Earthquake Tech started out in 1995 as Steve Gemmell Contracting, a sole proprietorship founded on the principles of owner-​operated, hands-​on construction contracting. It wasn’t until 1999 that we began to do seismic retrofitting as our primary business. Having just purchased a classic turn of the century Portland home, my dad asked me to get earthquake insurance. I contacted my insurance agent to inquire about earthquake insurance for my home. He asked me the magic question, «is your home bolted down?» My insurance agent advised in order to qualify for earthquake insurance my home needed to be bolted to the foundation. I approached an engineer, who we still work with today to get the specifics of what was necessary to have my home bolted to the foundation and he explained how to do it properly. Seeing the need for a seismic retrofit contractor in the Portland area I committed to this work full time and Earthquake Tech was born.

Earthquake Tech did a major seismic retrofit to our home in the NW hills listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The seismic issues were challenging. The house was on a significant slope with 9′ 6″ basement ceilings and walls constructed of unreinforced brick. Steve Gemmell at Earthquake Tech proposed an «SR Wall» system, which involves constructing new interior structural walls that are anchored to new footings and then attached to the house via a special structural glue foam. Earthquake Tech handled the entire project, including getting engineering plans, performing construction work, and arranging for city inspections. By using Earthquake Tech, we were able to avoid the massive effort and aesthetic issues of replacing the existing brick basement walls with new concrete walls. I couldn’t be more pleased at the work done by the Earthquake Tech team.

We’ve hired Earthquake Tech twice, for Gas Valve Shut-​off Installation and full Earthquake Retrofitting. In both cases, and in all of our interactions with the Earthquake Tech team, they have exceeded expectations. The work has been outstanding: on time, on budget and very thorough. And the working relationship has been excellent: professional, friendly, with fast response times on any inquiries.

had this group out for a bid and they did a walk around and entered the crawlspace and said they’d get me an estimate in a few days later. Two days later I had a detailed bid that included some of the options I had asked them to consider (I asked if a specific modification would work for my layout). I told them I had to wait for a specific event and would get back to them in 4 – 6 weeks.
They checked in a couple of times during that wait but only in a friendly, non-​pushing way.
By the time I had the funds, I needed some additional clarification about items on the bid. Called them and they came back out and walked through with me answering all of my questions.
I put half down to get on their schedule (2 weeks out). They made a confirmation call. Showed up right on time. Were very hard workers for two solid days. I was working from home and checked on the progress. They had scheduled the city inspector for late the afternoon of the second day and they were finished on time for that successful inspection. They explained how to reset the automatic gas shut-​off if needed. They did a great job of cleaning up. I had put up tarps but they added some drop clothes and carried away all the debris. There was some dust from the sheetrock they had to remove but not much at all.
It was a great experience. We have a lot of our net worth in this house and it feels better to know this 1925 home is bolted to the foundation, has the beams strapped to the posts, has additional hot water tank bracing, and has an automatic gas shut-​off that I can reset as needed without having to wait (with potentially thousands of others) for the gas company to turn back on the gas.

After scheduling and canceling once, then scheduling again and NEVER SHOWING UP or answering any calls, my husband lost two days off of work waiting for these losers to show up and they never did. We ended going with a different company that did a great job.
