Michael L.

Business Owner

Michael has been roasting coffee for over 30 years. He began in Brooklyn, NY and has owned cafes and restaurants in Vermont, Rhode Island, California and now in Port Townsend where he is raising his three children. His oldest daughter, Sadie, has worked for the café since it opened in May 2009.

Michael has a passion for roasting the finest organic, fair trade coffee blends and has received rave reviews from locals and tourists alike. It is not uncommon for a customer to remark, «This is the best cup of coffee I have had in years.»

Michael loves the café culture and enjoys having people who want to come and enjoy a great conversation with friends over a great cup of coffee or who want to come work on their laptops and take advantage of being out in the community.

This is a lovely coffee shop. It’s definitely a great experience to have a delicious meal looking outside of the window to a beautiful view of the ocean.
This place has a good number of seats, that range from tables to couches.
The menu is all pre-​made, meaning there is nothing that they have to cook when you order. You can choose between delicious savory quiches, pastries, and so on. They also have a very nice selection of coffees. Make sure to order one of their drip coffees.
I tried their Lorraine quiche with a salad and it was very tasty. The drip coffee is quite strong and powerful — just perfect.
This is a great option for brunch or breakfast.

Granted, my husband and I are not hipsters. And granted, we aren’t covered in North Face gear and carrying our own personalized coffee paraphernalia. So I suppose, right I away, we were marked as some form of life lower than human, and were treated accordingly. When we asked what the wi-​fi passcode was, the server basically grunted and jabbed his thumb at a sign on the register which was NOT obvious to myself nor my husband. He got coffee, I got tea, and we did very much enjoy the view. But the service was horrible, and seemed to be «typical Port Townsend». If you’re from out of town and don’t have on all the hipster/​local gear, prepare to be treated like you’re annoying gum on the bottom of someone’s shoe. So sad the people living in this beautiful landscape have such sour, snide attitudes!

The BEST coffee I’ve ever had. And as a really delightful bonus, the best quiche and side salad. All local, Organic, and delicious! The crust and the cheese they use for the quiche are SO good! The dressing and fresh ingredients in the salad are the perfect pairing to the quiche. We’ve been back numerous times, I actually crave it! I see alot of complaints about the staff but we’ve always had a nice experience here. These people believe in their wholesome ingredients and it shows. Nothing fake. All fresh. All local. All organic. Outstanding!

After a long day, and a hard afternoon crash, we wandered in here, hoping for some good coffee. We left, however, after getting a cup of coffee, two cups of tea, house made chai, a spinach and cheddar swirl, and a piece of fig and walnut pie. As it turns out, everything this place makes is magic. We just couldn’t stop buying things! The staff, the view, the food, the drinks… everything is down to earth and relaxed.
Be sure to make a stop here!

This is the happenin’ place in PT. Busy on a Sunday at 2pm. Large portions and delicious food will keep me coming back. I had the Café Arancia which is coffee with orange and chocolate (I think it beats out Cognac), a yogurt parfait that was served in an easy-​to-​devour bowl and a slice of a walnut-​fig tart.
The only bad part is that now I’m too full to come back for dinner.

Great relaxing vibe to the café. Beautiful view of the waterfront. The staff is friendly & fast and the Apple Pie is amazeballs #fact. Try the lentil soup too! Only downside is limited menu options.

If you want a really good cup of strong black coffee, this is the place for you. Have the Pantomime, amazing taste and body. Try the figgies (homemade fig bar), good with the coffee.
The apple pie with whip cream is equally as good, one of my favorites! Many things to choose from.
Great atmosphere and lovely view to sit and watch the waves or the ferry come and go on stormy or sunny days.
I come in here often and I am never disappointed!

Their café arancia and café vienois are both some of the best coffee drinks I’ve ever had. Smooth, not to sweet, and with complex and wonderful flavors, it’s a treat to stop by here every time I’m in Port Townsend.
Their baked goods are tasty to, though a bit on the higher price side. Still, the portions are hearty.
Overall quite a nice experience.

Eh. Appreciate the organic, eco-​friendly ethics of this place (but seeing as most places are trending that way in WA, I expected better).
$ 17 for a bagel dog, 2 small iced coffees and 1 tiny rugelach. Meh. We left and were still hangry. When they asked, I placed my order «for here» as most places will serve the food on a plate, but put coffee in a to-​go cup (I always count on taking it with me) and instead they put my iced coffee (with 5 melted ice cubes) in a glass. Had to awkwardly ask for a to-​go cup and more ice. While I realize this is a environmentally friendly place, they made it uncomfortable. Staff wasn’t friendly when taking my order or when I went to the counter to pick it up. All of these sound like such first-​world problems, but I’ve experienced much better and paid much less from similar coffee shops.
Would find a different coffee shop in Port Townsend.

Okay… So while I was in Port Townsend I came across this great coffee and tea place. Better living through coffee was not as relevant to me but I did find better living through their tea! I ordered the jasmine and it was good. It is a cute little place on the edge of the water with some sofas to relax.
I’d defiantly return.

Great coffee shop! Such an amazing view as it sits right on the water. If it’s a sunny day it’s a great place to watch the sail boats and canoes go by. Very close to the fairy so if you’re coming off of that it’s a nice stop as you head into town.
In terms of the actual food and drinks:
They have a great selection of food. From the quiches and soups to the cookies and cheesecake, it’s all great!
The drinks are also good with 6 different types of drip coffee and your other typical espresso drinks. They even have different types of organic sugar-​evaporated and dehydrated (call me ignorant, but I had never thought of the two options). They only warning with the drinks is they only have 2% or other whole organic options.

A bit off the beaten path, but well worth finding, especially if you get there early and grab one of the tables next to the windows that look out over the water. This cosy, well-​worn meeting of hippie and hipster is sort of what Starbucks would be if Starbucks had a soul.
They feature locally roasted coffee, prepared in the standard barista espresso-​based creations, along with drip coffee brewed by the cup. You can also buy their fair trade coffee in bulk.
But it’s ;not just a coffee place. They have a fairly extensive breakfast and lunch menu with everything from bratwurst to frittatas to scones to clam chowder. They feature sustainable, organic, locally produced/​prepared/​caught foods.
Everything I’ve tried here has been very good. The service is personable and efficient. Free WiFi. It’s also a good place for kids, so expect to hear a bit of kid noise sometimes. I was going to give these guys four stars, but I just re-​read my review and can’t think of a good reason not to go with five.

In search of coffee after an early drive into Port Townsend, this place was a gem to find on a cold morning. Comfy seating, delicious coffee, and a beautiful view of the water as you sip away!
I bought a pound of coffee to take home for only $ 13. (They’ll also grind it for you if you ask!) The service is really personalized — our cashier made it a point to use our names while we ordered and paid for our coffees.
If I lived here, this place would quickly become a part of my morning routine. Whether it’s to grab a quick cup of joe on a weekday, or on a more leisurely Sunday when I have time to lounge and enjoy the view.
If you’re visiting, this is a spot you must see! The bags of coffee are also perfect gifts and smell SO good! You can’t go wrong when it’s locally roasted.
