Good, quality food, prepared well but don’t expect to be blown away with the best breakfast you’ve ever had.

I have driven by Dutch’s a hundred times, noting thay it is almost always empty. To me that signifies lousy food. I read a review of someone who thought it to be one of Portland’s best breakfast restaurants, and decided to check it out. I found out why it is empty so much of the time. I was the only person dining at 8 AM. At that same time, Marcy’s, Bintliff’s, hot Suppa, Brea Lu, all have people waiting in line to get in. This is why.
Dutch’s is a cafeteria. It has a bland menu. Aside from breakfast sandwiches, it had six choices. It was out of pancakes, so make that five. And there was a question about whether they were out of ham hash, so for the next person it might be four. I recognized that the bread had been toasted only by feel. It was slightly hard, slightly warm, so I will hazard a guess that it was in the toaster. Not a hint of browning. I did not like the ham hash, which was a bummer, since the hash, eggs and coffee cost $ 13. That would be coffee and two eggs that I liked. For $ 13.
It is beyond my comprehension that this restaurant has four and a half stars on Unilocal.I have to assume that the takeout breakfast sandwiches are good. Or that the same folks who think Demillo’s is Portland’s finest restaurant come here regularly.
Back to the cafeteria theme. It has the ambiance of an old, tired, bus station.
With all the great breakfast restaurants in Portland, this one has no reason to exist.

I can’t help but think of that Missy Elliot song, Pass The Dutch, when I go here. Maybe I’m dating myself as a teenager of the nineties, college student of the early 2000s by saying that, but I’m not ashamed.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system…
This place is great. The sandwiches are tasty. I don’t think it matters what you order. You can tell Dutch’s has worked hard to create interesting food at reasonable prices (I do have to say that once you order more than one thing the cost quickly add up. A donut is almost 4.00 $). And what’s up with their «hash browns?» These things are SO good. They are more like tater tots, which is awesome… Give me some tots, damn it!
All the food comes out smothered in something amazing, whether it’s maple syrup or a cheese sauce. The MacDutch sandwich is their version of a McGriddle from McDonalds. Next time I’m trying the burrito which looked large and in charge.
Come on and «pass the Dutch, baby»…

The food at Dutch’s gets a 5, 100%. I got the special ham hash with 2 perfectly overeasy eggs with a side of their homemade biscuits. Not your standard fluffy biscuit. A little on the flatter side but the taste is spot on. My boyfriend got the breakfast burrito filled with the most flavorful potatoes and sausage. I’m giving it a 4 though because the interior and atmosphere is lacking a bit. A bare space with just some standard tables and chairs lining one side of the room. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. Not the most appealing but if you’re looking for a quick and delicious breakfast, stop by here.

I consider myself a bit of a breakfast sandwich enthusiast, so Dutch’s had been on my radar for some time as a must-​try spot. Having now been in for their superb breakfast offerings multiple times, I have to say that this one lives up to the hype. In fact, «The Traditional» from Dutch’s gives my fave The #1 from Oh No Café a run for its money as best breakfast sandwich in town.
Also of note: the Mac Dutch features a delicious griddle cake that is bursting with maple flavor. Perfect for those savory-​sweet cravings. The pastry case offers an array of goodies that are hard to skip. For example, on a recent trip I partook of some breakfast dessert and went for a sugar-​crusted doughnut stuffed with strawberries and cream. Oh my. Amazing.
The interior of Dutch’s is big with a seat-​yourself setup and newspapers to peruse while you wait. Whether you are eating in or taking out, I think you’ll like it here.

Awesome place. Large inside. Coffee so delicious. So many breakfast and lunch options. Breakfast was out of this world.

Looking for a place to have breakfast during our first morning in Portland, I found this place on Unilocal.The moment I saw someone mention that they had homemade biscuits, I knew my husband and I had to come here.
With a cute country vibe on the inside, we knew we were in the right place. I had the traditional egg sandwich on their homemade biscuit with no meat (- $ 1.00) and add avocado (+ $.75), along with a hot tea. My husband had the Portland Breakfast and some coffee.
The food came out quickly, the staff was delightfully nice (especially for a morning shift), and I was happily surprised by the quality of the food. While it is diner-​style-​esque, it’s definitely a few steps above average diner quality.
Yes, in case you’re curious their homemade biscuit is freakin’ wonderful. While the egg sandwich looked a bit small (since it did fit inside a biscuit), it was enough to fill me up for a few hours of walking around the city.

Keeping this review simple like the food.
Go there. Get a sandwich. Not on a bagel, on a biscuit, you fool. And make it a combo with their cubic hash browns sent from heaven!
Buttery good times. Not a place for your diet, but really, who cares about that stuff?

I had breakfast here with some friends before heading to the Maine Escape Room (that deserves another review). 4 stars for food and 3 stars for service/​ambiance. I ordered the house salad ($ 7.5) and fresh squeezed orange juice. Salad’s portion was generous, but nothing special. Lemon dressing was super sour, my teeth still feel it at the moment. Orange juice was fresh, but you can get better one at Whole Food imo. My friends order the egg sandwich croissants and they were all tasty. The harsh browns were to die for! I love things that are crunchy (and oily.) so these really hit the spot. The space can use a lot of improvement. I had a hunch that this was a subway before — hence the sad looking tables and chairs and food chain feeling. That aside, the food is worth a visit!

Amazing casual breakfast! Had the chicken biscuit with an egg and it was awesome.
The cold brew coffee is really good and the hash browns were both in cube shape and delicious.
My gf had the not-​so-​traditional sandwich and it was also top notch.
Seriously awesome through and through.
Will come back again for sure. It’ll be a long drive from Boston but it’d be worth it.

The food at Dutch’s is consistently delicious and innovative. They are now also open on the weekends which is a HUGE plus, since before this they only had limited weekday hours which meant that since I don’t work downtown, I was NEVER able to try them out!
So yay for the expanded hours, now on to the food. Dutchs makes so many great things from their breakfast and lunch sandwiches, to treats like their caramel/​macadamia nut popcorn, homemade doughnuts and in house made potato chips. They also may have the most amazing home fries/​tater tots in this town, they are a must order. Seriously, no matter what you do, order the home fries. I have actually never ordered a dud here.

GREAT little breakfast place. I had the scallion cream cheese breakfast sandwich, and my husband had a traditional breakfast and fresh squeezed orange juice. Everything was great. The rest of the menu and the pastries on display sounded and looked amazing.

I have tried basically everything on the menu here and have yet to find anything I wasn’t totally pleased with. the fresh made chips are a great compliment to any sandwich. My favorites are the chicken parm sammich, the Italian cold cut, and the shredded chicken salad.
you really can’t go wrong eating at dutch’s. the breakfast and lunches are all super delicious! I do wish the prices were slightly lower but you can’t complain when the food is so quality.

Every good boozehound knows that after a heavy night of drinking until last call, the most important part of recovery is a nice brunch. Well, breakfast, at least. See, we wanted to do brunch at some place called Marcy’s Diner. But it turns out a bunch of other people had the same idea. And those people were less hungover and much more on top of that plan. Fuck those fucks.
So rather than wait 45 minutes to put food into my protesting stomach, we wandered over to Dutch’s. No regrets.
It’s not a diner. I wouldn’t even call it brunch. But it WAS breakfast. And you know what? It was pretty spectacular.
It’s sort of a strange setup. You order your food and sit down and they bring it to you, almost like a deli or some such thing. Except a deli with super fancy breakfast food. And apparently extremely popular breakfast burritos. I skipped on that because I prefer not to get diarrhea before noon as a general rule.
However, I did order the special — it was smoked salmon on a flavored cream cheese on some kind of toast. OK, I admit it’s not the best description, but it was awhile ago! And you know what? It was amazing.
Not exactly my typical hangover recovery food, but it totally hit the spot and I actually felt great. It was weird to eat something (mostly) healthy at a breakfast place, but I was happy I did, and I really thought the salmon/​flavored cream cheese combo was excellent. Along with some… I think there were some herbs or something? What am I, a food doctor?
Anyway. It was pretty awesome. And affordable. And they let us have free water. And some really cute girl was fixing her bike in front of the window. So that wasn’t too bad.
I’d go back.

How have I not written a review for Dutch’s yet? It’s almost too awesome for words. I’ve had breakfast and lunch here. I think both are divine.
Breakfast: OMG. Brioche cinnamon buns. That’s really all I need to say right? Get there early because they go quickly. I’m not an egg person so I stay away from the breakfast sandwiches or burritos. They look tasty if you’re into eggs. I had a chicken biscuit with gravy on it and I wanted to marry it. The chicken was crispy, the gravy was creamy and the biscuit was light and fluffy. I wanted to eat 4 of them, but I only had room for one.
Lunch: Hahahaha it’s awesome. I don’t even know what to say. A variety of freshly made sandwiches. I ended up going with the crispy chicken one because I can’t seem to get enough of their fried chicken. I don’t know what’s in the breading, but I think it might be crack and I need a 12-​step program to ease my addiction. I also got the onion strings and they are definitely something to share. They are crispy and come with a fancy sauce for dipping. I have no idea what makes it fancy and I’m not going to ask because it’s spicy and great.
The prices aren’t bad at all and you’ll feel very full when you’re done. It’s well worth the money and they are always adding new daily specials with a creative mix of ingredients.

Eat. Here. Now.
Their hash browns are as if hash browns and home fries got married and had beautiful square children.
The MacDutch is like McGriddle’s nicer, better looking cousin. I had to actually say, «MacDutch» several times in my head while ordering. It’s a biscuit/​muffin with syrup on it and egg, bacon & cheese.
Place was clean and staff was welcoming.

On my day off on Friday I wanted something new for breakfast. I have been wanting to try Dutch’s, so that is exactly what I did.
Right across from Slab on Preble St, Dutch’s resides. Parking was relatively easy to find especially in the morning. When I walked in it felt open and everything was clean. I went and looked at the board I just wanted to see how their traditional egg sandwiches stacked against other egg sandwhiches in the neighborhood.
I ordered one bacon egg and cheese and one with maple sausage.
I personally had the maple one. It was delicious. Some of the best sausage sandwhiches in portland. It was such a high quality sandwhich with oozing yummy cheese.
We also had the breakfast potatoes. WOW! they were so delicious. Crispy and crunchy on the out side and soft and tasty on the inside. Beautifully seasoned. I would go back just for a box of these bad boys. Love they give you the ketchup on the side automatically even though they didn’t need ketchup. The workers here were also very nice and patient.
I had this order to go and it was still piping hot when I got home.
The look of this place seems to be the only thing people complain about. I hate that… Some of the best places in nyc are in squalor. This place is at least clean and you don’t have to walk through a brothel to get to it so people have some perspective and stop complaining about the looks of the place it’s a breakfast lunch place not suppose to be a luxurious restaurant… The food however is amazing and that’s all that matters.

If Unilocal had subcategories, there would be a lot of 1s and 5s. The food was top-​notch, but other factors about my visit lowered the overall experience to a ³⁄₅.
The layout of this place was strange. It reminded me of a hospital cafeteria trying not to be a hospital cafeteria. It the place was huge, but too big for the number of chairs and tables they had. Everything was SO spread out. And the prices were ok. Definitely not a place to go to save money, especially if you’re taking home pastas and salads.
Service was also left to be desired. The food took awhile (about 7 – 10 minutes for a breakfast sandwich). Plus, they forgot my roommates drink (10+ mins for hot chocolate). Furthermore, I overheard the guy behind me complain about his order being wrong, and stated how this is something that commonly occurs to him at Dutch’s.
But the reason this place isn’t getting a negative ranking is the food. It was DELICIOUS! I had a breakfast sandwich with homefries, and it was stunning. Very few places can make a sandwich or potatoes taste this good.
Overall, I would come back for the food, but I would be hesitant to bring a date here. The food was 5/​5, but everything else was left to be desired.

This update deserves it’s own separate review. I FINALLY tried the breakfast sandwich, with the highly-​touted homemade biscuit option and with the sausage option. Oh my f**king god is this sandwich amazing. Sorry Ohno, I love your breakfast sandwiches too, but Dutch’s just beat you in a street fight. I don’t know if they use ground unicorn horns in their biscuits, but they just melt in your mouth. The biscuit, combined with the maple (?) sausage makes for an amazing mouth sensation. It pains me to even write the words ‘mouth sensation’, but it’s completely true. What a flavor combination. My only complaint is that I didn’t order two.
Give it a shot. Sandwich + coffee was about $ 6 or $ 7. Totally worth it.

Dutch’s is simple.
And that’s why it’s amazing.
Dutch’s isn’t for the tourist looking for a mind-​blowing five-​star frou-​frou tell-​all-​your-​friends-​when-​you-​get-​home dinner. It’s for the Mainers. The ones that park six (blustery cold) blocks away from their work because those monthly spaces are cheaper than the garage with spaces too small to fit a Vespa.
A breakfast sandwich under $ 5? Made to order? On a homemade biscuit? Delicious. This is breakfast-​on-​the-​go nirvana. Comfort soup for lunch that won’t break the bank but doesn’t skimp on heartiness? Perfect. No nonsense, tasty, filling … and simple.
