Chestnut Tree Inn

You will absolutely get what you pay for.
The place is very clean. Looking at the other reviews of horror stories, I have to wonder if there was a change in ownership between those reviews and my stay. We had two rooms and both were spotless.
It’s convenient to shopping and right beside the highway. However, the walls are paper thin and you will hear everything, so bring ear plugs or music generating device!
There’s no coffee makers in the rooms, but coffee and tea are available ²⁴⁄₇ in the lobby.
They do the best possible with what they have. It’s a typical outside door, two floor, motel. Probably built in the 70s. It’s not bad for an overnight or few day stay, but if you’re looking for amenities, it’s probably better to go somewhere else.
I’d stay there again.

Didn’t get a good impression of the place

I spent two nights in this motel, and might have stayed more but the room was not very clean, and on the second night was disturbed by what I believed was a rodent. Today before I checked out, I found what looked to me like droppings on the shower stall ledge, and a vent cover hanging open with access to the fan. The manager immediately became defensive when I showed him pictures, and asked me what I expected him to do. «What do you think customers expect in a situation like this? I would like you to offer some discount on my stay.» He adamantly refused and sicked the maintenance staff on me like it was now also my job to explain the problem to him. I just proceeded to my vehicle, but after a minute during which I could see the manager explaining it all to him, he followed me to my car and tapped on the window, asked again the number of the room in question, and asked me to wait. Even as I began drafting this review he returned and gruffly insisted those were not mouse drippings and that the whole area behind the fan is covered, without egress for rodents.
In any case, whether or not it was a mouse (maybe I dreamt that part?), the room obviously wasn’t well-​cleaned, or whatever appears to be mouse drippings would have been removed.
I was surprised by the manager’s reaction, especially since I had already mentioned to him that I might stay as long as a week and had new reasons to be returning frequently. Had the manager not been so defensive, I would have welcomed even a discount on a future stay. I had slept well the night before; the parking lot is not QUITE as noisy as the nearby Motel 6. But if cleanliness matters to you, do yourself a favor and stay at the Ramada next door.

The worst service ever. Attempted to spend a week with my family in between apartments and was forced to vacate. What they told me was «you complain too much», or «we can’t satisfy your needs». The first issue that occurred was the blood spatter on the doors and walls. Then, I guess they issued a key to a separate guest to my room, because we had a group of random people enter or room in the middle of the night. Finally, my kids were looking for a sock and ended up finding a dirty hypo needle under the bed. They gave me my money back for the following day I paid for in advance, but nothing else and this was after authority’s were called. If I could give a negative I would, this place needs to be shut down!

I am absolutely appalled at this motel. Rates listed as $ 69. Actual price $ 150. Room was depressing and dirty. Asked by guest if I wanted to purchase marijuana. Clientele seemed shady and possibly dangerous. I can find a Hilton/​Sheraton/​Red Lion in Portland for less. I will never stay at this place again.

Decent cheap stay. There is surely some shady activities around but nobody bothered us. Good for just crashing for the night for a weekend in Portland.

Went to Portland over the 4^th of July weekend and decided to book with the Chestnut Tree Inn, Portland, OR because it seemed reasonable for the price. However, I was wrong when we arrived there. At a glance, the hotel looks and feels like it was a community extended stay for dislocated family and homeless people. The parking area is scary, dirty, and poorly secured. We requested a non-​smoking room but it did not matter. Guests in the next room were heavy smokers and the stench filtrated through the whole place. The bed spread had cigarette burns all over, blood stains, and the walls have not been cleaned for months. The amenities such as the dryer and drink dispensers were broken. The front desk staff unfriendly and unwelcoming. They spoke very little English and the young girl running the computer looked like she did not wanted to be there.
Across the street is the Ramada Inn. Much better place, clean, and secured for the same price.
Very concerned about the safety and health issues experienced at the Chestnut Tree Inn, Portland, OR.

This hotel must be sponsored by backpage or by the local strip club near by because let me tell you, there are more prostitutes here than there are rats in the New York sewer system. I wish I had a clicker with all the jons that would come knocking on a Radom door. I felt like I could’ve put a go pro outside my window to record all the activity that was outside and send it to world star hip hop.
The Indian guy that works the front is a rude person. Makes people wait so he can count money. He has no customer service skills. He should find another job that doesn’t have to do with customer service I.e. Janitorial.
One night there was a couple fighting and screaming outside. And the management didn’t do anything until we called!
This place sucks. This makes Portland look like a bootleg ghetto

I don’t even want to give it 1 star! I didn’t feel safe and when I got in the shower — there was a gob of shaving cream w/​hair shavings on the shower wall. We told the manager/​owner — and he yelled at his employee in front of us!

Got a smoking room, within 15 min, there was a baby roach. So I called to the office and they asked what a roach was so I showed them. I told them give me a non smoking room or I want my money back and they said if one is available and that I can’t get my money back. So luckily I got a non smoking room and didn’t see anymore roaches but I’m unhappy that I paid almost $ 100/​night from
. and that was discounted. Def a MOTEL not hotel. When I was checking out a lady was also demanding her money back to not embarrass the man at the counter

Horrible hotel with worse management! The hotel screwed up my reservation date by one day. I go to check in today and they told me it was for yesterday and as a no-​show fee they charged my credit card the full amount if the night stay ($ 69.78) and will not refund reimburse or re-​reserve my room for the intended date and correct one at that! I’m so mad and disgusted in the attitude and demeanor as well from this manager «Hamet» what a joke. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

Could have been a lot worse.

Wife and I used to stay here on our visits to the Portland area. Not a modern motel, but the rooms were always clean and well kept. Recently, the previous owners sold the business. The new owners made a lot of cosmetic improvements, However, curtains falling off the curtain rods, non-​operational vent fans in the bathrooms, and non-​operational smoke detectors were not replaced. Our last (and last forever) stay here — the first night I had to go to the front desk to request hangers for the closet. The second night, we came back to find a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on our door (these were not in the room originally, don’t know where it came from), so naturally the room was not serviced — so towels were on the floor, linens not changed, waste baskets not emptied, etc. Interesting, our room was the only one that had such a sign. No idea where it came from, but we did not put it out.
Never a good sign to get up in the morning, and see a half dozen police cars in the parking lot. Spend a little more, and stay at the Ramada across the street.

Too expensive, REALLY bad. If you HAVE to stay here, bring your own sheets, disinfectant and towels… :/

At first, I was scared of staying in the Chestnut Tree Inn due to all the negative reviews. We booked it prior to reading the Unilocal reviews, but we needed a cheap place to stay. For the price, you are getting a good deal and it’s NOT as bad as most people make it out to seem. Here’s my breakdown:
Location:
Right off the freeway, the 205. Close to the Max Rail Lines to downtown and there are a few stores near, like Fred Meyers and WinCo. Yes there are 2 strip clubs close by but it’s Portland the strip club capital of the country.
Service:
I never encountered a mean, annoyed employee. Everyone was nice and pleasant here.
Cleanliness:
The room was clean and typical of any hotel/​motel room.
Safety:
People comment on how shady this area is with hookers and drug addicts, but I never bumped into one and I walked everywhere even at night. Just use your common sense and keep your valuables at home. Never once did I feel unsafe. Our room was at street level facing the street and I slept soundly.
Overall, I’d stay here again:)

If I could give this place less than one star I would. Night one… Upon arrival we noticed several things: windows do not have locks aside from the flimbsy handle kind, windows have no screens (I like to open the windows for fresh air… not an option here), broken handle on our fridge, lots of people around that if you them on the street you’d cross if ya know what I mean. But we said screw it. It’s a cheap hotel and we are on a budget. Though we should have cancelled then. All night there was noise. Dog next door to us barking, people below us fighting, TONS of freeway noise, and anytime someone ran water a loud squeal would come through the wall. Needless to say I got no sleep. Second night. The folks under us were smoking marijuana about 11pm and it was so strong in our room I couldnt breath so I go down to the front desk and ask to be moved. They kindly moved us and I thought «finally some sleep!»… The new room they gave us was a conjoing room next to people with their tv up loud chit chattin away. I felt very uncomfortable being a tiny «deadbolt» away from strangers and my partner went down to ask if they had anything else. The gentlemen behind the counter informed her that we should «get over it and if we wanted a different room he would be charging us full price for a new one». So I write my review from this crap hole at 1am in my room where I am sure I will be getting no sleep. Spend the extra $ 20 and go to the Ramada across the street. This place is for tweakers and partiers.

Not what you’d expect for a cheap motel right off the highway. They have really made an effort with this motel (maybe to compete with the next door Ramada). Based on some reviews here, I’m guessing they are still working on the redecorating so you might want to make a point to ask for an updated room when you book. Our room had been updated nicely (with the exception of the faded bedding) and was very clean. The front desk staff was very friendly in spite of a frustrating issue with a guest repeatedly dialing 911 on accident from their room as we were checking in (which made the alarms keep going off). The breakfast offerings were not much. There were packaged danishes and a single apple available when I popped in. I was hoping for at least yogurt and cereal but the room was such a bargain, it seems a petty complaint and there is an Elmer’s directly across the street.

We booked on Priceline earlier in the day, and then arrived at night to find our reservation waiting for us. The staff people that checked me in and out had a very friendly, easygoing demeanor. For instance, the man who checked me in considerately wrote down the wifi password on the room key holder. Also, after I returned our room key in the morning my friend suspected that she might have left a personal belonging in the room, and I quickly borrowed the key back for a quick check with no problem. If I remember correctly, the double room we were in might have been lacking a hair dryer, and the microwave is in a shared room near the main office rather than in each room, though neither of those points are very big deals. The complimentary breakfast in the morning included juice and the individually packaged bear claws and other pastries sold at grocery stores.

DO NOT stay here. Everything you read on the website is a lie. Not sure where they got that plush lobby picture, but that is not part of the Motel.
* Door does not have lock on inside to keep housekeeping or other intruders out.
* had to wrestle with the window to lock it… we were on the ground street level.
* people loitering and smoking outside all night long
* Everything was dirty! Towels had black smudges all over, smudges on the walls.
* Website says plasma TV, no such thing was in our room
*continental breakfast consisted of pre packaged Danishes from Costco
Needless to say i didn’t sleep at all… we had second night booked but the jerk at the front desk said that it was our problem not his… talk about no customer service. No apologies were given for our dissatisfaction.

I can’t beleive we stayed a second night.
The place is not clean. There was black smudges on the pillowcase two nights in a row as well as one of the bath towels. They did change the pillowcases, you could tell the smudges were a different pattern than the night before. It looked like someone used them to clean their shoes or the wheels of a car and the laundry detergent just didn’t cut it. One of the bath towels was like that too. Another towel had orange stains on it (makeup?). Obvious drips of something on the kitchenette floor and the table were there when we arrived and still there when we checked back in to the same room next night. The smoke alarm is hanging from a wire on the ceiling.
The refrigerator made all sorts of noise, we ended up getting out of bed in the middle of the night to pull it away from the wall so we could unplug it until morning.
Funky musty smell in the room on and off.
On both nights there was a party in the room next to ours that were very loud at 3am and after. When we had told the front desk about it earlier the first night she was very nice about it. She said to let her know if it kept up and she would call the cops. It calmed down after a while the first night until around 3 when they were hanging outside the room laughing, having a great time and very loud (maybe b/​c there is no smoking in the rooms but is an ashtray out there?).
The next night we wanted to move «uptown» to the Ramada (actually across the street) but it was full. We were too tired to look elsewhere so ended back here. We were told the partiers were gone, but they were there in force, in the same room next to ours. It sounded like there were many people in the room, it was very loud from about 10 until well after three. Lots of banging and crashing. We did not complain, maybe just too dang tired. I don’t know how they did not hear it downstairs as we were directly over the front desk office.
The price is very reasonable, I think it was around $ 60 for a room with a queen bed and a kitchenette (but you have to bring everything for the kitchen, no tea kettle, dishes, cups, utensils, microwave…) It seems like it’s purpose is to accommodate the party people which would explain a lot.
Plenty of hot water.
24hour coffee was great.
The staff was very pleasant.
