Nut Just Lube

As good as it gets! I have been coming here for years now and always receive great service and fair pricing. Moe is the owner, but the other guys act like owner’s too. They know what they are doing and don’t look to unnecessary work if it can be avoided. I recommend you give them a try, you’ll be happy you did.

This is about the Nut Just Lube in New Hyde Park. They are wonderful! The owner and others are all highly professional and generous with their time and expertise. I give them the highest of recommendations.

Moe is as honest as they come, and always a pleasure to deal with. His staff is efficient and knowledgable, and always give you a heads-​up on what servicing they recommend — and not necessarily that very moment, but also what should be addressed after X number of miles, or before the winter, etc. While there may be certain circumstances for which bringing your car to a dealership is important or otherwise makes sense, if you want great and honest service at a fair price and not have to arrange your life around it, Nut Just Lube is the place to go.

I brought my car in for a state inspection and was told I needed a new tire and brake pads before it could pass. I was quoted a very high price, so I left and went to another inspection station. The mechanic there said my tire and brakes were fine. I paid $ 37 fee for the inspection and was given my sticker.

I have not been at this establishment since 2010 after they screwed me over few times until I wised up.
(1) One of my cars is a Japanese make that requires 5w-​20 motor oil. They charged me $ 5 more than their listed price because they used 5w-​20 grade motor oil. When I asked about why, they said it’s specialty grade oil, but it’s common as other grades in auto parts stores.
(2) Same Japanese make car was brought in for oil change before a trip out of town. I made the mistake of telling Moe that I planned a trip on the car and asked him to look the car over. I get a call an hour later saying that I needed a new front brake pads. But, the car only had 45K miles on and asked him if it is usual for such low mileage car to get a new pad. He said pad has plenty of life left, however, there is a crack in the pad and it would be a safety hazard to drive, especially long distances. Since I was planning to leave that evening, I authorized the repair at $ 230 but have reservations about whether the repair was really needed.
(3) Brought in the same car for battery replacement when it died in middle of winter. About 8 months after the battery replacement, I noticed that the acid was leaking from the battery and brought it back to have it replaced under warranty, which I was told would be 2 year free replacement. Moe said the battery is «sweating» because of summer heat. I told him I never heard of such a thing but he said just wiping it down is all that is required. He had one of the guys working wipe the battery down with water and rag and sent me off. Two months later, I was stranded on the side of busy highway out of town (with two young kids) with a failed battery. Battery was not holding any charge and could not be jumped. Tow and new battery ended up costing me $ 300 because Moe would not honor the replacement warranty and instead gave me bunch of BS.
(4) Took my BMW for annual inspection. Moe tells me I needed to replace rear brakes, otherwise I would not pass inspection. So I authorized the repair. After brakes are complete, he tells me it’s going to be $ 500. I told him he charged me $ 230 few months back for my other car and his response is «it’s a BMW».
Three months later, I get warning lights on my dash that my rear brakes need attention immediately. By this time, I had wised up and took the car to a real mechanic. After looking at the brakes, he asks if I have any enemies, jokingly. Brake sensor wire is hanging loose from the brake pads. Apparently, Nut Just Lube did not install the wire properly! The correct way with these wires is to replace the wiring harness with a new one that costs about $ 25 but Nut had used old wires and it fell off, sending alarm to the car that brakes had gone. To the Nut’s credit, I was told they installed quality pads so the mechanic I had gone to replaced the brake sensor wiring and charged me $ 50. The mechanic asked if I got pad warning light when I was told I needed a new brake pads, which I did not. I then asked the mechanic if BMW pads are that much more expensive and he told me depending on quality, they could be anywhere between $ 25 to about $ 100 but something in $ 50 range for the pads would be more than adequate for day to day driving. After taking $ 500 for repairs that may not have been needed, Moe did not have decency to replace $ 25 part and charged double, just because it’s BMW, just like when he charged premium for a 5w-​20 oil.
To this day, every time I pass Nut Just Lube, I wonder when people would wise up and let this place go out of business.

This seems to be the only honest mechanic shop on Long Island. This place services both my car and my wife’s, and on several occasions, I have brought the cars in before long trips to have a safety check and oil change done, and unlike any other mechanic, they give the car back and tell you nothing is wrong.
If the brake pads are ¾ fresh, they will tell you, instead of trying to sell you new brake pads. This place also does more than just the usual service. They recently replaced the locking mechanism on my wife’s car door (for free) as well as a windshield washer reservoir.

I drive about 3000 miles per month and for many years, Moe at Nut Just Lube has been doing my repairs, inspections, new batteries, and especially oil changes. His oil change includes filter, lube, fluid top-​off, vacuum, etc. at the same high-​speed as the quickie-​lube places, but they can do full automotive repairs and batteries, inspections, etc. There’s a discount coupon on his web site. He’s got a comfortable waiting area with couches, cable tv and free wi-​fi. I bring my car to them whenever I hear anything funny in my car, because I know if there’s nothing wrong with it, they’ll tell me – they are honest and trustworthy.
