I recently purchased a home built in 1976 that was blessed enough to still have the melted chocolate ice cream brown bathtub. I hired Allen Co to refinish and almost 2 months later, I still couldn’t be happier with the end result. We asked for white, but what the owner did was match the white to the white that best matched my new toilet so both the toilet and the tub look like the perfect set.
He pointed out some tile edging that was installed (probably during a botched remodel) that, when removed, will cause some damage to the tub. He offered to come back to fix it for free when we decide to remove the tile.
He also offered to come back at any point if we weren’t happy with the work.
Last comment, a couple of people on here said his communication could use some work. In my experience, it was just fine. I emailed via the website late on a Sunday evening and he responded that night. I also had no problem reaching him via phone.
The refinishing made our bathroom look new. So happy with the work he did. Great experience all around.

We wanted to hire an owner-​operated, green-​friendly company and we’re happy to find Jeff! He was responsive, affordable (other quotes were at least 200 $more), and did a superb job refinishing our tub. He offers a five year warranty and we feel confident the work will last if we follow his very detailed and helpful care instructions.

We used this company to refinish a few bathtubs in multiple different properties that we manage and all of these jobs were done very professionally. One of the last jobs that was completed was done improperly and the owner of Allen Co. stated he would go back out and take care of this problem. He went back out and blamed the issue on a faulty tub surround. We sent out three different vendors to bid on replacing the tub surround and all three vendors stated that the tub surround was in perfect shape and that the tub refinishing was done improperly. After this was brought to Allen Co’s owners attention he completely disappeared. Doesn’t respond to emails or phone calls. This has been going on for over six months now. This is very bad business and we would never recommend this company to anyone.

I’m with the review from Josh. The guy is a big talker but doesn’t walk his talk. Don’t use him. Did a tub for me and called to say it was coming up, he told me he had time on Thursday. Never heard from him. I called several times with no response. VERY LAME!

Two years ago, Allen Co. of Portland refinished my 70-​year old cast-​iron bathtub and did a great job. I was very happy with their work and experienced no problems, until a couple of months ago, when I noticed that the finish was beginning to peel and bubble in several spots. So, knowing that their work was guaranteed for five years, I called and spoke directly with the owner, Jeff Scholtens. We immediately set up an appointment for him to come and make the repairs. He was responsive, cordial and very apologetic. He met me at my house, and applied a new coating, which looked great. After cautioning me not to use if till it dried, a minimum of 24 hours, he cleaned up and left and I was very pleased. It was then that the problem began.
Within the next four hours, before it even finished drying, the new finish began to bubble and peel. The tub now looked far worse than it did before he came to make the repairs. I called Jeff the next morning, and texted him photos of the new bubbles and problem areas. Again, he was cordial and extremely apologetic. He said he had to order some other materials but he promised me would be in touch in a couple of days. In the meantime, he said that if the tub had finished drying, (which it had) I was to go ahead and use it (it’s the only tub/​shower I have in the house). His goal, he stated repeatedly, was to make sure I was pleased with their work.
A week went by with no call-​back, so I called him again. He told me that he had still not received the materials he needed but that he would call me when he did. Over the next two weeks, I called multiple times, left several message and never got another response. The one time I did reach him on the phone, he said that the company had sent him the wrong materials and that he would call me when he got the right materials. Last week, I left him yet another message asking him to call me back. I reminded him that it had been a month of this back-​and-​forth. If he didn’t intend to honor his warranty and repair my tub, I asked that he be candid with me, so that I could make other arrangements to repair the damage he’d caused.
This company does not honor their work and I would warn anybody who is considering using them, to proceed with caution.
Also, the instructions he left for care of the tub, when the work was first done two years ago, are not as clear as they could be. The instructions indicate that 409 cleaning solution was ok to use, but to not use anything with bleach in it. A diluted vinegar solution is also an acceptable cleaning method. I used 409 once but it didn’t work well at all. So, after that, whenever I cleaned my tub I used the vinegar solution, and it worked very well. When Jeff came to do the repairs the first time, he told me that some 409 products have bleach in them, which I thought should have been made clear in the instructions, but since I only used it once. I don’t think it was the cause of the problems. Be forewarned.
UPDATE TWO WEEKS LATER: I had to call in another vendor who did a great job of repairing the botched work of Allen Co., at twice the cost. I’ve yet to hear back from Allen Company.

Jeff Scholtens, owner of Allen Co., was great from my first email inquiring about his service all the way through to completion of my bathroom project. I was kind of stumped as to what to do about my pink tub and tile in my, 1955 Foster-​Powell, ranch home. A complete renovation with a new tub and tile was out of the question for financial reasons, so resurfacing was a great alternative. I am very pleased with how the project turned out. It’s like getting a whole new bathroom in one day. Jeff was very clean and good about communication. If your tub/​tile are still in good shape but you hate the color, this is the WAY to go.

I chose to go with Allen Co based on positive reviews and that they use the greenest products available, which was important as there is a child in the house. Excellent communication, super speedy scheduling and outstanding work. We slightly damaged the refinishing (we had a slow drip which we were unaware of) and he offered to fix it at no cost because he wants his work to be perfect. Couldn’t be happier, plus I feel good supporting a local family merchant!

Read the reviews here and called owner for an estimate. He never showed. I had to call twice before two hours later he finally returned my call to say he had double-​booked himself and was at an appointment. Finally showed up. That was two weeks ago and I never heard another word from him for the estimate. I finally called him today and he said he was no longer accepting new business since he had to leave town for a month for family issue. Huh? Could he at least have called ME? This is a $ 2000 – 3000. job, btw. Seems nice but TERRIBLE communication. No respect for my time at all.

We had great communication with Jeff and he was very timely with start and finish of the job. He came back the second day to put a non-​skid surface on the tub and fixed a minor issue from the day before. He was very professional, kind and very skilled at what he does. I would highly recommend him and would use him again!

We hired Jeff to resurface our daughter’s old porcelain bathtub. We live in Michigan and were coming out for Christmas so made all the arrangements by phone. I can’t tell you how happy we are with the work he did. The tub looks brand new and believe me, before it was a mess. Everything happy just as Jeff promised. He showed up on our prearranged date at the exact prearranged time. His work was neat, timely, didn’t leave a toxic ordor. In fact, one reason we chose him over others is that we did not need to evacuate ourselves or the pets while he worked. Our tub was extremely pitted, so Jeff advised we wait another day to use the tub because he had a thicker coating on it. He came back the next morning to inspect his work and make sure everything was right. We would definitely use him again. He is not a franchised outfit.

I read the reviews prior to hiring Allen Co to refinish my bathtub but after talking with the owner I thought he would get the job done. Two weeks ago I scheduled to have the work done yesterday morning. He called very early stated he cut his hand loading his truck and needed to go to the hospital but would reschedule for later in the day or today. Later in the afternoon I called to check on the status and he rescheduled the refinishing to this morning at 9:30am. After he didn’t show I called him at 10:30 and wound up leaving a voice mail. Have never heard back.
Buyer beware, go with someone else.

Jeff was great! We had a tub that had been flaking with multiple layers of old sealant on it and was disgusting. It was in a terrible condition the last 8 years since we bought our house and just never had it high up enough on the priority list to pay to repair it. So finally this year we did it and couldn’t believe how reasonably priced he was (even after discovering our tub had an extra hard old veneer on it so requiring special ordering of a stripping chemical). He still kept with the same quote as he gave me over the phone even after he came and saw it was a bigger project than he thought it would be.
The end result was beautiful and a great price! Also super nice guy. I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or a backhanded complement but he really is a real life Ned Flanders! I swear that guy has his picture in the dictionary under sweet and honest. I’d recommend him without hesitation! My toddler can FINALLY take a real bath in the bathtub now!

Jeff refinished our 1888 clawfoot tub, turning it into a work of art. Since we didn’t have room in our tiny bathroom to have him refinish it there, we dropped it off to his place to have him do it in his shop. He had it done sooner than expected but we weren’t ready for it, so he was nice enough to hang onto it. The only reason I’m giving four and not five stars is that there was a bit of a communication gap when it came time to get the tub back again. Jeff was working out of town and there was no way to get it until he returned. He made up for it though by helping deliver it and touching it up once it was in place. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely go back to Jeff to have him refinish anything for us. Excellent work and a very positive guy.
