Gartner’s Country Meat Market

Gartner’s has been around since 1959. We shopped here years ago and may be due to having a New Seasons close by we stopped shopping there for a while.
A few months ago one of my friends gave me a gift certificate to Gartner’s and glad he did. Forgot what a great butcher shop/​meat Market this was. Lots of choices. of everything meats. Great selection of all different cuts of beef; pork & chicken. We bought a couple of 3 pound cowboy cut rib eyes. Meat was flavorful and tender when we finally cooked them.
Now we needed 12 pounds of beef short ribs for a dinner party and decided to go to Gartner’s. They were huge and best prices in town for good quality meat. Great selection of bacon; smoked meats; poultry and all types of seasonings/​rubs too. We also bought a beef roast. some ham for sandwiches and a dry rub to try.
It was busy again when we were there today but service was prompt; friendly and efficient.
Prices are very reasonable considering the great quality of meats.

Best ever! My favorite place, everything is quality. The marinated short ribs are amazing and the mushroom caps filled with sausage are to die for. The bacon, the cold cuts, sausages, and pig ears are everything that make me want to go back. The employees are amazing and the line moves fast. Closed Monday’s! So get your fill on Sunday!

Awesomely delicious! After living in Portland for years and never having visited Gartner’s, I’ve recently become a devoted convert. In the past two months I’ve purchased meaty and tender country pork spareribs, sumptuous English bacon, beautiful beef pot roast, and pork butt roasts. High quality, terrific service, and much broader selection than either New Seasons or Whole Foods.

Stopped in quickly with the SO because we saw a sign for smoked dog bones for $ 1.99 a lb. We have our two pups with us for the weekend so we thought we would spoil them a bit.
We definitely didn’t realize how huge this place is until we went inside! The place was poppin for a Sunday and everyone seemed to be vets of the place, knowing the drill. We walked around and checked out their condiments, sauces, and frozen meat section alone the outside wall and then moved toward the meats in the middle.
They had smoked bones in different sizes and pig ears for the dogs. As far as everything else, it’s too much to type… There was jerky for $ 20/​lb, free Pepperoni sticks for your first visit (which are normally $ 0.75 each), and a TON of meat. You guess it, they had it. Good prices, good service, good atmosphere. This all coming from a vegetarian: P

Unbelievable meat shop in portland! After visiting this shop over a month ago, we rarely by meat from the grocery stores as the quality and freshness is just that good. I highly recommend that you take the trip, but be aware that weekend game days during fall may be a bit busy. It is worth the trip and money to head there for you meat!

This place smells terrific and the meats are the best in town. They also have dog bones for dogs that normally chew through anything in a couple minutes. Bones for Taz was my original reason for going, but everything there is to notch flavor. The prices are totally reasonable.

A little pricey! They finally have grass fed but they only have it is frozen burger patties. So at least you’re starting to get grass fed hopefully they expand and then maybe I increase my rating. They have great cuts great selection I do not like the fact that use nitrites and nitrates. But that’s only with the smoked meet so you can avoid it in that case. Probably one of the best things there are is the pork butt you can get one already season or do-​it-​yourself freaking YUM!
Friendly service pretty much but whatever you want unless you want everything cut and I’ll charge you so yeah pretty good deal and break down the animals if you gotta go hunting.

For many people in Portland this is the real place for sausage and hand cut steaks. They advertise «Freezer Meat» and will sell you nearly a whole cow. So, I had this place on my radar for a long time, and finally got over here this past week. When you walk in you can smell the hotdogs in the hot-​tray (for sale), and the many varieties of Sausage in the display are an amazing spectacle. I spent a lot of time in Chicago and these places are all over the place — specific to Ethnic groups, and neighborhoods, and this place reminded me of those Midwestern ethnic/​immigrant meat markets — a very good thing.
I tried a few varieties of sausage, and was very pleased. The XXX hot links are so freaking hot I have no idea if I will buy them again, but holy cow, these are as hot as you can get! I love hot food, but these are smoking hot — the salesman was not kidding when he asked «are you SURE you want the XXX hot ones?» Haha, well, fire in the hole!
We got some steaks also cut to order and I was standing next to a guy getting 3.5 inch tenderloin cuts — those looked amazing.

I dropped off my elk to get processed a few months back. The meat is amazing. Everything that gartner’s processed turned out the best possible. The burger is the best i have ever had and all the dry meats have great flavor. My only complaint is a lack of communication. When i dropped off my game they told me it would be done in 4 weeks. By week 6 i called to see what was the hold up, and all i got was «it isnt done yet». I took almost 8 weeks until all the processing was done. Still worth a 5 star review though because of the quality of work.

Grilling? Cooking? BBQ? Bacon? Sausages? Ribs? Wow, so many options with fresh selections! It’s a busy shop but they got the system down. Grab a number and wait for a staff member to help you out. Expect a bit longer wait on weekends. Prices are amazing and you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget to grab a dog bone for your pup and get some pepperoni sticks for yourself. Be careful though, those are so addicting!

Located not too far from the 205, this local establishment seems to have it all in terms of your traditional meats. Porterhouses marbled and cut just right, marinated steaks and smoked turkey. They are a larger butcher with display cases full for your purview.
In addition, they carry a fantastic array of house made sausages that have to be experienced to truly appreciate. Cheddar brats, hot links and traditional German franks all burst with flavor once thrown on your grill. These are folks that know how to treat meat right and their staff are knowledgeable and quick to assist.
Parking is ample enough and everything from outside in is clean. Pricing is on par with any butcher you might go to and not of the specialty realm that some PDX places might charge you. Finally, to top your order off, be sure to buy a tub of marinade. When I was there, people were grabbing stacks of the stuff and honestly, the stuff doesn’t disappoint.

Meat, glorious meat. Often packed (with good reason!) but efficient service.

Hands down the best place ever. The beef short ribs are awesome. I also love their head cheese. The quality of the meats are fantastic and the staff is so friendly. Be sure to grab a number right away if it’s busy when u get there. Everybody is served on a number basis in the order they pick the number. Kids get a free hot dog or pepperoni also. You will be amazed with this place.

I’m going to keep this short and sweet: If you love meat and if you love to cook at home, go to Gartner’s and be treated so kindly when picking up your favorite cut of steak.
Seriously! They’ve got so many different varieties of beef and pork cuts (I haven’t paid attention to chicken) that I don’t know why I bother going anywhere else. I am actually on this page because I have a pork butt/​shoulder that I need to get for tomorrow.

What can you say about this place? It’s awesome. My first trip was the day before the 4^th and it was PACKED. And hot. We walked in when they were serving 22 and we pulled 75. It took about 20 minutes but it wasn’t bad. You almost need that amount of time to get your order ready. They have an amazing assortment of sausages/​hot dogs/​brats, etc. they even have head cheese and liverwurst. The person who helped me was happy to help and answered all my semi-​ridiculous questions.
I ordered 4 smoked pork chops and they are cut to order which is awesome. They also had beef tongue which is not as easy to find anymore. The prices are higher than what I pod in Olympia but considering the area it’s to be expected. We will definitely be back to try more of their brats/​sausages and bacon.
Totally worth it!

This place is heaven on earth for humans… and most likely hell for cows and pigs.
I’ve been to Gartner’s a couple times now and love it. If you go on a weekend, be prepared to wait about 15 minutes before your number gets called. It’s ok. Take a deep breath. It’s worth the wait.
They have such good quality meat at Gartner’s. Everything from bacon, burger patties, and pork chops to flank steak, pickled pigs feet, marinated steaks, even salmon, and housemade pastrami.
This last trip was for the boneless pork loin chops. Not sure if I just got lucky cooking them, but they turned out great, nice and juicy, great flavor. I also eat a sandwich pretty much every day for lunch, so I got some of the pastrami. HOLY CRAP THAT’S GOOD. Seriously. I’m not joking.
I’m not fully sure how it works, but they have a wild game drop off. I’m assuming that means if you’re a hunter, you can bring your animals here for butchering, which is not a service I expected to be available within the Portland city limits. So if you love meat, come check out Gartner’s.

Driving down the road I saw this out of the corner of my eyes, and said «I’m finally gonna go in there». So we did. Walked in, and the place was packed full of customers (always a good sign). Personally, I judge a meat market strictly on their pepperoni/​jerky, then move forward/​not return after to try other things.
Typically if the pepperoni/​jerky is more expensive you’ll be getting a higher quality meat. This was not the case today.
I got 3 of the 5 options we saw on the counter. 1 piece of peppered jerky ($ 20.00lb), 1 piece of teriyaki ($ 20.00lb), and 2 sticks of jalapeño/​cheddar pepperoni ($ 1.25 per piece). I was a little shocked that it ended up costing $ 10.50 for a very small amount of product, but I had heard very good things, and went along with it. Paid, got into my car, tore off a piece of the «teriyaki» jerky… bland. No flavor at all, besides it tasting like meat. Either it was a bad batch, or the employee gave me the wrong piece. ³⁄₁₀ rating.
Then tore off a piece of the peppered jerky, it looked, and smelt super promising. Again, very bland. Pepper was good though, but the meat itself has virtually no flavor, besides meat. ⁴⁄₁₀ rating. Lastly we moved onto the jalapeño/​cheddar pepperoni. As the record spins it was quite bland. The cheddar flavor was no where to be tasted, same with the jalapeño. It was only noticed because we saw a green chunk.
As I stated, could have been a bad batch. I’ll give it another go in a month or so. I hope it’s better next time.

This place is a little overwhelming… meat, meat, and more meat!!! Love that this place. has hard to find options and great quality.
Go here for:
1. Sausages… they have the largest selection I’ve ever seen Be adventurous!
2. Pre-​marinated meat: a great assortment of all kinds of protein ready to go on the BBQ. Love the short ribs.
3. Proper cuts of all other meats and butchers that can do custom cuts for you. This is imperative with some recipes.
4. Hard to find items: lamb racks, crown roasts, braunschweiger…
5. If you are a hunter they will also dress and prep your meat.
Make sure you grab a number the minute you walk in. Don’t despair if it looks like it will be a wait… it actually goes quickly and they are very efficient. Make sure you window shop properly and ask lots of questions. (They will even give you cooking instructions if you need them.)
TIP: Make sure to buy holiday meat early!!! It is insanely busy around holidays.
This is the best meat market in Portland. Enjoy and be prepared to pay a little more than the grocery store.

Wow! We came here before 9:00 a.m. to get some goodies for a family holiday dinner. There was someone directing traffic in their parking lot and a line at the door. People really like this place.
Go take a number as soon as you get there. The line moves fast! The staff is ready to rumble and efficient. They are also very helpful and friendly.
We got smoked pork chops (already sampled — DEE-​licious!!) a smoked turkey and some of their sugar smoked bacon.
If you like meat in all of its forms, you will love this place. Red meat, white meat (pork and chicken) and everything in between is temptingly arrayed behind glass. The prime rib looked beautiful and so fresh. Prices are average to high but I don’t mind paying up for quality products. There are lots of sausages, weenies, and marinated goodies. They also sell a variety of bottled sauces, horseradish, sauerkraut, and breads.
The place is very clean. We will return sometime when the holiday rush is over to try some other tasties. Wonder if it’s always this busy? I love that it is a local business and Portland mainstay.

Meat you are my friend, and close friends with my belly as well. I have heard quite a bit about Gartner’s from my brother, his girlfriend and I’ve past by a few times with my roommate and she’s spoken about how good the place is. Why had I never gone? There’s almost always a line to get in.
We were heading over to IKEA and Gartner’s is on the way and as Unilocal would have it, they were open for a half hour longer. NO LINE! Wow, there’s bacon front and center, and more bacon, and oooh look more bacon! Right by some mastodon sized smoked turkey legs. We should have gotten one. Marinated meats, pork, flank steaks, skirt steak, tri tip, pork chops, ribs galore, chicken breasts, cold cuts, amazing pastrami, head cheese, hot dogs, sausages, salami and I think you get the picture. You can get the sauce they are known for in big olé bottles and spices, rubs and all the accompaniments for a smoker or Traeger. The staff was great and was ready for us as soon as we entered. I guess it pays to wait til the end of the day.
BEEF. The huge sign that you can’t miss. I think that alone would scare off a hipster or veghead. The prices are reasonable and I can’t wait to try out the marinated chicken we got and the inferno red hots. Fire up the grill, it’s time to eat some incredible meat!
Oh meat, glorious meat, please don’t ever let me stray from you. With places like Gartner’s I won’t ever have think about it. Enjoy the meat!
