Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels

Bagels bagels and bagels. Holy cow this was a good shop to come to foster. Bagel breakfast is Delicious. My only bother is that sometimes they forget my ingredients on the bagel I just ordered. For example: everything bagel, soy sausage, egg, Swiss cheese and avocado. They take the order turn around and make the order and forget to put soy sausage on my bagel. What’s a girl to do with out her sausage?! Eat the tuna salad bagel?! Okay that’s actually really tasty too, you win. They also lose a star for smelling like gym socks from time to time. (The shop, not the bagel.) But, I eat here all the time so it doesn’t bother me that bad obviously. Thanks for the good times bagel boy.

I had this intense craving for bagel & lox last Wednesday. I remembered driving by this new storefront called Henry Higgins – decided to stop by after running some errands since it’s nearby. Ordered a bagel & lox with veggies on the side, ½ dozen assorted bagels, and ½ lbs. plain cream cheese. When I got home, I discovered that they had forgotten the lox on my bagel and given me a side of salmon cream cheese instead – I was so incredibly disappointed. I would normally let it go, but $ 19.50 for 7 bagels and cream cheese wasn’t worth the cost. I called them and they were so nice about! I guess she misheard it as a bagel with cream cheese on the side not veggies on the side. Unfortunately, I had a guest over and couldn’t come back that same day, however, they left me a credit for it. I stopped by during my lunch break the following day to get my bagel & lox and had my craving satisfied. I was impressed with how kind they handled the mistake, great customer service.

This is has become a road tripping tradition with my girlfriend and me. Their bagels are awesome and make me slightly less sad that Kettleman’s is gone. I hope they get additional locations closer in, but it gives me a reason to head out on Foster.

Great bagels, and the perfect consistency too. The service was fantastic — they even let me try different cream cheeses before committing. The pumpernickel bagels was on point — delicious and perfect in every way. The only thing that I didn’t love is that they were out of lots of things by the time I came in, and it was just before 1pm on a Sunday, which is not that late. I also have to say that I didn’t love the cream cheeses. I am a huge fan of smoked salmon cream cheese, but they one they had (and they didn’t even have enough left to fill a tub) didn’t have much smoked salmon flavor. Maybe in the future, they can make it a bit more fishy :-) The scallion cream cheese too was just ok — had some flavor, but it didn’t really permeate the cream cheese the way I would’ve liked it to.

Giving this place 5 stars for proficiently executing the art of the bagel. I did not need a Groupon because I can afford to buy a bagel. Nobody was rude and nothing was spoiled or too salty. I will likely be back several times without a Groupon because once again it’s a bagel. Odds are you could walk here stark naked and manage to come up with the means for a bagel by the time you reached Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels.

I was excited to find a «real» bagel place nearby through Groupon and purchased the groupon to check it out. I was so offended by the rudeness of the staff that I won’t be returning.

Best bagels in Portland! Closest thing to a Jersey breakfast sandwich I could find. Order extra bacon! Also best price in town. My #1 choice for bagels in PDX.

Best god damn bagels in da city! Have been searching high and low for my go-​to bagel spot in Portland for 2.5 years. Finally stumbled upon these bagels back when they were sold off Grand at a small coffee shop. Was delight to discover they opened their own shop. I have a difficult time choosing anything other than their garlic bagel. My personal favorite is the breakfast sandwich with bacon, substitute sliced cheese for chive schmear. Oh, their dirty chi is also really really gr8

I have searched for thee and I have found you. $ 10 for an outstanding bagel & lox. My son described the cream cheese as «full» which he told me means great cream cheese. My lox were excellent with fresh red onion (I opted for no capers)
The bagels were fresh; soft and not chewy. A perfect soft crust.
Friendly service at the counter.
The atmosphere is truly low budget concrete floor and small tables but everything is very vlean. A place to come to for the bagel not the atmosphere

Best damn bagel I’ve had in Portland if not anywhere. I’ve never had a New York bagel or anything like that but I know something good when I eat it. I had the bacon egg and cheese on a garlic bagel and I was blown away. Crispy, chewy, tender, delicious. Absolutely the best thing I’ve found in SE for breakfast in a long time! Also the coffee is freaking delicious! I’m so happy.

Bagels are a tricky thing. You either make them in the way they do it in New York and New Jersey or you’re doing it wrong. It’s. That. Simple. Mass produced bagels never get it right and high end, super small rock like bagels are just trash. But somehow in Portland three places get it right with crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside rather large and wonderful donut shaped items. Bowery Bagels, Bagel Land (NE 42 and Fremont) and of course, Henry Higgins.
They all have the essential flavors, including my two favorites. Poppy and salt. All are large and all are reasonably priced. I guess it depends on where in town you live. But the rest of this review should be directed at HH Bagels.
I’ve heard of HH the entire time I’ve lived here but being that I don’t go to the farmers markets that often, I hadn’t gotten a chance to try them. They happened to be at the Montavilla one a few months ago and I got the opportunity. I know why everyone raves about them. One of my fellow reviewers said it best «Get in my face». These bagels are what I grew up either eating, selling or staring at when I grew up in the Garden State. I don’t know who Henry Higgins is, but his roots must have come from the northeast.
They have a brick and morter now in the southeast, which is close to where I live now and I needed to replenish my stash. So I got a half dozen and got some breakfast as well. A salt bagel loaded with cream cheese. They don’t skimp! There are plenty of breakfast options and they even have bialeys (a soft version of a bagel with onions in the middle, also strictly a New York City, lower east side item) and bagel dogs.
Many good choices to stuff yourself silly and if you’re lucky, day olds for $ 4. Being that I freeze my bagels, that can be a way to get them on the cheap occasionally, but I’m sure those disappear fast.
Just like with pizza, I’m very much a snob when it comes to food items that I grew up with, I have a certain way they should be in my mind and if they don’t live up to the bill, then it’s not worth the trip. Henry Higgins is so worth the trip, but if you’ve lived here for awhile, you ready know that.

This place is 100% worth checking out & I’m so glad I found a place with — room to sit or stand & wait for a to-​go order, great lattes & REAL bagels + amazing breakfast sandwiches! It’s all reasonable prices and the breakfast sandwich is so filling I usually eat half and then eat the other half a little later. They make the eggs & bacon right there too and it’s not pre-​cooked bacon that they weigh out like I’ve seen at some other local spots.
Would definitely recommend this for breakfast or lunch! Also, they have catering, espresso & to-​go.

The bagels are delicious, however the coffee side has been hit or miss. Today I ordered a double espresso with soy. I was asked, you mean a latte? And I clarified, no a double espresso with soy, or a macchiato. So what I got was two shots in a 16oz cup completely filled to the brim. But the time I walked up to the counter to get it, she was already turned around, laughing away with her coworker. Now I understand that this is a bagel shop, but I have ordered this on 3 separate occasions on Sundays without issue. But what’s the point of asking for clarification if you’re just going to give me a cup of steamed milk anyway?
Don’t get me wrong, amazingly fresh, delicious bagels. Maybe just off their game today.

I’m all about the everything bagel. This lil bagel shop in my hood is cranking out some serious bagel love. I like my bagels to have the right amount of chew and still have some flavor. The everything bagel just pops, if you add some scallion cream cheese then you have my go to order. Sometimes I feel special and get one with egg, sausage, and cheese!
There is always quite the assortment of flavors in the glass case, even a bagel dog. Today there was even a pumpkin bagel since pumpkin is everywhere at the moment. This place has you covered for your office as well since they have larger orders of bagels and tubs of cream cheese. Coffee… check, juice… check, blueberry bagel… check, and even some mighty fine looking muffins and sweets. I haven’t made it in to try a lunch sandwich but I’ve peered in through the windows (not stalker like at all) and they look tasty.
Best thing about this place is they open at 6:30am! So you can stop on your way to work and pick up that coffee and bagel to start your day right.

I was recommended here by a friend and tried to call multiple times to place an order. Their website suggests calling ahead if you have a larger order. However nobody answered or called me back after I left a message. It’s unfortunate.
The review above was one star based off customer service and I think I was just feeling hangry that day craving the Reuben. I have since visited and enjoyed the Reuben on a pumpernickel bagel. It was excellent and I retract my earlier statement.
It would be a five star if only they would answer the phone but other than that it is a must visit if your in the area.

I can get my lattes here now too, sweet! The gals who seem to be in charge are always smiling and nice.
I love these bagels and am so glad this opened in my hood. I’m from the east coast and had difficulty finding a good bagel here, and now I can walk to get em :) my husband still misses a New York bagel, but for PDX, these are pretty good! Sometimes there’s a bit too much cream cheese on the bagel, but they’re yummy!!!

I. Love. These. Damn. Bagels.
For a couple of years, I was following these fine doughmasters around at pop-​ups (like on weekends at Hogan’s Goat pizza) and farmer’s markets. Now I can wrangle them more consistently, yes!
Texture: great.
Size: big.
Schmears: get in my face.
Variety: excellent.
These are serious bagels, y’all. They hold up well for sandwiches. I like to grab a bag of day-​olds, pop ‘em in the freezer, and I’ve got bagel love for breakfast lined up for a week. Congrats to them for the brick and mortar home; hope to see more of their product in area coffee shops and cafes, too. Bagel on!

My husband and I are what you might call bagel aficionados. Okay, we are obsessed. Mostly because my husband is from New York and we just moved from California where the bagels are less than satisfactory.
He got the bagel egg sandwich with bacon, and I got an everything bagel, toasted with cream cheese.
The bagels here are incredibly dense yet soft, with the familiar chewy exterior you get only from a properly boiled bagel. The only thing really missing was the puffiness of the bagels. The smaller the hole in the middle, the better. Overall, my husband gave it a «not bad at all», which is high praise coming from such a bagel snob. I would say that they are some of the best bagels you can find on the west coast.
I also bought a bag of day old hearty grain bagels (8 bagels for $ 4, I’m in) and some plain and jalapeño cream cheese. The cream cheese is really delicious as well.
The biggest thing lacking was outdoor seating! I’d love to bring my pup and sit outside.

Wow, great bagels for the Portland bagel scene, but please invest in an exhaust fan for your new space. The smell coming off your induction burners made us have to get our food to go.
Great food, great service but serious lack of effort [and city code violation?] for a food storefront!
