Hines Siding & Remodeling

I manage major remodeling of Apartment complexes in Oregon. I employed Hines Siding and Remodeling for two apartment buildings. Their duties involved remove and replacement of siding, dry rot repair, and removal and replacement of all windows and exterior doors. I was generally happy with their workmanship and price, though they did not start or complete on time, and did not keep their full crew on site throughout the project. They also had a very long delay between completion of the siding project and painting. The wait was several months, and I had to insist forcefully that they get this job completed after two delays.
I then gave them two more contracts to complete. They were working in North Dakota and had to wait five months, until Feb, 2013 to begin these jobs, and we reluctantly agreed to wait. Just seven weeks before their start date, they sent a short note saying simply «good news for us, bad news for you. We bid on a LARGE job in North Dakota during the same time we were doing yours, and we’re taking it. We won’t be doing your job.» This left us in a difficult position, though I was able to find other contractors. I spent a great deal of time working with them on the details of this bid, and I was surprised after committing to a contract they bid on other jobs for the time they’ve already scheduled.
Based on my experience, if you use Hines Siding and Remodeling whether in Oregon or North Dakota, I would insist on contracts with significant non-​performance penalties, as their interpretation of integrity is, shall we say, an alternate view.
This is not to take away from their forman, Elder, and the crew themselves, who work hard to provide a good product in a timely fashion. It’s too bad that Mr. Lester Hines and his wife Rena don’t have the greatest credibility in my opinion.
