Captain Sam’s Ice Cream

Kentucky Derby was one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had. Actually tasted like bourbon mash, but in a good way.

I’m an ice cream sort’a guy. I love home made ice cream. These folks make their product right on premise. The shop looks and smells delicious. I had a small Butter Pecan. Small because I must watch calories. I was sad when l ate the last bite. I surely wanted more.
Also, the young lady who waited on my wife and I was lots of fun. She added a comfort factor to my in take of comfort food.
High praise to Captain Sam.

My husband and I stopped in here on our vacation in Portland a couple of weeks ago. We saw many ice cream parlors around the city, but this was the only one we tried. We both got a small cup of hard ice cream; me, salted caramel; him, Oreo. This is the first time I’ve ever had salted caramel flavored ice cream, and I would definitely get it again. No toppings are needed for this flavor. The Oreo ice cream was pretty generic.
The girl at the counter was very friendly and helped explain what the different ice cream flavors were, as some had very cryptic names (ie. Sea Biscuit). Neither of us were adventurous enough to those, but it goes to show they have something for any ice cream fan. Also, props for the wooden compostable spoons!

I’m a little surprised by the low reviews I’ve seen. We tried 4 things and were more than pleased with all of them. I had an Orange-​Pineapple waffle cone which was delicious. The ice cream itself was wonderful. My wife had a sundae that she loved, and my friend had a milkshake that he claimed was «made the way a milkshake is supposed to be made!»

Decided to try after the reviews, it was okay… Nothing special. Got a whoopie pie and a regular size in a dish and it was $ 9.40. That’s a lot to me. I am used to fielders choice in oob. Would have cost literally half.

Gave it a try with my wife after reading the reviews.
I had the chocolate which was milky and lacked a strong flavor.
My wife’s choice was also disappointing.
Price for one scoop was $ 3.95.
Pass on this place!

I should have known better — an ice cream shop on the most touristy street in Portland — how could it have been good? I was duped by the 4.5 star rating and the promise of creative flavors. I wish I would have simply walked a few blocks over, and satisfied my frozen dessert craving at one of the other shops in the area.
One of my favorite ice creams in the world contains bourbon, so when I saw that they had a flavor with bourbon, I eagerly asked for a sample. The girl told me that it really had a bite, which made me even more excited, but in truth, I couldn’t taste the bourbon at all. The consistency of the ice cream was a mess, as they didn’t compensate for the softening effects of the alcohol. I decided to try the rum banana… same as the bourbon. I sampled a few more flavors and realized that I wasn’t going to like anything. Since I had to buy something at that point, I went with the smallest cup they had. I can’t even remember what flavor I picked, it just wasn’t that memorable.
The girls working the counter were nice, but unfortunately that doesn’t make up for the sub-​par ice cream. Oh well, I won’t fall for that one again…

Wow wow wow!!! Got the sea biscuit and my wife hot the Coffee Oreo. Both were a HIT! Do not miss this joint!

Very good quality ice cream. Not a huge selection of flavors, but definitely some variety with a few unique options. I tried the salty caramel and it had good flavor and was a very creamy texture. My husband had the Seabiscuit (vanilla with biscoff cookies) which was really good! I also had molasses the only other time we’ve been here and that was solid too. They also have some cute, Maine gifty items inside for tourists.

Love the selection of homemade flavors. The Sammy cone is the perfect size for trying new flavors also great as a small but perfect ending to a meal.

We had ET (vanilla with Reese’s pieces), wild Maine blueberry, sea biscuit (vanilla with biscoff cookies) amd black raspberry… everyone liked theirs. A LOT.

Wow! So glad we finally found you! We’ve been to Portland scads of times, and stayed at Dimillo’s Marina before. How did we miss this? They have fabulous, original flavors. My bride had their Praline, and the ice cream was so creamy, it was almost … cheese like, but in the best of ways. I had the Kentucky Derby — subtle bourbon flavor in the base with chocolate chips and pecans that they insisted were not pralines. And I’ve never seen so many chocolate jimmies (sprinkles?) so expertly applied. While we sat and ate our desserts, another couple came in, just before they locked the door for closing. The staff was as patient with them as they would be at the start of their shift. He tasted the Biscoff Cookies and immediately started mooning. Maybe if I knew what a Biscoff Cookie was …
Anyway, don’t skip this place the next time you’re in Portland. We won’t, if I have to carry my wife.

There are three things that make this the best ice cream shop in Portland Maine: location, fresh homemade on site ice cream, and the owner.
Located in the heart of old port on commercial Street easy walking distance to the other retail areas of he harbor.
The ice cream is unique and made fresh routinely. I particularly like the Kentucky Derby which is a bourbon flavored ice cream full of nuts & chocolate. I made the mistake of getting a small. Don’t short change yourself. Get a medium at least!

Awesome Ice Cream. You can tell it is homemade.
They also sell Frappes which are amazing. Any ice cream flavor you want can go in the Frappé.

While walking Commercial Street the wifey and I decided to get some ice cream after our meal. So what do I do ??? I turn to Unilocal but of course !!! I did my search and Boom! Captain Sam’s!
Since it was about a block away it was very convenient for us. Upon entering Capt Sam’s it’s your friendly neighborhood Ice cream parlor with seating to your right and a small gift section to the right and all the yummy goodness right in front of you.
They had about 12 or so flavors with your choice I putting your dessert on a cup or cone. I decided to go with the E. T… What is the E. T you might ask? It was creamy vanilla ice cream with reese’s pieces peanut butter candy inside. They names it the E. T after the movie where E. T loved eating reese’s pieces and left them as a trail. Brought back memories and some type of feeling in my belly. It was very good, creamy and rich with great texture and flavor. No problems here we enjoyed our frozen treat.

Some other reviewers have remarked how this is just a touristy ice cream place and I have to agree. Nothing special here. A small variety of ice creams lacking distinguishing flavor. You’ll like your ice cream and go about your day. Ho-​hum…
If you want to stop with your family for a quick treat — fine. But there’s probably better ice cream close by if you’re looking for a more satisfying experience.

I found out about Captain Sams recently, I was just looking for ice cream and this came up. I tried it and I instantly fell in love. They have so many flavors to choose from
The staff here is so friendly. They like you to sample everything so you know what you like. The flavor I really like from them is coffee.
All of the ice cream here is clearly homemade. It has a taste like no other.
If you’re looking for ice cream, this is the place you need to go to.

Two of my favorite desserts are Biscoff cookies and ice cream. It only makes sense that when Captain Sam’s combines them into Seabiscuit ice cream the result is nothing short of delicious.
Their sizes are huge, and I probably could have gotten away with ordering a size smaller… but I’m not one to complain about too much ice cream.

I’ve had their ice Cream in the past. Not bad, not amazing. It’s just a tourist trap with decent ice cream and limited flavors.
My one star is for the shocking experience I had with the sales person. It was a hotter than expected day. My dog was dehydrated and we were out of water. The shop was empty and I was coldly greeted with a cross-​eyed chin hanging «can I help ya». I explained to the girl that my dog is dehydrated and asked her if I could either (a) have a small cup of water or (b) if she could fill my bowl up in her sink.
In the most nasty way she barked «we sell bottled water» while pointing at the over priced Poland Springs in their cooler. I pleaded with her to just fill my bowl in her sink or bathroom. Pure ugliness spewed out of her wretched, soulless, face. She refused to comply and enthusiastically shook her head «no» while she reveled in her little moment of power. I remained polite. We were tourists, far from our car and a known water source. It is extremely rare to meet someone like this and it’s Captain Sam’s misfortune to have placed her behind the counter of their establishment. I’ll bet she steals too.
We stopped by the bar a few doors down with the same request. The hostess, like any decent human, gladly offered a bowl of iced water. I just asked to use the bathroom where I filled the bowl and went on my way.

You scream i scream we all scream for ice cream!!!
This is the place, WOWZERS!!! Came in here because my kids wanted ice cream, so I got them each the flavor they picked, nothing for myself. As I was sitting there looking around and ready the menu, I couldn’t help myself, as it smelled absolutely divine inside. Thankfully one of my kids didn’t finish their ice cream and were ready to throw it out, when I decided to try a bite. OMG my mind exploded! Immediately I finished whatever they left and leaped toward the counter and ordered one just for myself. My mouth never thanked me enough!!!
5 Start!!! A must for anyone who is in the area & craving ice cream!
