Hong Kong Market

Great selection, and the staff were really helpful when we had questions. Prices are very reasonable, so we left with lots of sauces, soups, spices, noodles and produce, and wacky snacks (sesame-​coated tiny crabs?) — I’m gonna make my own tomyum, I think, now that I have everything I need except the shrimp. Big selection of sweets too.

The Hong Kong Market is close by and I come here for many of my basic grocery needs. The produce section is on the smaller side but everything is fresh and very reasonably priced.
There is candy. There are sauces. There are bottles and bags of spices. There are snack foods I am not familiar with, noodles, essentially everything you could want in an Asian grocery store, whether prepackaged or fresh. The tea selection is absolutely fabulous and it’s worth coming just for that. There are eating utensils, if you need Chinese-​style porcelain soup spoons. I don’t buy rice anywhere else anymore, this is the best selection and quality in town. White, brown, red, black, so much rice. I get it in ten pound bags because I can reasonably carry that much, but these are the small bags.
Prices cannot be beaten. Want a pound of coriander seeds? $ 3.75. This is what you’d pay for a little tiny 2.5oz jar at a big box store, if they even have coriander seeds. Ten pounds of rice? I paid $ 10.50.
The only issue I’ve ever had is that the produce section has no labels, which is a challenge for me because I’m not familiar with all of the stuff they carry, so sometimes trying something new is an adventure.

I came here and bought a 50lb bag of rice. 50LB… which lasted me half a year haha but I’m not the average eater. They had a lot of selection which was great, but what I found even more amazing was the amount of Taoist and Buddhist religious items. Statues of the fortune god, large shrines, Guang Yu, etc. There was also a number of herbal medicine that intrigued me.

This market is great, easy to get to and they have just about eerything I could want. I visited a couple other markets in Portland but I did not find some of the items I was looking for. They did stop selling their Rotissiree items which I was disappointed about.

A great place to shop for real authentic asian foods and at a cheap price! It did help knowing some Chinese though.

I would give this place ZERO stars if I could.
This place has terrible customer service. Even with my low expectations for this vile establishment, I couldn’t have made up what happened to me and my friend if I wanted to. We were followed throughout the store by a worker because he was afraid we might steal something. The aisles and organization of the store is atrocious. Dry goods items were placed in one corner of the many rooms and I can’t even begin to explain the layout — like a maze within a maze. We saw some kimchee bottles in a refrigerator that expired 2 months ago. We asked the owner where his single-​acting baking powder and pandan extract was located because there wasn’t a baking aisle to be found. He pointed to some yeast packages… Definitely not what I asked for. When we went up to pay, I realized the twenty dollar bill I had brought along had fallen out of my pocket somehow. We went through every aisle looking for it but it had mysteriously disappeared. Chucking it up to my stupidity, we ended up paying with credit card and went back to the car to look again to make sure I wasn’t accusing the owner of something he didn’t do. I went back into the store with my friend to make a last-​minute ditch effort search to no avail. When I asked the owner if he had seen a twenty dollar bill on the ground and if his worker who was following us had seen it, out came a slew of Chinese sentences I did not know. What I could pick up was that they were not kind words and he was yelling at us. His worker, who had mysteriously disappeared for a while, came out yelling at us in Chinese as well. Not surprisingly, that was my last visit to Hong Kong Market.
These people were so rude for no reason! I didn’t accuse them of anything. I simply asked if he or his worker had seen a twenty dollar bill lying around — because I had brought it in with me. No customers came in or out while we were there. I hate being cursed at – in ANY language — especially if I didn’t warrant such nastiness.
Please avoid this establishment if you can. Portland has become more Asian savvy and I am loving the changes that I see. There are other options for Asian markets around town if you want better service, better organization, and more variety. I only came here because it’s the Fourth of July and all the other Asian markets were closed. Veranda Market is opening up soon and I can’t wait! But for right now, Hakunam Asian Market (Khmer owned I think) is located on Forest Ave next to Saigon Restaurant. That would be my recommendation if you’re looking for southeastern Asian ingredients and fresh vegetables.

As good of a selection in Chinese goodies as it gets in Portland. They have snacks, frozen foods, veggies, teas, spices, seasonings, sauces, preserved stuff, Chinese meds, etc. It’s also cool how they bring some of the Chinatown flavour with their fresh crispy roast pork and bakery items (like egg tarts!!).

While I agree that it might be frustrating for non-​Chinese speaking customers to communicate with the employees, it is really one of the only options an Asian person has of finding something they want to use or try when cooking that cuisine in the area. I would say to just suck it up and browse the aisles. It may be an eye opening experience for some and for others it could be a hard to find treasure.

This store is the single worst customer experience I have had at any store, any time. I first called to see if they carried a certain type of flour and was scolded: «You come down and look.» I actually did — searching the poorly arranged product lines only to find they did not have what I was looking for. The second and final time I went in, I stumbled through the store to not find what I was looking for, waited over 5 minutes while a non-​paying customer chatted with the cashier about medical issues, and asked for a product (red pepper paste) the cashier was clueless about. Terrible service, miserable organization, limited products. Do not go here. Sun Oriental Market is more helpful, cleaner, and more convenient.

Sun Oriental is Korean owned, and this Hong Kong Market is Chinese owned oriental grocery store.
As for me, Japanese, I was shopping at both store, depends on what I need.
This shop definitely have better selection in produce like vegetables, and maybe noodles. The price is definitely better too. They are both located in Portland not far from each other, so I’d say for those asians in Maine shop at Sun Orientals definitely should try this store too.
