History

Established in 2011.

The Laurelhurst Café opened in March 2011 as a Lunch Dinner Place. Beginning in September, 2011, we expanded to Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Now in Autumn 2012, we have expanded again, offering hamburgers and breakfast plates, along with optional table service in the evenings.

I’ve been slacking for thirty years, and know what a good café is and isn’t. Free WiFi is mandatory, a house copy of the New York Times is a must.

Our food is made in house from scratch with a lot of love. You will be very surprised at how tasty the food is, how friendly the staff is, how clean the space is and how reasonable the prices are, you can afford to be a regular here, and that is what we’re looking for.

Again, love this place. The owner is quite a guy… very proud of his business and his staff, and super friendly to everyone in the neighborhood – whether you are a local street person or a paying customer or a person wanting a cup of joe and to just sit for a few hours.
Had the Brussel Sprout Hash – perfectly cooked eggs, amazing brussels, and everything just right. Great service, as always, from both the owner and the staff.
Well done… wish I lived closer so I could make this a lazy Sunday hang…

This morning we had a 20 minute wait for two simple breakfast sandwiches. They were bland and uninspired but still cost $ 7 apiece. This is the third time I’ve been let down by their food and service. I won’t try again.

Visiting Portland for the New Year Weekend and came across this hidden treasure.
Good food/​portions, price, service and cozy environment.

We came because it said it was pet friendly, and we wanted to get out of the cold with our dog and get some good coffee. Apparently it is only part friendly when people aren’t around. I felt slighted and misled as we drank our coffee in the cold.

Solid burger, although very small-​think Little Big Burger in size. I loved the way it was cooked to perfect medium. Im a blue collar guy and this burger was heading into frou-​frou land, but not quite there. Fries were good. Service was execllent. Overall quite nice really.

Don’t let the small setup trick you as the food at this café is delicious and well-​priced. Staff are friendly too. I recommend the North Tabor scrambled eggs with bacon and char grilled Brussel sprouts for breakfast.

Sad to say, we don’t go here anymore. The last time we were in there my sister and I were having a couple of bloody marys and the veggie plate. When my sister was halfway through her bloody mary she found a dark coarse curly hair in her drink. We’re praying it was one of the cook’s arm hairs, not something even more disgusting!
Annoyingly, our waitress was really not concerned about it. She kinda shrugged and knocked the veggie plate off the bill. The drink was the problem, why wouldn’t she comp that? (Oh yeah, because the veggies were, like, $ 4 and the drink was $ 8. :P)
So yeah, we’ve kinda dropped this place from our dog park trips.: (Sad, because besides the arm hair/​potential pube, they make a damn good cocktail.

I love the Laurelhurst Café. Friendly staff managed by a gracious, funny owner, Ken. On my first visit, I had their Daytripper burger… delicious– topped with mushrooms, caramelized onions and Swiss cheese. For breakfast, I’ve had equally appetizing experiences with the Denver scramble (ham, peppers) and the Whole Shebang breakfast sandwich (egg, bacon, arugula, sun-​dried tomato pesto, Tillamook cheddar– add avocado).
The food is perfect, the portions are plentiful and the price is reasonable. They have great coffee and unbelievable snickerdoodle cookies. Seriously, I would come here just for those cookies. Five stars!

Came here with a friend who was supposed to meet their friend also. Turns out the friend’s friend went to the market by mistake. So we split a few items before moving over there. Feeling both breakfast and lunch we went with:
Relished Turkey Sandwich — smoked turkey, cranberry-​kalamata relish, organic arugula, emmenthaler, ciabatta
Corned beef hash, eggs, toast, roasted potatoes
All fairly solid. They seem however understaffed. It took them a while to get us seated and then a while to get us the food. It is however an interesting place to people watch as the patrons are all over the place. Good for a concise breakfast/​lunch menu but make sure you have the time

It was alright, nothing special. It took them 30 minutes to make a few egg sandwiches.
Our server was really nice, but didn’t return to our table to check on us at all.
They have a couple of nice outdoor seating areas, but being on the corner of 47th and Burnside it gets pretty noisy.
They do have Bowery Bagels though! Prices were a little high. I thought for a $ 7 breakfast bagel I would have at least gotten some potatoes on the side.
Overall, I wouldn’t be against returning if a friend wanted to go, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

This a very unassuming place and has some really good reviews. When we arrived, the place looked deserted, but we decided to go ahead and go in. The waitress was very friendly. Since the weather was so nice we sat outside in a fenced in area.
I ordered the North Tabor scramble which came with the fried brussel sprouts. The sprouts were amazing, the toast was made with an excellent bread. The scramble itself had great flavor, but was a little lacking in the visual department. All in all very good.
By the time we left, there were 4 other tables filled with customers in the small outdoor seating area. The table seated immediately behind me brought in a large playful dog that kept rubbing up against me. I know this is Portland, but I’m still not that comfortable with non-​service dogs rubbing up against me while I’m eating in a restaurant. The wait staff seemed to know the family, and maybe I would have felt more comfortable if I had seen a «Pets Welcomed» sign.
Any way the food was good and if I’m in the neighborhood again, I’d go back again.

Wanted a somewhat traditional breakfast with eggs so I decided to come here. I ordered the Brussel Sprouts 2 Egg Hash. The Brussel sprouts are deep fried and have so much flavor and crunch, I ordered my eggs over easy and it was served on top of a bed of roasted potatoes. It also comes with a spicy sauce (sriracha like) that goes well on top of everything! The multigrain toast are buttery and perfected with blackberry jam. This is my definition of a perfect breakfast! Well balanced and filling. I highly recommend this dish.
The restaurant has a backyard patio area with Picnic tables. Great for a nice day!

There are MANY places to eat breakfast in Portland, so the competition is stiff. We wandered down to the Laurelhurst Café on a Sunday morning and it was pretty empty. It’s an old service station and I like the idea of that being recycled into something cute like this little restaurant. Unfortunately, either they don’t have heat or they didn’t have it on, because we were cold and had to keep our coats on all through our breakfast.
The breakfast was good, not mind-​blowing, or even all that memorable but it was good. I have been to places where I have to say that the breakfast was bad, but that isn’t the case here. The food was good. Not greasy, not overcooked. We had the French Toast. It was on Ciabatta, which means that the bread is not as sweet and airy as a Brioche or a Challah, and that makes it a little dry. But it was decent.
We also had the North Tabor Scramble. That was actually really good. Maybe that would pump my review up to a 3.5.
With a warm interior, this place would rate a 4. I’ll have to try it again and see if they got the heat fixed.

They missed getting a 5 star because of the over cooked, inedible potatoes.
The first impression was, «small place, not a lot of seating options.»
We were helped quick enough, but after that, it’s a help-​your-​self to everything you will need at your table, from napkins and silverware to cream, salt, pepper and hot sauces if you are so inclined. Friendly, helpful, and blue hair is dominant among the staff, not the elderly women who tried to do their own hair and failed, but by intent with young trendy women.
This is a small place and they seem to do a lot of to-​go orders. My count was 34 could be seated and you might bump elbows, plus two small wooden tables outside.
Food was very good with the one exception mentioned in the opening. The pesto on my Shebang sandwich was excellent. Portions are not such that you’ll end up taking something home, but the prices are comparable so you won’t feel cheated.
Lots of traffic through the door while we were there, obviously a popular eatery.
As for those dark, over cooked spuds, it was our dinning partner who opted not to eat them. In all likelihood I would have given them more of a try if they’d been served to me, just because I don’t mind so much, but, I didn’t try them either now did I?

After 163 reviews on this place what else that’s amazing about the Laurelhurst Café can one say? Well, I did find out one little factoid that most of my Unilocal elite missed. This place was a gas station at one time. Now it’s a cool little breakfast place that’s not overhyped so you wait in a three hour line on the weekends every. single. weekend. They do serve lunch and dinner as well.
All we have are two people, Ken, the owner and the lovely tattooed woman who pretty much did everything but cook. Both very friendly and Ken and I chatted spices on breakfast potatoes and eggs. Works for me.
The hot chocolate and my food hit the spot. All great and the fresh blackberry jam was really good! More chatting with Ken about spices and even a spice shop I didn’t know about. That could be a nice little bonus if they have what I’m looking for.
The food is inexpensive and the hospitality is excellent. Can’t go wrong with that. Stop here when you have a chance.

I’m seriously considering knocking one star off of all ratings I’ve given to other restaurants so far. Laurelhurst Café just blows everything else out of the water. After about a thousand Subway sandwiches over the course of two years in grad school, I’d completely started to hate sandwiches. So when I was hungry and the only option near me was a sandwich place with a name like Laurelhurst, I wasn’t too happy, but decided to try it anyway. I ordered the weird-​sounding Sprout sandwich and hoped for the best.
And boy, that first bite into the sandwich was the most beautiful surprise of my life. Crunchy deep-​fried brussel sprouts, sun-​dried tomatoes, horseradish aioli and amazing ciabatta bread all came together to create deliciousness. The salad that came along was just as good. Hats off to the creativity that went into creating this recipe.
As if the food is not good enough, they have nice couches, great music (Cat Stevens!) playing and good wi-​fi. It’s just perfect.
Love this place, highly recommend, especially to vegetarians/​vegans.
