Hip Chicks Do Wine

The best experience t/​b hd here is just that — the experience of it all.
We were nt overly impressed w/​Hip wines. And, nooo, it’s NOT because we’re Californians. We found their wines t/​b either bland or on an extreme sugar high. No thank you — already there all by our own means.
I wouldn’t write Hip Chicks off tho. I’d definitely gv it another go… maybe nxt yr.

The wine wasn’t that good, and there were SO many fruit flies flying around. My friends and I had to cover our wine glasses while we were tasting and they were buzzing around our faces the whole time. A few even got into our wine. The service was also slow. Overall– not a great experience.

Great wines, especially the Zinfandel! There’s a good variety of whites/​reds and sweeter/​drier wines so there is something for everyone. The events are also a lot of fun!

If you’re from California, DO NOT COME HERE. The wine was not good. I might even say terrible. After the first sip of each taste, the wine tasted worse, and we ended up taking it like a shot.
It was on a list of the best wineries in Portland, and one of the only one open daily. Don’t be fooled — you’ll feel the sugar hangover set in before you walk out the door.
The girl working was really nice and knowledgeable about the wine, but that was the only redeeming feature.

Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Delicious labels. Haunted cellar? =) I’ll be back and often.

Very cool urban vibe in this fun winery in my neighborhood! The entrance is a bit off the beaten path in the back of a warehouse complex, but when you walk in the atmosphere is great, the wines were tasty (I liked some wines from styles I don’t typically enjoy), and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Definitely worth a stop in for a tasting, and maybe a bottle or two to take home.

The Viognier was complex, delightful and has caused me to adopt the saying «a glass of Viognier a day keeps the subpar at bay.» We also quite enjoyed the Drop Dead Red and Merlot. A great time was had by all discussing wine making with one of the owners. We’ll be back.

My mom and I came here for a girls afternoon. It was pleasant and the gals there were as well! Great wine and we had a good time.

Molly is awesome! She is super knowledgeable and delightful! We are enjoying the PDX urban wineries tour. My favorite is the belly button.

Went here during one of their wine tasting events and ended up getting two bottles! The wine is good, nothing extraordinary about it, but a pretty good deal. Try their alcohol infused chocolate, it’s to die for!

Out of the way and not worth the trip. Cordial hostess but wines are terrible. Unilocal wants me to write more so it is an actual review. Wines are really terrible. Maybe Hip Chicks need a new career.

After we walked and walked and walked the backstreets of some industrial neighborhood, we finally arrived at Hip Chicks.
It was a great spot out in the middle of nowhere.
The wine tasting was pretty cool and they had some cute gifts with their various graphics from their bottles. all very girly, all very cool.
Wines aren’t as memorable. but I don’t remember hating any either. However, when we leave a tasting with only a rosé, then that means nothing else blew my skirt up.

An urban tasting room? Awesome! We wanted to go wine tasting, but didn’t want to drive all the way out to Carlton or Hood River so it was nice that there was option in the city. The location wasn’t difficult to find, at the same time, it isn’t obvious if you aren’t looking for it. Walking in, there was a large party at a table in the center and around the corner was the tasting bar along with a couple smaller tables. I like that you didn’t have to stand around the counter waiting for them to pour the tasting, you could sit down at table to catch up with friends and the pouring came to you. I think we spend almost two hours there and our $ 7 flight of 6 wines became 8 wines. They did couple bonus pours… needless to say, the service was extremely friendly. Not the most amazing wine in the Willamette Valley but it was palatable. Ended up buying a bottle of a blush wine, I don’t typically like blush wine but it was delicious.

I’ll be the first one to tell you Hip Chicks Do Wine is NOT the BEST wine out there, but it is good, drinkable, and totally reasonable for their price points on the various wines.
The service is usually very friendly, and this location has a cool feel to it (being in an industrial area and all) though I prefer the Newberg location.
They often have events here which can be fun though a bit difficult to mingle at (likely the crowd and not the business’s fault).
I will continue my wine club membership here for the foreseeable future, as the perks are numerous and it’s always good to have wine on hand (makes a great last-​minute gift, you can rarely go wrong with wine as a gift).
I’d recommend checking this place out. As with all wines, some are for you and others aren’t. People on Unilocal absolutely love Panther Creek in McMinnville, for example. They primarily specialize in Pinot Noirs (not my fav) and I really just don’t care for them.
I say check it out for yourself and make an opinion — Hip Chicks is definitely worth a shot.

I thought the woman pouring was delightful, and I feel bad giving this winery 1 star because of her, but the truth is, the wine was not good. I think there are many lovely wineries in Portland, don’t waste your time/​money on this one.

Came in after seeing their tasting/​pairing event on PDX Pipeline a couple months back. We are still talking about the great tasting we had here! The staff was SUPER friendly and informative. Very patient with both of us and our questions, despite having a pretty full crowd in the winery. Bought 4 bottles of wine as we left with the 10% coupon from here — and wish I had joined the shipping club…
I can’t wait to return and get some more bottles. Maybe then I will be ready to sign up for the shipping club. Great wines, fun place to go and intimate venue for tasting. The set-​up of the place was welcoming and easy to navigate. Enjoyed the live music. Have tasted at other wineries, none of which have felt this easy to navigate the venue and take our time enjoying the wines, etc. The pairings were great too! Super fun and tasty foods (apps really). I would certainly recommend to friends and family that come to visit Portland. We came up from Salem and wish I found myself back here more often. Despite the difficulty in finding the place. :-)

God awful, wife spat saying tasted like «hippy armpit hair» (not sure how she knows). She said I’m too polite for having choked it down and smiling at them.
With so many great ones just an hour east I can’t imagine why to go here.

They are hip and friendly chicks indeed. But, the chicks don’t do wine all that well.
The tasting room is hip and a cool venue for tasting and for events. I checked them out for the wine and chocolate tasting event The Hip Chicks hosted on February 12^th and 13^th, 2011, featuring chocolates by Cocoa Velvet Chocolates.
To start we had a 2007 Sangiovese paired with a Lavender Earl Gray dark Chocolate. The wine on its own was nothing special. I had to have the chocolate with it to be able to sip and appreciate it. In fact, none of the wines wowed me and I couldn’t bring myself to buy a bottle or even a full glass of anything.
I noticed the pricing of the wines were not unreasonable at around $ 16.00 for the Sangiovese to $ 26.00 for a Malbec. I will spend that much for good wine on occasion. But these are just not that good.
I like the concept of having a cool tasting room here in the city that hosts fun and interesting events like the chocolate tasting event. I just hope the wine making part of their endeavor improves.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but shouldn’t a winery serve wine that’s at least somewhat drinkable? I spent $ 13 to try 9 of their varietals and none were worth a second look. I’m not a snob here, I enjoy all price levels of wines, but the reds were truly bitter and «off». The $ 13 Blush? I think Beringer makes a «white zin» that tastes exactly like this, and it’s $ 3.99.
Here’s the thing: I want them to do well because I support local businesses. Great concept, cute bottle labels, great website and logos… I love the name. It implies that they are able to compete with larger wineries. But great marketing is not enough for them to survive.
I hope they can get the help and expertise they need to produce some good wine. Part of running a business is realizing where your weaknesses lie, and then hiring good people to compensate for them.
Some good wine-​making advice is needed here, and stat.

Random winery tucked into a pretty quiet industrial space in SE, HCDW is pretty great, and oh-​so-​Portland. I mean come on… sippin’ on a chilled blanc within earshot of the Brooklyn Train Yard just a few blocks away? Love it.
We stopped in on a Sunday, just to check it out, after having their wines a few times around town (Portabello, various beer/​wine fests). Weren’t sure if anyone was in there at first. Hello? Anybody home? Then a bubbly gal hollered back and welcomed us warmly. It’s a pretty big space, and remnants of the previous evening’s events were still around. They’d had a very successful fundraiser the night before, to benefit a local school. I could envision one helluva a Unilocal party in their warehouse (wink, wink, Don B…),
They produce about a dozen wines, from cabernets to muscat, from only Oregon/​Washington grapes, in small batches (or whatever the wine-​specific word for that is), ranging from $ 16 to $ 20 per bottle. At the winery, you taste a flight of 6 for eight bucks. They hold ladies nights that sound pretty fun– a flight of wine, appetizers, music, vendors and mini-​massages for $ 15.
Very cool what they are doing, taking a different, fun approach to vino than any other wineries around here that I’ve been to at least. I’m certainly no wine expert, but I can verify I’ve liked all of their varieties I’ve tried so far, the whites especially. Check them out if you happen to come across their wines at a restaurant!
