After many projects with AEI (Whit), I’ve never been disappointed with the results.
My business cards are amazing. The website designs he provides never disappoint me or my clients. Even the PSDs I receive have been organized with intuitive layers, and this simplifies handoff process. AEI’s rates are where they should be for the quality work and service provided. I had a GREAT experience with Angled End Identities, specifically Whit, when he was in San Francisco. We were both getting ready to leave the Bay Area, and I was about to branch out with my own company name in a new market in Central California. We ended up doing the logo design in person, and the website over the phone. It was surprisingly easy to finalize everything even without being in the same town. I was pretty scared about making an expensive mistake, but Whit was a steady, knowledgeable guide throughout the entire process.
I’m a chiropractor, and wanted to creatively differentiate myself, but remain professional and healthcare-​oriented. Not as easy as it sounds! I had already decided on company name, and an idea of what I wanted to use as a logo, but trust me, I’m no graphic artist! I described to Whit what I was visualizing. More than anything, he LISTENED to my concerns and thoughts. When he came back with about 25 (yes, that many!) rough sketches of a logo, it was hard to choose because there were so many cool choices! It was great because it made me pare down and focus on exactly what I wanted to convey. I think the part that took the most time was choosing just the right colors.
The whole experience was so fun and creative, and I’ve been so happy and proud to hand out my business cards! Sounds dopey but I am truly excited about my logo. Finalizing the website was actually pretty easy, and I’d really been dreading it. Nothing worse than having to «brag» about yourself (aka marketing) but Whit once again smoothly guided me through the process. I can say I’m really pleased with the website, and can direct people to it without worrying that it looks cheesy or is glitchy. I’ve had nothing but compliments about my logo/​business cards. Even the Yellow Pages rep was impressed with it, and made sure that it was the focal point of my advertisements (yes, people still use the Yellow Pages down here! Hilarious).

I find Emma’s review to be baffling and mean-​spirited. But then again, I usually don’t trust a «rant» like hers in Unilocal reviews… in my experience there’s usually a lot more to the story. When considering AEI for my design services, I looked at all the 5-​star Unilocal reviews for the company… now I see they are hidden. Must be Unilocal’s bizarre algorithm that periodically deletes reviews? That’s a real shame, because AEI is a top notch business. I run a rapidly growing business in San Francisco and during the first few years of our start up phase I worked with a multitude of designers. I found myself consistently frustrated and disappointed with the work ethic, talent and lack of ability to to deliver a solid and quality product.
It’s been a joy and a relief to work with Whit of Angled End. I’ve found him to be exceptionally clear in his communication and in his desire to understand the underlying message behind a design. He’s a little more expensive than other designers but that is more than made up for by his speed and expertise in delivering a high quality product. Personally, I feel like I’m saving money because he has always produced beautiful work quickly that that I don’t think I could get by paying other designers for the extra time it takes them to deliver something that in the end ranks only as ‘acceptable’.
I appreciate Whit’s calm, professional and personal demeanor. He’s a team player and can think creatively which I have found to be a critical component in creating the best end result. (I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have to creatively babysit other designers who can’t seem to think outside of the box!) Whit gets it!

I recently used Angled End and was very impressed by their professionalism and knowledge. I have already referred friends to Angled End.

I am a business owner who maintains the company’s websites. As my skill level is adequate, I am constantly looking for expert help to guide me to make my site better and better. When I met Whit and started using him as the role of «mentor», I felt incredibly blessed. I can easily say that without his help and guidance, my websites would not be as half as attractive as they are.
But its more than his skill that I appreciate… it is the way that he teaches and the support he offers. I know that at any moment, I can ask a question and get a solid reply or a push in the right direction. He is consistant, available, bills fairly, and is a pleasure ot work with.
Beyond, that his graphic skills are amazing.

DISASTEROUS is the only word I can use to describe my experience with Whit and Angled End Identities. Initially things were going quite well, his brief was to simplify our logo for use on marketing materials such as bumper stickers. Things started to get tricky when Whit wanted to change the font we use, my business is small and I am not in a position to do that at the moment, he wouldn’t accept this as an argument. He wanted his design to be a different general shape from the one we already have and he wanted to use different colors to the ones we already use despite us asking for the design to be recognizable as ours and being told that was not what we want (the reason I employed someone to do this job was because I knew it would be tricky). He did not understand what I was asking for and was so entrenched in his position that he wouldn’t hear what I had to say. His work is nowhere near close to what we were looking for and was getting close to the top end of his estimate when I realized that he could carry on sending me awful work indefinitely which I would be expected to pay for (it was the hourly rate trap!), especially since he used «this work is inherently subjective» as an argument. My business is too small to be able to afford that kind of risk and I didn’t trust that we were going to ever go in the right direction as he had argued every point with me and been rather unpleasant in the process.
Whit has been patronizing, rude, arrogant, difficult, unable to accept criticism, unpleasant, unreasonable. He is now accusing me of cheating him, twisting the truth, not communicating effectively: apparently the information I sent falls short of what he required in order to be able to do a good job, essentially I deserve the shoddy work I got because I didn’t give him what he needed to be able to do a good job. Surely it’s down to the professional to get the information they need? Whit says that he realized at some point I had employed the wrong kind of professional to do this job; I’m not entirely sure why he omitted to tell me this until after he’d done a substantial amount of work and racked up a decent bill.
I nearly forgot that I have misinterpreted everything he’s said and done! There is a strong implication that the situation I find myself in is entirely my fault because I wouldn’t listen to him. He ended one email to me with «The project ended prematurely because of your refusal to communicate with me instead of at me», and another with «No matter how you may attempt to twist the truth around, I obeyed this contract to the letter, and I now expect you to». I don’t even know the man, how dare he speaks to me like that! I don’t know where the attitude comes from but it’s awful and really doesn’t make me feel like negotiating.
Whit has no customer service skills, has his own ideas which he will fight for by being rude, even if you know his ideas are wrong for your business, and you are the client, and you are paying the bill! It has become clear that Whit is not a man to be disagreed with! The wrath of Whit is annoying!
I could have dealt with all that, if he’d done a wonderful, efficient job and I loved his work.

Rare is the designer who is down-​to earth, communicates clearly & effectively, is confident enough to allow the client to participate in the creative process, and exceeds output expectations sans any attitude. I can’t say enough about the exceptional & affordable work that Whit Gurley & Angled End Identities have performed for my business. In a field that is notoriously stuffy, working with Angled End is like opening the french doors.
