Cougar Books

This is my second semester to rent from this store and I’ve never had an issue here. In fact, I’ve never even had to look on their shelves for a book — I just go in with a paper that has the titles I need on it and the staff get it for me. They’ve always been polite and the whole thing’s painless.

I just got off the phone with Jennifer the manager and she was so helpful. I’m not sure why the reviews are so bad. She gave me all the info I needed and then even suggested that I rent. I will be stopping by the store tommorow to purchase. Until then I’m giving her customer service on the phone a rating of 5! I’m hoping my experience will be great when I visit the location. I will update yall.

I like this book store because they have really good prices. The staff members are helpful and helped me find all my books. The only complaint I have is they gave me the wrong book for one of my classes. And I also bought a book that was out of stock and they said they would call me when it gets there. They never did so I went to see if my book was there and it was. Sitting there for over a week. I would still come back here because the prices are really good.

Awfully rude female manager. She seems defensive or threatened as she speaks slightly too loud in an attempt to be assertive. Unfortunately she chose to stand by their deceptive return policies and have forever lost our business, even as I was ready to purchase the correct books after a few mistakes. Returns were not allowed since it was «the second week» of school at the point of attempted return. They are not associated with the school, but pretend to be. Refused to let me return an UNOPENED plastic wrapped book I had just purchased, so I am out 135 $ and they are out 1000’s of $ of my future business.

I will NEVER go back to this bookstore again! I had went in on a Friday (Feb, 21) for three books I needed to rent. I had the title of two of the books I needed, but for the third book I only had my class number and section. I asked the young guy who was helping me if they could find the book I needed by that information. He said yes and then got me the book. Well come find out he gave me the wrong book for a completely different course, same subject, but different course. No problem. So I went back in three days later (Today, Feb 24). I told the guy that I was given the wrong book and that I would like to return the book. (Keep in mind I JUST purchased this book 2 days prior). He was very polite and said that he could exchange the book for me. I said I didn’t want to do that, I just wanted to return it (I got the correct book elsewhere and for a lot cheaper!) I was very nice when saying all of this.
Once I said that, a lady behind me shouted at me saying, «It doesn’t matter that you just got it, you bought it and we don’t do any returns.» I was trying to reason with her saying that I spent a lot of money on this book and that the information they had for the courses was wrong so I have no need for the book. I just wanted my money back.
She continued to feel the need to raise her voice at me and start lecturing me. Not acceptable at all. Basically, and not in these words of course, she was telling me that I was stupid for not knowing the book I needed. And she kept saying the same things over and over.
No matter what I said she kept rudely interrupting me. Yes, I understand that I chose to purchase this book, needless to say I would not have had any need to return the book had their information been accurate or they could’ve at least been honest with me telling me that they weren’t sure if they could pinpoint the exact book I needed. OR they could’ve mentioned that there are no returns before I purchased a book that I wasn’t sure if it was the correct one. Then I could’ve waited until I was sure I had the right book.
It’s not even the fact that I couldn’t return the book nor that they sold me the wrong one. I would be fine with that. So I am out $ 60. It is that lady who has such a nerve to talk to ANYONE like that. I could feel the fire behind my eyes when I left. And after reading some of the other reviews on here I know it’s not just me experiencing this.
I won’t ever return to this bookstore solely because of that lady who has no intention of helping anyone. There are numerous ways to go about a situation like this and the way she chose was just about one of the worst ways possible.

I never found anything wrong with this store. I would walk in and they would ask me if I needed help but I knew what I was looking for so i didn’t need help. The people were nice and helpful. The only thing is that it’s just about always empty like of customer.

So I was reading the other reviews on here and feel the need, as an AVID Unilocaler, to share my opinion; buying books for college is never something you want to do, kind of like going to the dentist (which I also hate but recently left a shining review for, as well!). I think some people are primed to have a poor experience and are thus quick to pop off about it.
My experience:
I visited their sister store in Richardson and was informed by the staff there that Cougar Books had the books I was looking for in Plano. The Cougar Books manager offered to courier it over to the Richardson location for me so I could just pick it up there. They also let me rent it. I’m big on customer service (just read some of my other reviews!). I work in banking and hear about our tellers experiences constantly so maybe I’m just more sensitive to it but, if that’s not customer service, I don’t know what is.

I have always received nothing but stellar service at this bookstore. The only complaint I have is that it can get a little slow during the new semesters, due to the volume of traffic. This is the only bookstore I go to because not doing so, will result in the loss of my limbs due to using them as payment at the campus bookstore. Their prices are always very reasonable.

Just called this store to check on the book. Asked if they have Biology vol. 2 by Campbell. The girl asked me what is the name of the book that I am looking for, and I said Biology vol. 2 by Campbell. She said «no, this is the name of the class, what is the name of the book». What? I said again Biology vol 2 by Campbell, then I wanted to give her ISBN #, but she said that I can go to their website and hung up on me. Wow, what a customer service.

Worst bookstore i have ever been to. If I wasn’t a penniless, starving college student I would never step foot in this place again. But because I am and the only other option is the school bookstore at CCCC which sells books at ungodly prices, I will have to subject myself this awful service again next semester… not looking forward to it. So I visited this bookstore for the first time a few weeks ago, right after the spring semester began. I located one of the books i needed but was having trouble finding the other one. I walked up to the cash register, which was serviced by three young looking college students. One of them was occupied, helping out the customer before me. The other two were behind the counter, one of them chatting on the phone, the other one chewing her gum loudly while texting. Eager to be helped, I stared at them intently (I guess I could’ve gotten their attention a different way, but I wasn’t thinking at the moment). One of them, the girl gossiping on the phone, probably felt the heat of my stare and looked up. Without getting off the phone she asked if I needed help. I nodded sweetly and said, yes please, I have a question. She nodded back and then told the person (who turned out to be her dad) on the other line that she had to go. After attaining her full attention, I asked her if the book I needed was available. She looked at me blankly and then repeated my question to the guy next to her. He informed both of us that it was out of stock. Disappointed, I asked when it would be restocked. She looked at me blankly again. After a few seconds she said she didn’t know. Then right when I was about to ask her something again, she walked away from the counter and into the lobby area to groove unabashedly to a new song that started playing. I jus stared at her, mouth half open. Keep in mind, the store was somewhat busy, with costumers walking in and out the door. And she was right there in the lobby, just grooving.
After a few seconds, she realized I was not going to leave until I got my question answered and asked me if I still needed help. I said yes, but not so sweetly anymore. She came back to the counter and I asked her if she knew how much the out of stock book was, so I could compare it with the school bookstore. She said no, she didn’t know. I asked her if she could check on the computer. She said that wasn’t possible since she did not have the physical book so she could not scan the isbn on the book and would not be able to find the book in the system. Wow. What if I gave you the title of the book and the author’s name?, I asked. She shook her head and said sorry, I wouldn’t be able to find it. I have to admit, I was not very nice after that. I told her I was confused why it was impossible to find the cost of a book that they SELL. And then, you would not believe her audacity, she said well let me explain it to you, we don’t have the isbn so we cannot find the book because it is impossible to find books without the isbns. I think I had fire in my eyes at that point. The lady behind me, possibly the manager, looking very important, finally cut in our conversation and said oh, that book is $ 125 and I will order more tomorrow. THANK YOU, IMPORTANT LOOKING LADY. The first girl helped me rent my book and I was on my way home.
But it was NOT the end. The lady called me and asked if I could please come back and sign my rental paper. So I had to go all the way back to the bookstore because she was so unprofessional she forgot to ask me to fill out paperwork that would hold me accountable for the book I rented. I seriously considered just running away with the book and never ever returning to the place again.
