Really, a last minute decision to eat here. Wasn’t craving anything in particular, but man I’m so glad I randomly chose this place because this chicken was so good. I got an order for myself, white meat, came with 2 wings, a breast, and of course a biscuit. I let my husband have some, and he ate half of my order and asked me to order another one to go so he can have it at the airport for dinner. Even hours later, my husband said it was still so good. Really, one of the best chicken I’ve ever had. And great service to boot.

I didn’t want to eat another thing. Nong’s chicken rice and The People’s Pig porchetta sandwich almost KO’d me. But I saw fried chicken and had to have it. This time my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. But I figured since I was here, I would eat a little bit and save some for later. Handing over my $ 6, I got a container with a thigh, drumstick, biscuit, and my choice of potato salad. I dove into the drumstick which was incredibly juicy. I drizzled some honey earlier and that added a nice sweetness to the savory chicken. The biscuit was somewhat dry though. The potato salad was well prepared, creamy, and had substantial chunks of potato. After finishing off the drumstick, and the bite of the biscuit and potato salad, I was at my capacity. But I was happy that I would get to eat the rest later and definitely looking forward to it.

My rating is between 3 and 4 stars leaning more towards a 4 star. But I figured I would rate it 3 because people will actually read my review. The fried chicken at Flogene’s was delicious. I wouldn’t call it the best fried chicken ever. I thought the seasoning was good and flavorful, the chicken was fresh, moist and cooked just right. My only complain is that I wish the fried chicken was crispier. Maybe it was an off day? It was crispy but just not crispy enough.

What’s that? Yes, you’ll marry me?! Zoh mah Gawd! Does that mean I get to have your fried chicken for dinner EVERRRRYNIGHT?!! Because let’s face it. Your fried chicken kicks the a$$ of just about every other piece of fried chicken I have ever had in Portland. Not to say that places like Country Cat, Screen Door, and yes… even Montage doesn’t have great fried chicken. It’s just that your fried chicken made me cry tears of joy and left me heartbroken simultaneously. Joyous tears because it was so f’n delicious and heartbroken because I ate it all and didn’t have anymore cash on me to get another helping. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t have another helping because it may have sent me into a food coma. But oh dear Flogene, your perfectly seasoned, moist fried chicken left me breathless, the deviled potato salad speechless(good thing because onion breath is delicious but deadly), and that flaky biscuit with honey… huh? What were we talking about again? Dude, my new favorite spot in P-town for fried Big Bird. Fork, stuck, done. A hui hou!

This is truly a five star fried chicken experience. As we were looking for some pre-dinner eats(because in Portland you just can’t have 3 meals a day,) we walked by Flogene’s with the sighting of fried chicken. We ordered a leg and thigh with a biscuit plus one extra piece of chicken. With the promise of making the chicken fresh, we were given a 15 minute wait time. The anticipation grew as we waited, and finally, piping hot pieces of fried chicken were in our hands. The crispy skin was well seasoned, with just the perfect thickness. It also wasn’t drenched in oil either, which was a good change. The meat was juicy and just right, so tender and pulls right off the bone. A hot biscuit with honey to complement the chicken was a match made in heaven. Flaky, buttery bites, with a hint of sweetness. Fried chicken, biscuits, and Portland; it’s the most perfect combination.

Fried chicken can be as tricky a topic as religion or politics. I believe that most people have a sort of platonic ideal of it, usually set fairly early in their lives, and tend to measure every other contender against it. So let me state that Flogene’s chicken is NOT the chicken I grew up with; my grandmother’s delicious but puzzling Fried Chicken is still unique and I fear will die with her. But, I can say without a moment’s hesitation that Flogene’s is the best Fried Chicken place in Portland and does remind me of several of my great Aunts’ birds from Southern Missouri. I had the chicken and biscuit plate with a side of potato salad. 1) Potato Salad: Just the right mix of mayo, paprika, celery and egg. All the flavors worked together. If potato salad can have an inner life, this one does. 2) Biscuit: Healthy sized. Not layered like a folded biscuit, but crumbly with a lovely buttery flavor. I think it goes without saying that Flogene is not afraid to use animal fat in any of her products. It’s up there with biscuits from The Screen Door and there is no higher praise I can give a Portland biscuit. I’d love to find out what they are like under some peppered chicken gravy. 3) The chicken: Two legs and a front wing. The batter wasn’t crunchy at all, but a tight auburn color with a hint of pepper. The chicken itself was top notch; fresh and moist. Like I said, not my grandmother’s, but I was definitely looking around for Aunt Hazel’s pickled watermelon and Aunt Olie’s sweet corn. All this set me back $ 7.50 and made me dream of college football and hockey season, sitting on a sofa and raising my cholesterol to a wonderfully unhealthy degree. If you like fried chicken and you haven’t been to visit Flogene, you are a fool. Go give this woman your money so she can stick around.

Amazing fried chicken! We ordered the chicken & biscuit combo($ 6) and added potato salad sides($ 2.50. The portions were huge, I couldn’t finish the biscuit and barely made a dent in my potato salad. The chicken was super flavorful, had nice crispy skin, and the meat was unbelievably tender and juicy… no dry chicken here! I enjoyed the biscuit, but felt it was lacking a little something — maybe I should have tried it with honey as a previous reviewer mentioned. In hindsight I also would have ordered a different side — slaw or maybe the cucumber salad– as the potato salad felt a little too heavy combined with the fried chicken. Would definitely recommend a stop here! They definitely don’t make chicken like this in Canada *sad sigh*…

I made a list before I went to Portland of all the best breweries, restaurants and food carts. It was pages long, a bit ambitious I know. One day of our trip I decided to meet my guy on his lunch break, bringing a bounty of food cart treats for my hard working man. I found Flogene’s and stopped by to order up some Home Cookin’. I went with the Fried Chicken and a biscuit plate for $ 6, added the beans with meat in them for an additional $ 2 and a soda for $ 1. What a good deal, we both split the plate with a couple other items and LOVED it. There are a lot of food carts in Portland with great prices. A lot less pretentious than the San Francisco food cart scene and so many to choose from. Luckily, I chose right with Flogene.

I like what Flogene is cookin’. 4 ½ stars! The fried chicken is perfectly seasoned. Not the overly-salty stuff that some seem to think passes as southern. Crispy, flavorful, hot. Fries are steak-size and are a perfect complement to the. The only disappointment was the biscuit. I would skip that one next time. Not fluffy and a bit too sweet. Very friendly staff. I’ll be back!

My partner and I drove down to Portland from Vancouver. We were flustered with bliss, well, at least I was, to find that this place was still open(after being disappointed to find Built to Grill already sold out all its food). We arrived at Flogene’s around 3pm on a Friday afternoon. This food truck looks like any other food truck. There was no line up. Seriously, if it isn’t for all the crazy 4 — 5 star reviews, I probably would just swoop by this place. We ordered a combo of fried chicken with a biscuit and a cucumber salad. The lady who served us was very friendly. Soon after we placed our order, less than 5 minutes, my food was ready. I don’t know how it is possible to cook fried chicken to perfection within 5 minutes, but I am not going to ask. The 2 large pieces of chicken was mean. Real mean. I don’t know how this evil food can taste like heaven, but again, I am not going to ask. The batter was crispy and surprisingly not oily/greasy. The chicken was well coated with the batter. The batter was just right — it wasn’t thin or heavy. The chicken was juicy — probably the juiciest fried chicken I have ever had. My partner and I couldn’t get enough and couldn’t care less if we ate like barbarians on the street of Portland. The butter biscuit with honey was heavenly too. I’ve never thought about adding honey to my biscuit but thanks to the friendly lady who said to give it a try. I was glad I did. The sweetness of the honey balanced out the savory chicken very well. The zing from the cucumber salad was quite strong, as we were warned. The zing, which cut the grease of the chicken, allowed me to eat more than I should have. The combo was so big the two of us adults couldn’t finish and had to take it back to the hotel. This place is solid. I highly recommend it.

Ok, to write this review, I must go back to that place. The place to which their chicken took me. A beautiful place. Seriously though folks, their chicken is mad good. I got two juicy… nope. scratch that… juice-AYE pieces, plus a big olé hand made buiscut… all for 6 bux. The lady from Tennessee serving it up was super sweet and friendly, too. A must eat food cart for all PDXers.

I needed some good chicken, fried evil juicy goodness, was I going to be satisfied, especially reading all the reviews on this site as I drove all the way to Portland to see the scene of the ever popular food cart revolution, well my heightened expectation was met, and this little shack be serving some kick-ass comfort food delight! There is no size when ordering, it is just one size when ordering the fried bird, practically looked like half a chicken in this box to go! Me and my partner stood in front of this cart, and seeing her reach for money just to pay for the feast that was upon us was quite a treat. This was before even breaking open the box that was presented upon us. The order was simple, fried chicken, a biscuit, and some pickled cucumber on the side. The woman working here was ‘smiley’ and happy on this sunny day, and warned us of the sourness of the cucumber. The box, after the money was sucked up by this cart, came in a flash, in all it’s cardboard goodness. The box was big, not massive, big, wondering, it’s only fried chicken, how big can it be. As I said in the beginning, the size looked like half a small bird, with a nice dark seasoned breading wrapping/engulfing the bird, this thing was picture perfect, not over battered, the terms just right come out of our mouthwatering ‘eating holes’ looking at his soon to be devoured dish! This is gourmet fried chicken, and not your KFC, Popeye’s or Church’s(which is the extent of my finger licking good knowledge on this treat!) fast food, run in and pick it up(even though it is kind of the same, just from one cart!) non-consistent chicken, this is Flogene’s! As my significant other combed through the bird, looking at the fried crust carefully like someone out of CSI to scope for prints, a smile came from her face, satisfaction, not just yet, not until this sucker was chewed up. I’ve never seen fried chicken this juicy, I can only explain what I saw in our eating adventures with this box, eating the fried batter with the meat, eating the fried batter alone, noticing the glistening meat, ripping the pieces apart, more juice flowing out like someone was basting the bird from the inside when we got to the center. Not a hint of dryness, this was damn satisfying. Next came the biscuit, this was another amazing addition, not just a side, but also a star to the whole meal. This thing was plump, buttery, and you could hear the nodding shake from your own internal arteries after already having the fried juicy goodness of the chicken. When we opened the box, we were advised to put some hot honey on the biscuit, we were puzzled, we followed orders, and they were not wrong on this issue, do as they say, they are the makers of the product! Biscuit’s with honey, now that is something new, the buttery thing just melded so well, that it is hard to explain. We did not finish the biscuit, and it was saved for our day trip to the wineries the next day(too good to throw out!). We last had the side of pickled cucumbers, and these suckers had such a zing, where you mouth almost wanted to pucker, but it’s one of those foods where you just keep popping in your mouth for the zing, and the change to your face. We also didn’t finish this, and it came with us the next day to our winery tour! Also, because of you(Flogene’s) I can’t stomach another piece of commercialized ‘run-of-the-mill’ mass produced mystery fried chicken! Grrrr…

Hey Flogene! You really think you can make fried chicken better than my mother? I’ve been searching for Portland’s best fried chicken for some time now. Screen Door is good; Pine State is delicious(but smothering in gravy is cheating); and Cackalack’s has went from great to absolutely horrendous. Flogene’s reviews look golden, but can it really be that good? Better than Screen Door? Better than Country Cat? BETTERTHANMYOWNMOTHER? You really think so Flogene?! Well! I’ll take that challenge!!! I was RAISED on fried chicken. After all, my great grandmother(who’s still alive and feisty as ever) is from Tennessee — and they know fried chicken. I finally made the trek in from Beaverton during lunchtime. It was cold and rainy. And it didn’t come out as quickly as the other Unilocalers said it does. For a moment I thought«Nope. Not gonna live up to the hype.» But in the end, I’d be just as happy had I waited even longer than the few minutes it took(which is to say, after eating the chicken, there’s no possible way to be any happier — unless of course you mix in some kind of drugs — or sexual acts — or, umm, nevermind. The verdict: Sorry mom. Flogene make’s not only the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, but it definitely goes on Best Food All Time list. So juicy. So flavorful. So, so incredible. This is one of those experiences that is so hard to put into words. The crust has perfect thickness, texture, moisture, and has been fried to perfection. Also, the sides are almost equally as delicious. I had the potato salad and the baked beans. Both were incredible and the perfect compliment to my new favorite fried chicken. And don’t forget that incredibly moist, flaky, flavorful biscuit. So damn good… Please, Flogene. Never change a single thing. You have created perfection.

So one day, while on a business trip, I found myself hungry and walking the streets of Portland. I knew that Portland is famous for its food carts downtown, so I decided to check one out. I was walking around this one block, seeing whether something will catch my eye. And sure enough, I stopped walking when I reached Flogene’s Home Cookin’. Oh HI! The greeting was heartfelt, with that Southern drawl that makes you feel like her words are hugging you. As with lots of other reviewers here, I tried the fried chicken and a biscuit($ 6). I was asked if I wanted sides, and when I couldn’t make up my mind, I was offered to sample all three of them! Beans, spiced potatos, or pickled cucumbers. They were all good, but I guess I was a fan of the beans. And should I say something about the chicken? It’s oh so good. It’s that good that I know if my dad were eating it, he would eat even the bones by chewing it until it’s all cracked up. If there weren’t any other choices around, or if my stay in Portland is longer, then I would definitely head back here and try their other offerings.

After reading rave reviews online, I went to check this cart out. I ordered the Southern fried chicken and biscuit($ 6). You can choose what part of the chicken you want(white meat or dark meat). I left it up to them, and I got one drumstick and one thigh. I also decided to try Flogene’s potato salad, handed down from her grandmother($ 1), which includes diced boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, yellow onions, celery, and other ingredients(ooh, secret spices!). I expected to wait a few minutes, especially since I’m thinking the chicken will take a while in the fryer. But a mere 30 seconds or so later, the entire meal was in my hands. Whoa! At Flogene’s suggestion, I also put some(warm) honey on the biscuit. I’ve had my share of fried chicken growing up(especially since my mom and grandmother also like to cook it up from time to time), but this just may be the best I’ve had… certainly the best in Oregon. The key here was seasoning the actual chicken, not just the flour-and-egg mixtures that make up the crispy fried exterior. The chicken was extremely moist, just oozing with those delectable juices. While I’m sure some people may think the chicken would be too salty or overseasoned, I personally loved it. I’d rather have a lot of flavor than none at all. The biscuit was light, buttery, and simply phenomenal. People from the South could get one of those nostalgic moments eating them. The honey was a lovely accompaniment here, and it still wasn’t too sweet for my tastes. Hell, I shoulda doused my chicken with that honey! D’oh! And to make it three for three, the potato salad was excellent. Creamy and seasoned beautifully. The crunch and bite of the onions and the celery really elevated this side dish. While I would have preferred the potato salad a bit colder(it was still warm because it had just been prepared), the flavors basically sent me to cloud nine, cloud 200, wherever. This was one of those times where I wanted to be seated at a table, with more of this food getting pumped up from underneath and into my plate. So what if I consume about 20,000 calories’ worth of their food? I’d just hibernate or work out for the next eleventy billion days anyway. This epic meal was $ 7 total… yes, please! My only suggestion to this cart: get on social media, namely Facebook and Twitter. Utilize it a lot. Perhaps they would get exponentially more foot traffic. But in the meantime, this gem doesn’t always have huge lines(well, it wasn’t when I was there), so it may be a good thing to try them now! It truly takes a special meal to get a five-star rating from me. Add Flogene’s to that rarefied list! Holy crap, that was awesome…

I read Michelle H. review, and knew that I would be trying Flogene’s soon. First off, I love fried chicken. Yep, it is one of my favorite things. Another thing that attracted me to this cart: PIMENTOCHEESE. Now, we don’t see it very often up here in the PNW, but damn it is good. It is tasty, with a little spicy bite to it. I will be going back for more of it without a doubt. She only charged $ 1 for a little on the side. Flogene herself is a super nice lady, as was pointed out by other reviewers. She’s friendly, willing to let you sample what they offer, and is enthusiastic with sunny disposition and cute accent. Another thing that impressed me, the prices. It seems that lately food cart prices have been going up, and up. While I understand that food prices are rising, I don’t expect to pay the same at a cart as I do at a brick & mortar restaurant. Six bucks for 2 pieces of freshly fried chicken and a biscuit is a great value. So to sum it up: 1) Tasty crispy fried chicken 2) PIMENTOCHEESE 3) Flogene 4) The prices are on point for great food Psssssssst, Flogene, get on Twitter. It will help get the word out, and people will be able to contact you. Posting hours on here will be a big help too. Of course I forgot to mention these things until I got home.

Can I give 7 stars? Yeah, this place deserves 7 stars or more… Everyone was so friendly & welcoming. The smiles & laughter were so inviting. And that was just from the first moment, I got there. The food was amazing! I ordered Fried Chicken(2 pieces), a biscuit and potato/egg salad. I didn’t need ketchup for the chicken, I didn’t need butter for the biscuit & I didn’t need to put anything on the potato/egg salad. Just perfect!!! The fried chicken — crispy, crunchy, not oily, not greasy, the meat was perfectly tender… Mmmmm perfectly delicious!!! :) The Biscuit — Golden brown on top & bottom. Flaky on the outside. When I split it open in half, it soft and moist inside… OMG, I was in heaven! :) BYFAR, THEBESTFOODCARTINPORTLAND… and if you follow my Unilocal or Facebook, you know I eat all day… Trust me you won’t be disappointed. Oh, by the way, the pretty lady at this cart has the cutest Southern accent. Just sayin’. :) ADDONLATER: My friend just posted on FB using my photo —-«Badass Fried Chicken by real Southerners in PDX.» :)

Really good fried chicken, like the first reviewer said, the salt and pepper on the skin was tasty. Skin was very crisp and the meat was moist. The biscuit was freaking amazing.
