel pump that needed to be replaced. Which cost me $ 540.00.
When I picked up the car the same thing was happening the mechanic told me the car just needed to relearn the idle. Over the next week the same thing was happening still. I decided to research this Honda Accord common problem with car not starting in the heat was the main relay. This would also show that there wasn’t any voltage going to the pump because the relay was bad. The part was changed for $ 45.00 and the car runs fine. I called Plainfield Automotive and spoke with Tony who was unwilling to do anything about this. He is sticking with the Pump being bad because no voltage was showing. I explained to him why it showed that. He said that the relay could go bad once the pump is changed. I googled this and found no such thing. Very disappointed in the service given there and the response. I’m not a mechanic at all and I was able to diagnosis the problem and they were unable to and charged for a part that was not needed.

Plainfield Automotive is a nice little place right on 59. First time I went, I was pleased with my experience. This week was not that great. 1. The receptionist and the two mechanics gave me different information. Mainly, my wheel bearing issue –mechanic #1 said that they were forced to change both (needs to be changed in pairs) and the other mechanic said that that is not true, one can be fixed without the other but in my case, they just happened to both be bad. Also, one of the mechanics said they replaced my breaks because of they were old and worn while the receptionist claimed this needed to be done because my bearings were so bad that is was causing my breaks to malform. 2. They ordered the wrong wheel bearing for my car so it took an extra day to fix. Sure, mistakes happen but not once did they apologize the the inconvenience — they had my car for 26 hours to fix something they said could be replaced in a couple hours. 3. They charged me $ 36 for diagnosis. I asked about this fee and the lead mechanic said that it was «for my knowledge» and he agreed with me that a $ 36 charge was necessary to confirm my original diagnosis. 4. Soon after talking about the $ 36 fee, the mechanic disagreed about a light on my dashboard claiming my wheels were put on incorrectly and there was nothing he could do about the ‘abs light.’ He continued to disagree with me when I insured him this was a low tire pressure gauge; it turned off when they filled up the air in the tires.
I don’t know much about cars but when you end up charging $ 950 dollars for a job that you originally predicted to be about $ 200 — you should be consistent and confident about the extra needed maintenance; moreover, giving inconsistent information makes it sound like you’re scamming them.
Most mechanics waive the diagnosis charge if you hire them to fix their car; these guys apparently still require it regardless — for their knowledge — even after their knowledge was incorrect about their dashboard light and their knowledge cost you two days of work because they had your car.
Don’t get me wrong, they are friendly and will talk to you if you ask questions but it not the experienced I was expecting from a shop like this

After months of having my «new» brakes I cringe and fume every time I have to brake at a stop light or the drive-​thru. After they had my car 2 days & replaced the brakes they squeak all the time! I called about the issue & I was told to drop off my car & they will take a look at it the next day. Well, that means I would be without a car for 3 days since they’re not open past 5 weekly or at all on weekends. Totally unacceptable. Not to mention I’ve moved an hour away. Next time I’ll go back to Midas where I took my other car and have had absolutely no problems. My husband said go here, the breaks are cheap. And that’s exactly what I got; cheap brakes.

Plainfield Automotive was advertising brake repair for $ 199. I needed my rear brakes replaced and I know the dealer would charge me about $ 400. I stopped in and told them to check my brakes. The mechanic told me my front brakes were still good but my rear brakes were metal to metal. He replaced the brakes and while he was test driving afterwards he found a badly worn control arm and ball joint assembly.
I had noticed a humming noise while driving about three weeks ago. I forgot to mention that to the mechanic. I am glad he noticed the problem. This could have been are real serious situation on the highway.
The total cost for the new brakes and the control arm assembly plus labor was $ 592.00. This is a very fair price. All the work was completed in about six hours. This is a family owned business with very friendly people. I will be back.

I would be careful going here, I left my car here because my front driver side brakes were grinding badly on my way to a wake across the street. My car needed a front brake job with a new caliper and rotor on the drivers side. I knew what It needed going in and left my car with them. This job is a brake job and should only be charged labor as such because you need to remove the Calipers to replace the pads. Changing the caliper at that point is removing 1 extra bolt that connects the brake line. They were going to charge an extra hour of labor to replace the caliper. I picked my car up and they charged $ 36 for inspection, I thought this was reasonable until I was told by the mechanic that he had not even removed the front wheel to inspect it. I would not go back and would not recommend. Nice person at the front counter was the only redeeming quality of the business.
