Joe’s Smoke Shop & Super Variety Store

Sorry, gotta disagree with all the reviews. I shopped here a few years ago and made it a point to avoid this place ever since this happened:
(Copied from another review site I write at): Okay, I have been treated rudely here before, but nothing terribly bad up until tonight. Usually its just making the transaction and that is all, not so much as a «hi», «how are you» or «have a good night» or anything. I am thinking especially of that one real tall guy who just is not real friendly. They aren’t very welcoming and I certainly started going there less and less as time went on.
However, I went tonight because Pauls was closed (missed it by 2 minutes). I went to get a 6 pack of gearys and chips. He rung them up and than I noticed I did not have enough cash so I said «On second thought I won’t get the chips» and oooooohhhh boy did things go real south after that! The man literally started dropping F bombs under his breath! Because apparently people do it all the time and he decided that he had had enough. He was so enraged that he did not hear the young gentleman next to him trying to tell him that it is quite simple to fix the problem. I heard him say «no no «. But he was PISSED and did not hear. My thoughts: WHATEVER it is your job! of course people do that shit (they decide on not buying something), it is normal! So he slammed the 6 pack on the cabinet, it was very scary, I did not feel comfortable as he rung it up again. I said I had a bag on me but for some reason he gave me one anyway, saying something and disrespecting my wishes (whats the point?)
As I left I said «won’t be shopping here again» as he CONTINUED to drop swears under his breath, turning to the kid next to him to rant about me deciding not to buy chips after they were rung up. I have worked at a register before, it is NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL and I was treated like shit for it! on a scale from 1 to 10 on annoyance factor, it is maybe a 1.5, trust me, even on a bad day, it is not that big of a deal!
Have your experiences at Joes sucked? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, go to Pauls or rite aid or ⁷⁄₁₁ if you agree with me! They don’t deserve our business. If enough college aged kids stop going, I think it could hurt them at least a bit, as a lot of kids go to get ales and snacks during the week.
Screw you Joes, I have been given the silent treatment, dealt with an unwelcoming atomsphere to long and continue to give you my money anyways, But I will NOT be sworn at and feel threatened over a freaking bag of chips! Not to toot my own horn, but I think I handled the situation pretty gracefully outside of a face I made for a brief second and maybe my comment at the end was not called for (won’t be shopping here anymore) but I personally think it was called for. You DON’T treat customers like that. For petty stuff like that.

Joe’s is in many ways a typical corner store with snacks, drinks, household supplies, smokes, beer and wine, a sandwich shop, magazines, and monthly parking. They have fairly expansive hours for a town that rolls up the sidewalks after about 6pm, and staff are helpful.
The snacks are standard convenience store stuff. Beer and wine are clearly where the bulk of sales come in and there’s quite a nice selection for a neighborhood convenience store. What makes Joe’s more awesome than I expected is that they have a bunch of lightbulbs, household cleaners, magazines, and the sine qua non of the overworked person who sometimes fails to hit the grocery store, cat food. It’s the cheap canned stuff, but if you’re out and can’t hit the regular store, it’ll do in a pinch. Or you can get a can of tuna, which is generally what I did in that situation.
The two real gems of this place are the parking and the magazine selection. This is, no kidding, the best place to get magazines in the area, whether you want porno, news, home design, cooking, music, fashion, subculture, art, cars, or guns & ammo, Joe’s has a quality selection. it’s dropped down a little in the last few years as fewer people buy print, but if you’re into magazines or do collage art, Joe’s is the place to go.
With the parking, I used to live right next to there and parked with them for a few years. While I’d describe it as overpriced for Maine, it’s still cheaper than most of the parking in town and they’re good about plowing.

I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped in here for a drink during an afternoon stroll. From the outside, I had expected a dirty, little packie shop.
It was actually very well-​lit inside, the shelves were stocked with a good variety of snacks and treats, and the floors and shelves were very clean. There is booze, of course, but it is appealingly separated from the majority of the store.
A great little place to grab a gallon of milk or a few little items if you don’t want to run to a full grocery store.

Joes, I will forever remember you for being so gentle yet assured about introducing love into my life in the form of Humpty Dumpty All-​Dressed chips.
Then you made me a sandwich. Or fifty. I have lost count. Some are divine (tuna melt), and some are just above average (meatball), but they always satisfy my hunger and my budget.

Great neighborhood store. They have (almost) every magazine you would ever want (including dirty ones), beverages of all types, and a decent deli. They also have various smoking materials but I am a non-​smoker and can’t tell if it is a good selection or not.

This is your typical corner «market». It’s a quick stop if you’re walking by. It has just a about anything you made need. Soda, beer, wine, snacks, and porn, they have it. I like to stop here for a turkey Italian while I’m working,

I can’t really think of anything wrong with Joe’s Smoke Shop. Open late, lots of things to drink, and various supplies and sundries.
I don’t think I’d get a sandwich here, but otherwise Joe’s is pretty much essential for downtown living… at least my variety.
