Kolaches in Portland? Yep! We offer Texas style kolaches featuring NW favs like Nutella, Otto’s and Old Country Sausage Company sausages, Tillamook cheese and local beverages from Hot Lips, Batdorf&Bronson, Mount Hood Roasters and Portland Roasting Coffee. For those drawing a blank, kolaches are soft, sweet hand-​rolled buns stuffed with delicious fillings from sweet to savory, then baked to a golden yummy. One warning: they can become highly addicting, but worth every bite since we do our best to only use ingredients that fall in the local, organic and lowfat categories.

We do welcome large orders so please let us know if you’re interested and we will do our best to make it happen for ya.

History

Established in 2009.

we easily fell in love with Portland and five weeks later, uhaul packed with only select possessions that would fit, we headed towards our newly found paradise… three years and many kolache buns later we are happily situated in our new nest in the nw as the happy sparrows :)

Czech food I’ve yet to try, so stopped by for delicious kolache. Figured it would be similar to piroshki but found a vegan option available, which is nice. Mellow milk tea wasn’t as sweet and warmed my body after being soaked in a rain. I chose poppyseed kolache (original and vegan) and happy bird (turkey maple and eggs). Overall very friendly service and a nice quaint café. Not a huge selection of pastry so simple to choose. Mostly orange and light blue color theme and has scrabble for anyone interested in playing

I went for the first time this morning after living down the street for years. It’s an adorable little café with bright colors and just enough seating. I ordered two savory kolaches to go — one with delicious tillamook cheddar and jalapeños called the Mexi Melt, and another with egg, cheddar and potato. The latter was the best, quickest, most wonderful breakfast I can imagine for $ 3 in this city. The former was exactly what it sounds like, cheesy spicy goodness in a perfect littleroll! If you pass this place on your commute, you’d be smart to stop in for one to go to get your day started off right in a rush. So delicious. So delicious. I have saved so much money on kolaches, not knowing what I didn’t know. Those days are gone, and I’m so excited to see the sweet owner for her warm service again in the morning!

They have spot on Dirty Chais here! It’s a very quiet atmosphere, perfect for reading, writing, or simply enjoying some alone time. It would also be a great place for a date – super cozy.
I was thrilled to see kolache here! It reminded me of summers when I would road trip from Houston to Austin. They are delicious, authentic, and make a great little grab-​n-​go breakfast.
I thoroughly enjoyed my savory egg, cheese, and sausage one. Never had a savory kolach before, but it was fantastic!
The staff is so friendly! They are good at asking me about my day and actually seeming like they care, not just in it for the tips. Good customer service.
This might become a regular spot for me :)

This place is home! It is also the only place in Portland where you can get kolaches… and they are so soft and delicious I dream about them. Lots of creative fusion favors, great standby options that are there everyday. The coffee drinks are made to order and it is my favorite chai in the city– as spicy or sweet as you want it! What really brings me back is the LOVE and WARMTH of this place! Owners are always there, so sweet, open and caring! One of the last places I know of that feels like Cheers… only with PDX hipster charm and damn good coffee, and the melt in your mouth goodness those sweet sweet filled buns (Kolaches). Love the Happy Sparrow!

Happy Sparrow is the very definition of cozy and welcoming. Tucked away in a little cottage, it’s comfy but has plenty of space — it’s bigger than it looks from the outside! There are two big rooms with cute little seating nooks in both, and a fireplace to boot. I wouldn’t hesitate to while away a whole autumn afternoon here, nursing a coffee and nomming a kolache or seven.
I recently came in early on a weekday morning and was greeted by the friendliest barista/​kolache purveyor ever. I got an «all you need» smoothie, which was full of greens but tasted much better than plain ol’ kale, a vegan kolache, and, naturally, some French press coffee. Everything came out promptly and the coffee was served in a big round cup, with a cute little pot of cream all to myself. Positively delightful.
The barista seemed to know a couple of «the regulars» and the atmosphere was just so warm and inviting, I could see myself making this place a regular haunt. If you’re in the mood to curl up in a big sweater and treat yourself, I highly recommend this place!

DELISH! I never knew what kolashes were until The Happy Sparrow and wow… I love. It’s the perfect guilty pleasure breakfast snack that feels just a smidge better than eating a donut. Sweet or savory, I always get a few of each to satisfy my pallet.

Attention freelancers: This is the perfect place to have a quiet, productive morning. Air conditioning, great snacks (try my recent favorite — the date smoothie), and lots of great places to set up shop and plow out some work. I got more done here in a couple hours than I have all week. Try it out!

I love Happy Sparrow! The moment you walk in, you’re genuinely and cheerfully greeted by the attentive owners, as well as their display case boasting an impressive kolache selection (that is, when they haven’t run out of some customer favorites — get there early on the weekends!).
I haven’t met a kolache I haven’t liked, and their rotating special kolache (currently pastrami with melted mozzarella) keeps my taste buds on their toes… If tongues had toes. My favorite kolache go-​to is the Texas Hot Link — a happy combination of a Texas Hot Link, cheddar, and jalapeño for a little kick; but the Potato Cheeser and the Bacon Nutella are also strong contenders. For vegans, they have a sweet and delicious cinnamon apple strudel kolache.
Coffee-​wise, I recommend pairing their kolaches with a strong Vietnamese coffee (can also be served iced). Their regular house coffee is a bit weak, but the other ‘fancier’ coffee, chai, and tea drinks are robust and flavorful.
The Houston-​transplant owners are very friendly, informative, and genuinely interested in providing great customer service and an overall experience. The laidback ambience they created with Happy Sparrow is just as cheerful and adorable as the namesake. There is outdoor seating on the sidewalk, but inside, the café offers colorful murals, paintings, and other sparrow-​related artwork, as well as plentiful outlets, upbeat music, and comfortable, homey seating. Also, Happy Sparrow is a family-​friendly spot. There are games, toys, magazines, books, and a changing table in their clean and spacious bathroom.
Go visit Happy Sparrow and experience flavor-​happiness in a bun!

Omg kolaches!!! I used to eat these delicious Czech pastries everyday growing up in Houston, Tx.
Outside of Houston, Texas it’s really hard to find kolaches. The owners are from Houston! And I have to say I love everything about this place. It’s super cute inside, relaxing, good music, the owners are friendly AND the kolaches are delicious!
I recommend: Texas hot link kolache (jalapeño is perfect), bacon Nutella and lil smokie kolaches.

I love Happy Sparrow! The Nutella hazelnut kolaches and the strawberry love kolaches are my favorite. The Czech poppyseed is a close third. They have a wide variety of drink options too, from coffee to smoothies. I love their peppermint mocha. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and coffee flavor.
Mary and Linda are always so nice. They treat everyone who walks through their door like friends.

Finally after two unsuccessful attempts, I finally read the timings correctly and manage to make it to this café when its open. The owner is extremely nice, and does a great job of describing what a Kolache is, and explaining the different types! It was a tough choice between the strawberry and cream chesse, the nutella and the poppy seed, but I went for the strawberry/​cream cheese combo, and it was delicious. Special shout out to their Vietnamese french press coffee, very tasty and refreshing indeed. Will be back to try out the other kolaches!

I’m kind of in love with this little café, and it doesn’t have much to do with what they serve. The vegan kolach is good: an oily hunk of bread stuffed with crisp veggies and a pleasant plum sauce. I also had tea, which was good, but not atypically so.
Happy Sparrow is just a pleasant place to be, though. I think it must be operated by an interior decorator and/​or neat freak. Everything seems deliberated over, the wood benches and chairs are attractive against the multi-​colored walls. Even behind the counter, every ingredient and cooking implement seems clean and in its proper place. There’s a sense of order, creativity, and love in this space. That makes it a really fun place to read, study, or work.
Other reviews use the words adorable and cute. Happy Sparrow is, though not in a kitschy way, cluttered with baubles and tchotchkes and exuding nostalgia for a past none of us have lived. It’s a unique space that should be experienced and enjoyed.
The music IS a bit loud for me, but maybe that varies, or maybe it won’t bother everyone.

NICE. It counts for a lot. And while Happy Sparrow serves up really yummy kolaches, what sets them apart from so many other places is just how nice and friendly they are.
When you walk into a place and are instantly hit with a warmth and friendliness that makes you feel welcome and happy, it’s a special place. Happy Sparrow is such a place.
I had never tried kolaches before. They are AWESOME! From the savory to the sweet fillings, they were all so tasty. But the friendliness and generosity of the people behind the counter is what really doubles the experience. Lots of places make good pastries/​coffee/​food, but not nearly as many get the friendly/​warm/​inviting part figured out.

Kolaches! Oh how I have missed these tiny bundles of joy. Kolaches are a nice portable breakfast that can be filled with an endless number of combos.
This place was a complete joy to find, thanks Unilocal.So in my search to find things in portland I found the happy sparrow. The spot is a nice corner lot on SE Belmont. There are 2 small tables outside when the weather plays nice. Up the steps and order at the counter. The spot is cozy with maybe 8 tables and 6 bar stools that line the front window. The owners are super friendly and won’t hesitate to talk Texas with me or explain how they got started.
The tiny bundles… warm and tasty. They have ‘em filled with savory combos like egg, bacon, & cheese or sausage links, jalapeños and cheese. All of which are worth a try since for breakfast one person should have at least 2. Maybe you want one sweet one, then do it! There is one with hazelnut and chocolate that is callin my name as I type. The dough is soft and not super filling which is a big plus.
Only one problem… it’s not on my way to work!

Cutest little café I’ve seen. I loved all the decoration and the owners are the sweetest people. I came in around noon and was really disappointed to see only a few Kolaches left. They said they do sell out early usually but the good thing was they were making more so we got some first and stayed around to chat and waited for the fresh hot ones. The freshly baked ones were definitely the best, which is probably why they ran out. My friends and I got quite a few different flavors and I liked them all. Each one was different and I loved the soft and chewy bread. My favorite was a breakfast version with egg, cheese, and potatoes and second favorite was the hazelnut Nutella for my sweet tooth. Fresh press coffee was great too.
As much as I liked the Kolaches, I don’t think I’d drive out again just to come here. If I’m in the area though I’d definitely drop by.

As the folks from the Dallas/​Fort Worth area know, you either head to West, Tx or up to the Muenster or Gainesville area for our Kolache fix. My new Portland people don’t have a lot of experience with these tasty treats.
Kolaches are Czech in origin and West, Tx is the best place to enjoy them. The town was settled by the Czechs a long time ago. But being that this is my new home, I did a Unilocal search and found an inexpensive breakfast place called the Happy Sparrow Café. I didn’t realize it was a kolache place until I got there. Lucky me.
The owner is from Texas and went to the University of Texas. She greets everyone with «Hello Friend». The café is a pleasant little place with Jack Johnson music piped in, art work on the walls and board games on the mantle place for anyone to play. Magazines and local newspapers are also around for you to sit and enjoy your morning at a slow pace.
I got myself two kolaches. Beef and cheese and one called a Meximelt (Jalapenos and Tillamook cheddar) They were a bit smaller than I am used to and all the kolaches were in the $ 2.50– 2.95 range which is a bit more than I am used to paying for them. They were good though. The beef and cheese was with beef sausage and cheddar. I also got myself some hot chocolate and that was $ 3.25 and worth it. It was smooth and warmed me up although it could have been a bit hotter. Creamy and with some mini marshmallows and a sprinkle of chocolate powder, it was great.
I can easily see myself going back there, and they cater or deliver as well. Not sure how far they will travel though. They have sweet and savory options for your breakfast or brunch. Do seek out this place, it’s a much better alternative to doughnuts in the mornings.
