Hertz Rent A Car

I rent cars regularly and this is the only facility I have ever dealt with who cannot even get a simple reservation correct. This is the third time in 2 weeks they have screwed up my reservation and cost me valuable time en route to a meeting. I have used Avis at PDX for years without much trouble. I am going back to them.

Thank you Unilocal for listening as Hertz won’t. I am walking through the airport crying. I rented a huge car for a day with a huge gas tank. I returned the car, expecting to be charged some for gas but not $ 39. The needle of the gage was slightly to the left of the full line. At $ 10 per gallon, they say the least they can charge me was ⁷⁄₈ of a tank. The checkout receipt does not have a phone number on it. I went to the main desk area of Hertz. The desk staff said the manager would not come out to talk to me and there was nothing they could do.
You know — There are things that are just wrong. This is just wrong.
I know it costs $ 7 to fill the tank up from where I had left it as I had just filled it up from the same point. I filled it up but Then got lost finding my way to the airport. Someone is making a huge profit, not by their labor but by taking advantage of others. Whoever this is at Hertz — I trust in some way — you will change your ways.
Well — I wrote the review a few hours ago. I am now home. On my plane ride home and in the airport I have shared my experience with 5 people. Hertz takes advantage of people. They know they have to get on a plane so … they can’t complain. I have the receipt for the gas that I bought that filled up the tank that cost the $ 7. The more I think about this, the more if makes me fear for humanity. It does. It is wrong.

The service was great. Hamaz was very attentive. I needed a larger car and they took care of it for me quickly.

PDX Hertz Rentals are as easy as it gets, follow signs to Rental Cars, take elevator to 1^st floor, read the Hertz Gold board (or the emil I receive,) walk to car, drive to gate, show DL and off ya go. Love it wish more airports had on-​site like this vs. taking a bus.

Walked in my car was ready, I asked for an upgrade and it only took about 60 seconds more to give me a full size SUV for a few dollars more.

Absolutely terrible. Over charged for several things we didn’t need or want. After asked they only removed one charge and said the other was required when it wasn’t. When I asked to speak with the manager he lied and said there was no manager on duty I called in front of him and the manager answered and came out to talk to us.
Took a look at my bill today and it it was at around 1000 when it should have been 425 hold on my card. Now they won’t answer my calls. I called customer care and they were just as bad saying they can’t help me and that I need to go through the store. After telling her that the store is not answering or returning my call she said oh well I can’t help you. When I asked to speak to her supervisor she forwarded me back to the store basically hanging up on me. At this point I want to speak with the area manager. I am a manager in customer service myself and I have never dealt with such poor service.

Hertz often advertises a hassle-​free experience for car rentals. I dispute that.
This location charged me for minimum insurance coverage when I asked for none, but lucky I caught that before I left. Additionally, when I returned the car, they said that the tank was «not full» (filling up at Burnside bridge in Portland was apparently not close enough) so I drove to the closest gas station (a 7 – 11) and filled up exactly $ 1.09 USD of gas. What a waste of my time — they were going to chare me $ 14.86 USD to «fil up» the gas tank otherwise.
As for being able to take the car on the road right away… well please adjust the mirrors so they’re not pointing at the ground. I’m guessing the Hertz rental staff parked it with the help of the mirrors but didn’t readjust them afterwards.
The 2015 Toyota Yaris (CE trim level) that I rented had a misaligned bumper when I rented it. I filled in a form detailing the damage already existing on the car (the gate lady didn’t seem interested at all and was trying to rush me out so the next car could leave). Fortunely, I had no difficulty returning it.
I had asked if there were other cars in the same group that were available — they said they only had Toyota Yaris available. Disappointed I didn’t get to try a Ford Fiesta or Mazda2 which I saw plenty of when I returned the car. Also of note, the Yaris didn’t have keyless entry nor a tachometer.

I booked an economy car through AAA at a great rate. Check in and out went very smoothly. Like all car rental places they tried to upsell me on the car, insurance, prepaid gas etc. But I stuck with what I purchased online.
We had a fun and tiny Chevy Spark for less then $ 40 for two days. Can’t beat that! It got 32 miles per gallon.
We will use Hertz again when we return.

Too easy… out of the airport and right into the car rental area, not so easy with other rental agencies for PDX.
If I had one concern it was that it was tough to find the Gold Member area to see if there were any other car options available. Other than that, everyone was pleasant and helpful and the car was clean and ready to go.

I am a Hertz # 1 Gold member (have been for several years) and I have not had any issues with Hertz in Portland. One of the things that’s most confusing, however, is what to do if you notice damage on the car. I’ve found out that you can drive straight to the gate area, and that you have to be firm about wanting damage noted. They’ll try to tell you that it’s not a problem, however, if I’ve learned anything from Christopher Elliott (
) — it’s to insist on documentation.
I also received a car with NeverLost even though I did not request it, and was not charged extra for it. Return process was fairly efficient, although the layout of the garage itself is Byzantine and confusing at best.

We’ve used this Hertz before on trips to Portland and have never had issues. To include one trip where we upgraded our vehicle to a small SUV for a reasonable amount.
I understand this time we were going during the holidays and to expect differently. On our end, it was our fault that we booked only a few weeks before our arrival (Christmas Eve) and were ending up with the rental of a Corolla for about $ 450 for the 5 days. Outrageous but didn’t have much choice looking at other rental places.
When we arrived on Christmas Eve, there was no line, we were helped right away and all was going great. The man who was helping us was friendly and helpful. My boyfriend asked while we were there if there were any SUV’s available and what the upgrade would cost us. The man helping us said he had a Ford F-​150 available, which was an upgrade above the SUV. He made it sound like we were paying $ 70 a day for our current vehicle and for the truck it would be $ 75 a day, making it sound like it would only be $ 5 a day extra. I was about ready to agree, but my boyfriend said that he would like to see the total estimate to see the difference. Thank goodness he did. The hertz employee prints out the estimate for the Ford F-​150 and it was for $ 850+, double what we were paying. Certainly not $ 5 a day additional. We told him no, that we would stick with what we reserved.
Then he became very curt and rude from there on out for the rest of the transaction. I turned down insurance to cover the car because I have amazing insurance that will cover the rental as well, and he was rude asking then if I take full responsibility for the car. Once we paid he didn’t even tell us where to go find the car or what would be needed to get out of the gated area. Luckily I knew since I had been there prior.
He made what should have been an easy experience, one with a bad taste in my mouth after he clearly tried to get us to agree to an upgrade over than what we had been inquiring about for double the price but making it seem like it wasn’t. So dishonest. We travel to Portland frequently to see family and we will now be using any company but Hertz.

With only one person working, the line was very long. After waiting twenty minutes, the guy told us there were three kiosks. Why not say this from the beginning? After thirty plus minutes, the tried to sell us more insurance even though I’d already purchased it. Then he says, «I don’t know why people don’t read the fine print. Everything is in there. You should read the fine print. It’s extra money for an extra driver.» I did read it. We were only trying to decide if we wanted to do it. The guy was a total jerk rolling his eyes and scoffing. I will never use Hertz again.

for a much lower price than what Hertz quoted. After a very long wait, I was helped by Svetlana at the desk. As part of the standard check out procedure I was asked if I wanted insurance coverage. As you know, this is almost the same price as the rental itself, and I declined saying «no thanks». After verbally turning down the insurance, I was presented with what I thought were the normal check out papers. I signed and went on my way. Later I find out that I had signed an insurance agreement!!! Svetlana, unknowingly or knowingly, had tricked me into signing $ 300 in coverage that clearly I turned down. I was tricked because the price I saw was almost the same as the car rental I thought I was signing for.
Since then, Hertz corporate customer service told me there is nothing they can do and I have yet to get a call back from the PDX location after numerous voicemails.
I’m dumbfounded because I have never experienced such terrible customer service and outright trickery with any company, ever. Fool me once…

We are gold members with Hertz. We have been a loyal customer at the Martin Cadillac dealership Hertz location for years. Brian, Tim and Mendez make renting cars fun, easy and not time consuming. So we decided to stay loyal and use the Hertz rental car services at the Portland Airport location. That day, I learned that no good deed goes unpunished!
I booked the rental car online. It was the same price online for a SUV or a large size luxury car. Not knowing the amount of luggage we were going to have, I booked the large size luxury car.
Once, I figured out the amount of luggage we were carrying. I tried calling Hertz a few days before our trip to change our reservation to change the large lux car to a SUV. The airport Hertz phone rang and rang. No one answered. I called the main Hertz number but they referred me back to the Airport location. Again, I called the Airport location and again no one answered.
When we arrived at the Portland Hertz, the line was a mile long. The other car rental places like National, Avis and Enterprise had short, fast moving lines. My parents walked up to the counter at National, received a free upgrade on their rental car and were on their way within 10 – 15 minutes.
We, on the other hand, went to the Hertz Gold Members counter and met Earline who made the rental process a hair pulling experience. We were at Hertz for at least an hour waiting to hear if we could switch our luxury vehicle we requested to a larger vehicle. She seemed disinterested in helping us and my son said to me, «I think that lady hates you.» She finally returned with a response, that we would need to pay double the amount we paid for the large lux car. I found that price outrageous and a rip off. When we declined her offer, she said there is an extra charge per day for a spouse to drive the car. This place will try to nickel and dime you, make you wait in long lines, provide poor customer service and treat you in a condescending manner.

Waited in line for 1 hour and 50 minutes to rent a car which was already booked and paid for through Expedia. Only 1 person working at desk. Many people complaining and manager, Michael Tang, would only appear from behind the door occasionally, peek his head out, and then disappear. Horrible customer service. Since reservation was made online, Hertz knows your are stuck and can’t go elsewhere. Even long lines at their kiosks… which I wish I would have stood in line over there… even though 1 was broken. What a miserable time waiting… everyone complaining… tired from a flight. NEVER AGAIN WILL I USE HERTZ!

Oh, and once I did get a car, they sent you out to find the car in the garage. There was no attendant to talk to about dents and/​or dings on the car.

Hugely long line, two people working. Been here an hour. Frustrating.
Finally made it through the line, they have no cars. It’s 2:00pm. So now we wait some more. I thought Hertz was s professional organization but you can’t tell by this experience. It’s like they’ve never rented cars before.
Still waiting with quite a large group of people. No cars and no idea of when a car will be available. Of course our credit card has been charged so all we can do is wait.
Terrible business practice.
My recommendation is rent somewhere else.
It took us longer to get our rental car here at the Portland Airport than it did to fly here from LAX. They held us hostage for two hours then downgraded our reservation. So, let me reiterate… Don’t rent from PDX Hertz. They have no problem wasting your time.

This place is terrible!
I arrived on an 1130 AM flight with a 12:00pm car reservation. Arrived at Hertz counter and there were over 60 people in line. I waited one hour and ten minutes to get my car. It was total chaos.
They have three kiosks but no signs indicating if you can use them. Not one representative said to the line «hey we’re having technical difficulties» or some type of explanation as to why our wait was so long. I felt bad for a lot of the nice people waiting to get their cars.
Once I got my Hyundai Accent I immediately noticed how dirty the interior was. Filthy! On the highway it’s veering over at 65 mph. Not a safe car.
Left a message for hertz, but haven’t heard a thing.
Don’t rent from this company; this has been a really terrible experience and I fear caused a lot of frustration to nice people today.

Booked a bundle package through Expedia, getting a car from this Hertz. BIG MISTAKE.
The line was LONG and there were only TWO reps working behind the counter. And slowly, might I add. I mean, seriously? There are 3 kiosks where you pick up the phone and talk to a rep and you can actually see their face on the screen. I prefer personal service with a physical face in front of me, but because I didn’t want to wait in that horrible line, I had to resort to using the kiosk despite me being a germaphobe. It’s the same process, you’ll still get your car and you can pay for things by sliding your ID and Credit Card through the slot. The stupid thing is, there were like two employees standing around the kiosks to help customers in case they need assistance. Ummmm… why couldn’t these 2 employees work behind the counter to move the lines along instead of standing around being useless?
The car they gave me was this TINY red Chevy Spark. Where do I begin! The first thing I noticed — virtually no truck space. My luggage BARELY fit in it, leaving no room for anything else. The cigarette lighter plug DOES NOT work so I wasn’t able to charge my phone. Luckily, the USB port «works» and I was able to plug in my iPhone so I can use Google map. But it DOES NOT even charge the phone while plugged in. It BARELY keeps the phone alive for me to use. What the hell? The side mirrors are tiny triangular shapes — so small you can barely see traffic behind. Who the hell designed this car?! What else — oh yeah, it is SLOW. Engine is loud, has no power, and takes a long time to accelerate. The AC is also loud. Lastly, the lock and unlock on the key works only half the time. Doesn’t actually lock or unlock the doors. What’s the point?
I mean, it’s not like I expected a Mercedes but this is beyond cheap.
I’m pretty sure I’ll never rent from Hertz again!
MANAGEMENT: If you are reading this, I’d like to request partial refund/​credits for all the troubles I’ve had with the service and car.

We booked through Priceline, it was definitely a great deal… But the wait is unpleasant. Hertz was the only rental car company who’s line was wrapped around and past the line poles. I wonder if it’s because the awesome price? All the other rental car companies had maybe 2 – 3 people in line while hertz had about 18 people in line, no joke!
They only had 2 staff members at the counter helping customers, while their 3 computerized agents were out of order?!
Wait was about 45 minutes just to reach the counter. When we arrived at the counter it was another 20 minute wait because they didn’t have any cars available. The employee who assisted us, Adrian was really nice and helpful, despite the long line and frustrated customers she had been dealing with she had a smile on her face. If it wasn’t for her being so helpful I would have given a 1 star.
