Serious old-fashioned fun! This was a cool event! Extremely well planned and put together. My five-year-old daughter and I had a blast here! It was so much fun to show her and see for myself the simplicity of life in the 1800s and she loved it! The food was wonderful at the booths they had set up. One thing she really enjoyed was seeing some of the cars that they had for display that day from the early 1900s. She also enjoyed seeing the games that the children used to play and she got to try one of her first pieces of fresh cut sugarcane that they grow their themselves. We learned about loom weaving and there was even a pottery demonstration set up where the children could actually make their own pottery on the wheel! I thought that was one of the coolest things! We even got to grind our own corn between two huge rocks to use for cornbread. My daughter now thinks that we should make cornbread this way every single time. Lol. I personally loved the cooking demonstrations and trying some goodies from the past. The bathroom was super clean and even had an attendant to keep it that way! So much better than other festivals! We stayed almost until the very end of the event dancing to some of the wonderful Cajun/zydeco bands. Coming back next year is a certainty and I can’t wait to see if they do something for Christmas as well! This was just a really really unique place!

Experience living history, where the past meets the present. This was in celebration of the annual sugar cane harvest that made for a sweet time for all that attended. It was set at the West Baton Rouge Museum in Port Allen, LA. With lush greenery, beautiful trees and a huge open space, it made the perfect spot for this huge community festival. Of all the years I lived in West Baton Rouge and now East Baton Rouge, I have never been to this event and I could hardly believe it! It was so much fun and was the perfect way to step back into history and get a taste of how life was back then. There were multiple demonstrations showcasing various artisans and crafters, local food vendors, historical home tours, live performers, open hearth cooking, dancing, a sweets contest, live animals and so much more. This year marked the 20th annual SugarFest, so it made it all the more special. Make sure you tune into all that The West Baton Rouge has to offer all year round.

The weather wasn’t perfect but the history was still alive. Good, family outing on a Sunday afternoon learning about our Southern Heritage at a Sugar Cane Farm. Ate some good BBQ, saw demonstrations in woodworking, blacksmith, fishnetting, making Cane Syrup and more! First time knowing about this event and loved learning and living through history. Thankful for the men and women who made this event come to life!!! Definitely a MUST every year.
