Dr Bob’s Handcrafted Ice Cream

I randomly found some pints of the ice cream in my grandparents fridge. and OH MY GOD amazing. Will be going to the store in person. Chocolate with scharffen berger Works is delicious.

I love dr bobs. The pumpkin and natulla are my favorites! !! I look forward to getting my fair ice cream every year. the pumpkin is so rich smooth and delicious. I have yet to try a dr bobs flavor that I didn’t like.

We had some of this amazing ice cream at I like Pie. Intrigued we went off on a hunt to the corporate store. I suppose it would of been faster to go to Wolfs Market in Claremont but this was a fun adventure.
We punched in the address to the GPS and drove up and down a few times before I hopped onto Unilocal and found Wendy’s review with awesome directions!
Enter in by Gate 1 by the child development center. Go through the guard gates, stick to the left then look out for the red barn to drive through then it’s a little more ways down by the cow barns.
Apparently the fair requested Dr. Bob’s to be there so that kids could experience the cow to cone experience and watch the cows getting milked and then getting to see ice cream being made. We didn’t get to actually see much being made but had a fun time talking to a mother daughter team who were super friendly and informative.
$ 5 a pint and they offer spoons. The mom told me there was some gardens nearby with greenspace nearby to run around in and some chickens and rabbits that we might be able to see as we had a toddler in tow

I sampled several of the flavors and loved every single one!
So rich and creamy, very decadent.
Tons of flavors, one better than the next, they range from your every day favorites to more unique ones loaded with different mix ins and a nice selection of sorbet for those wanting to avoid dairy.
Prices are great, this location sells to go boxes at $ 5 only, except for during the fair.

We just went to Dr. Bob’s ice cream to try some of their ice cream. The guard at the booth was nice and he gave us directions but it was still a little confusing. You have to drive to the other end of the fair grounds and the shop looks like it’s closed.
We were about to leave when a lady popped her head out and told us they were open. She says they are open all week long to sell pints for $ 5. They only sell scoops during the fair. She told us they also sell ice cream at the Cal State Pomona farmers market and a place in Upland.
The shop was a bit of a mess and they were busy preparing for the starwberry festival. They were out of the strawberry sour cream so we got strawberry. It was good and the lady who helped us was nice.

While this place is quite literally off the beaten and out of the way for most people, the ice cream is well worth making the journey for. Outside of LA, this is the best handcrafted artisinal ice cream one can find. Just know that this isn’t like your local Baskin Robbins where you get to buy a scoop and sample flavors. This is for take-​home pints, only. But at $ 5 a pint, I’m not even complaining.
The space is small, and found next to the barn area where the animals are kept during the LA County Fair, all the way at the back. To avoid getting lost, I think the easiest way is to put the address into your GPS, which will take you as far as the main gate on McKinley. From there, drive up to the guard post and ask them to tell you where it is. You basically just drive from there, all the way to the back to the farm area, make a left at the barn, and Dr. Bob’s will be on your right-​hand side. Just look for the sign, and make sure to park as close to the side as possible, away from oncoming worker trucks.
Walking in, one kind of feels like a trespasser as it’s more of a mini ice cream-​making factory than an ice cream shop, really. But don’t let that deter you. Outsiders ARE welcome. And this ice cream is well worth it. Just knock on the door and go right in.
They have a full list of delicious flavors that go beyond plain old chocolate & strawberry, (though they have those, too, including an intense chocolatey flavor called ‘Really Dark Chocolate’). We’re talking pints of deliciously creamy Espresso, with a kick, Cappuccino Crunch, which is slightly on the milder side, by comparison, due to the vanilla ice cream in it, Salted Toffee, Rum Raisin, Salted Caramel (amazing, by the way), Butterscotch Pecan, Coconut Pineapple, fruity flavors of every variety, the list goes on. And at only five bucks a pint, I think you can afford to go with your tried and true favorites, and try a little something new, as well.
While it says on Unilocal that it’s open 7 days a week, I went on a Sunday and it was closed, so to be safe, try stopping by on a weekday before 4:00.

Found this yummy place at the LA Fair and it totally beats any of the yucky soft serve you see throughout the fair.
Got the chocolate and raspberry. If I had known one scoop would be so HUGE, I would’ve just shared with my friend because we each got our own. Texture is nice a thick, smooth, and rich. Flavors were phenomenal and true to their name.
Like I always say, YOU WON’T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!

News Flash. You do not have to wait until the LA County Fair is in session! Their tiny little store, on Fairplex grounds, stays open year round. Simply drive up to the guard shack at the western entrance, then drive to the opposite side of the fairgrounds next to the red barn where they keep all the animals.
And don’t be disappointed. It is not a glamorous ice cream shop (but maybe it is during the Fair), merely a place to pick up cartons of that smoother than smooth, deep flavored and not too sweet, high butterfat ice cream that has driven us locals to insanity. My favorite? The Works. Might I add for my dear chocoholics, their intense chocolate flavors are from Scharffen Berger in Oakland, yet another forehead slapping experience.
They are open during regular business hours, and you can only buy pints, no scoops in cones or cups, but they do supply spoons for those who want to live dangerously.
If you want to know of their other distributor’s locations, go to their website. I know that Cal Poly Pomona Farmer’s Market, a cute little gourmet store on campus, is a good place to start. But I suspect the prices are better here, we paid $ 5 per carton.
Now, about the ice cream. Yup… It’s the best!

I actually found this place because of LA Fair. I was craving ice cream but I didn’t want a giant cone or something that looks like its going to melt in 5.4.3.2…aww man.
We came across Dr. Bob’s ice cream and everything looks so fresh and clean. There was a long line when I was there but I didn’t care much. There are 6 main flavors at that time. I ended up with the «coolest» name, which was the capaccino crunch. Oh man, the ice cream was so creamy. The coffee flavor was strong and it has tiny crunch of coffee beans in it. It was not overly sweet which was nice.
The thing that I was disappointed in was the price. Yeah I know it was homemade, but the cup that was given to me was a small drinking size styrofoam cup and that was $ 4. Thrifty ice cream is $ 5 that gives out maybe 20 of those cups.
Because of the price, I don’t think il come back on own, unless someone wants to go.

The ice cream was really yummy! I only tried samples which were great. One of my friends got a cone and they said it was delicious. I didn’t actually buy anything and I’m not sure how much my friend paid. The interior is a bit small though, but it has cool decorations.

I had a 3 scoop waffle cone and this was one of the best ice creams I’ve had in a long time. The Nutella flavor ice cream is a must.

Encountered this place at the la county fair today. I was in search of healthy snack food and found this place had a strawberry sorbet, some sherbet flavor and this cranberry ice cream. It was so smooth, creamy and it had a rich cranberry flavor with pieces of cranberry throughout. It was sweet and not bitter. I thought it was worth a drive on another day.

Dr. Bob’s ice cream is definitely a really good ice cream. Dr. Bob is actually a professor at Cal Poly Pomona (with a doctorate) by the way. But anyways, I have had the pleasure of trying 3 of the following flavors:
Scharffen Berger Dark Chocolate– This was my first taste of Dr. Bob’s and I was quite disappointed. It was pretty bitter and tasted brunt. Really not what I would have expected of a dark chocolate ice cream to taste like. I purchased a pint of this at Cal Poly Pomona’s Farm Store ($ 6.39). Because of my dissatisfaction for this ice cream, Dr. Bob himself actually refunded my money, which was awesome!
Strawberries with Sour Cream & Brown Sugar– I tried this ice cream at an event and loved it so much that I purchased a pint at the Farm Store in Pomona ($ 6.39). This ice cream has a nice creamy flavor and the bits of brown sugar here and there really add something to this ice cream.
Tahitian Vanilla– I tried this ice cream at an event as well and really liked the authentic traditional vanilla flavor. Nothing boring with this vanilla.
Dr. Bob’s ice cream flavors are quite inventive and delicious (well not the dark chocolate flavor for me though). You can find Dr. Bob’s at a few local super markets and of course at the Farm Store on Cal Poly Pomona’s campus. And during the summer time, you may even be able to get a scoop at the LA County Fair. But the prices are a bit steep, but still worth trying at least once.

I have never had ice cream better than this in my life. NEVER! I have looked and looked for ice cream better than this or even as good as this. It doesnt exist. Not even in Washington and Oregon with the best dairy farms on earth and the greatest artisans of all things creamy and cheesy haven’t make an ice cream this good.

Most delicious ice cream I’ve ever tasted. Wasn’t easy to find, but it definitely lived up to the reviews.

Mom went to Cal Poly’s farmers market today and bought a pint of ice cream home.
First thing I said to my mom:
Me: «I’ve never heard of this brand before!!» «It probably isn’t good…»
Dad: «I’ve heard of this brand! It’s in Pomona»
Well thanks dad. You just showed me up. But that’s who got me interested in food so I’m not surprised.
She bought the peppermint ice cream flavor. Personally I don’t like peppermint flavor that much…
BUT OMG. This ice cream was sooooooooooooo creamy. On a scale of 1 – 10, it was a 12. Seriously my taste buds.
Best ice cream I’ve ever had. Better than haagen dazs. That’s saying a lot.

Excellent Ice cream!
Tried both the vanilla and the caramel, both were excellent!

These guys were doing some pretty good business when we walked in. Of course, it was a bazillion degrees outside, and nothing sounds as blessedly wonderful as ice cream on a day that you’re sweating your balls off standing in the shade.
They had a decent selection of flavors, but the second I saw the «Root Beer Float» line on their menu, I stopped looking at the flavors. The friends that we were there with each got a scoop of the raspberry and the strawberry, and my husband and I each got a root beer float.
I wish we would have shared a float, instead of getting one a piece. Had I known that they give you three scoops and a full can of root beer (not A&W, but nobody’s perfect…), I would have insisted on sharing. As it was, we ended up with too much ice cream and soda to finish on our own, and ended up having to throw away what we couldn’t finish.
Their vanilla ice cream (the base of the float) was very good. It was smooth and creamy, and it tasted fresh and wasn’t overpoweringly sweet. It was perfect for the floats, and when it mixed in with the root beer, made for a very nice, creamy dessert.
I’d definitely go back to try their other flavors, if it were in my neighborhood. You can’t ever go wrong with a nice, homemade ice cream.

My fiancé lives for Dr. Bob’s ice cream. He, a lover of vanilla ice cream, lives and dies for Dr. Bob’s vanilla bean ice cream. He looks forward to the LA County Fair just for this. I, on the other hand, have always been a «the more stuff you can put in ice cream, the better» and never really understood his love of vanilla ice cream. That is, until I had a tiny bite of Dr. Bob’s. It’s decadent and luscious in it’s pure form. The cream is beyond creamy. I had a kid’s cone of fresh peach and couldn’t finish it. It’s so luscious that the milk solids just coats the inside of my mouth.

Wow… one of the best tasting ice creams that I have ever had…
Their Dark Chocolate is one of creamiest tasting ever, I’m guessing it has to do with the high concentration of butter fat that they use…
They also have some interesting flavors too… like Blood Orange… really tangy…
Bad news is that this location is usually only open during the LA County Fair… it’s adjacent to the Big Red Barn past the Mexican Village in the fairgrounds.
I also found out today that they have a booth (sort of) in the wine tasting pavilion of the LA County Fair that offers some additional flavors as well…
You can also buy Dr. Bob’s ice cream at certain supermarkets like Wolfe’s in Claremont…
I heard one reviewer say that Dr. Bob’s is being served at Twohey’s in Alhambra…
So as you can see, getting Dr. Bob’s on a regular basis can be somewhat of a challenge, but not impossible, and would be totally worth the effort…
