Established in 2009.

Le Cookie Monkey was created from a long time passion of baking and cooking. After 15 years of restaurant/bakery work, pastry chef/founder Amber Witherow (formerly Amber Darrington) decided it was time to fulfill her dream to spread her love of food and eating to everyone! It has been a creation in process and now it’s a reality. The goal is to give customers the freshest product possible. All cookies and most cakes are baked the day of your order. No mixes are ever used… it’s the real deal.

The moment that I stepped foot in Le Cookie Monkey for the first time my senses were overwhelmed with the scents of sweetness and the warmth of feeling that reminded me of a bygone era. An era where a family’s life revolved around a home kitchen, staffed by one person. The Grande Dame of that kitchen, mom of course, made that part of my life a wonderful respite from the troubles that any day brought. This is the ambiance that is captured at Le Cookie Monkey.

Born and raised in Portland, since the 1980’s I have worked in other business endeavors. Now that I am the owner of Le Cookie Monkey (effective March 1, 2015), I couldn’t be a happier man! The Founder and prior owner, Amber Witherow, built Le Cookie Monkey from scratch, just like all of our sweet confections are made. I intend to retain the tradition of scratch baking that has made Le Cookie Monkey a successful business. All of Amber’s recipes are in hand and the same wonderful staff will remain in place to serve you.

Le cookie Monkey put together the most perfect Hello Kitty Darth Vader cake we’d ever seen for an office birthday party. It was red velvet, the frosting just the right amount of sweet but not too sweet. We also got an assortment of cookies to share and they were delicious with a variety sure enough to please everyone.

I love Le Cookie Monkey! I ordered a birthday cake for my son’s 5^th birthday this past summer and it was great! I let them know that I wanted his cake to go along with the jungle theme for his party and it did not disappoint. It came out so cute! I believe it was the devil’s food cake flavor with chocolate mousse filling and it was so delicious! Excellent flavor, not overly sweet it was just right. I can’t remember the exact cost of the cake but it was fair in my eyes. I certainly recommend!

I called in and ordered a cake tasting box to go from Le Cookie Monkey. The staff was friendly, everything was ready on time.
The flavors I ordered were Hazelnut, Spice (no apples), Devils Food, and Marble.
The Fillings were Chocolate Mouse, Caramel Mouse, Cream Cheese Mouse, and German Chocolate (that coconut mixture).
The Frosting that was included was Italian Butter Cream.
Overall I wasn’t that impressed. The flavors were much more tame and reigned in than I had expected both in the cakes and fillings. The cakes were texturally dense; a combination of lots of oil while also being very dry.
They were good nothing I couldn’t recreate at home.

Had a rather unusual experience with this place. I ordered the cake online for my son’s third birthday, and planned on picking it up the day before. Then they emailed me saying they’re closed on Mondays (why could I arrange pickup on their site then?) and would I like to pick it up on Tuesday. I said okay, I’d be there at 9 am to get it.
So me and birthday boy get up early on his big day, hop on a bus, walk in the cold and rain to this shop. And they ask me what time my event is. I say well. There is no event. We weren’t having a party or anything. Good thing! Because they didn’t have my cake.
They wouldn’t have it until that afternoon, and they’d deliver it then, free of charge. Okay. Sounds good. Just wish they would’ve maybe thought to call or email me that morning, before I dragged my toddler over there to get it, you know?
They delivered the cake when they said they would. And the cake was really adorable, it had a giraffe on it just like my son asked for.
BUT. The cake was not good. It was supposed to be orange creamsicle cake with vanilla mousse layers and buttercream frosting. The entire thing was flavorless. The cake didn’t taste like an orange creamsicle or anything at all. Not even vanilla. It wasn’t dry, but it seriously was like eating air. The frosting was the same. At least it wasn’t too sweet, but it had an oily texture and no flavor whatsoever, like whipped water. My son said «I don’t like it!» And I didn’t either. So we threw it out.
Don’t know what else to say about this place. I really want local businesses to succeed, and like I said, the cake was cute. That’s all I got.

My boss brought us a baker’s dozen of these cookies at work and they were amazing!!! Soft, fluffy, and wonderfully flavored. Hard to identify which type was my favorite… maybe the pumpkin? Or the lemon frosted (mind you, i normally hate lemon in my dessert!)? Some of the best cookies I’ve ever had. I wish I could bake like this so I could eat them every day! I will definitely make a point of stopping by their store myself and getting more!

I ordered a cake for my mom’s 70^th birthday. Ordering was easy — did it online and followed up a few days later to pay.
The cake was quite pretty and true to what I ordered. A 10″ round cake is three large layers and is big enough to feed a small Army. And cake appearance is almost as important as the taste, which didn’t quite live up to my expectations.
Not a huge fan of the Italian buttercream — felt heavy and an unpleasant oily aftertaste. Next time I’ll order a different kind of frosting. My only other complaint is that the cake was dry, but that could be because I had to pick up the cake on Saturday since they are closed on Sunday, my mom’s birthday. Also, I ordered the lemon filling, and the lemon taste was barely discernible. Had I not placed the order I would have guessed it was a vanilla filling.
I’ll definitely give this place another try even though the cake was not what I expected, esp. after reading the reviews. I’d stick to the fruit based rather than a mousse filling. While I waited for the cake, the counter girl was super nice and the Snickerdoodle was yummy — light and fluffy.

My 50^th birthday is today (September 18^th, 2015). My wife asked who I would like to have make my cake since this is such a landmark, after scouring reviews, I chose this place. She made the arrangements on Monday the 14^th. They confirmed on the 15^th, but on the 16^th said my location fell outside of their delivery area. Okay, she thought, she called with two alternate locations including my daughter’s place. «Sorry, it is too late for us to make it now.» was the reply. Really?
So, for a big day like this, my wife is almost in tears because she will now be going to a grocery store last minute for the cake. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. Thanks.

Cookies are one of my favorite desserts and Le Cookie Monkey definitely has some of the best cookies I’ve ever had! It’s a cute little shop set up in a neighborhood townhouse turned bakery. Everything is made in house from old family recipes.
They have all the classic cookies, chocolate chip and snicker doodle, but also some very unique ones, banana oatmeal chocolate chip or oatmeal hazelnut toffee chocolate chip. I would recommend buying a dozen to share with friends so you can taste all the flavors. They also have a great little parch space to enjoy your cookies in the sunshine.

I had planned on ordering my daughter’s 21^st birthday cake a week in advance, but circumstances prevented me from doing so. My daughter’s cat of 13 years became suddenly ill and we had to put her down.
I called Le Cookie Monkey a day before my daughter’s birthday, expecting to be told that I needed to have placed my order a few days in advance. However, much to my surprise, they said they could do it.
I spoke on the phone with Craig. He was so helpful. I didn’t know what I wanted, as far as decorations on the cake. All I knew was that I wanted it to be fancy, pink and gold. I wanted it to be extra special for my daughter, not only because it was her 21^st, but also because she lost her beloved pet. Craig spent a while with me on the phone. He was very patient with me as I tried to figure out what I wanted. I told him I saw some designs that I liked on their Unilocal page, so he got online to look at the photos. I finally decided on a red velvet cake with cream cheese filling and frosting, decorated with gold lace trim. I had to pay $ 15 extra for the lace decoration, but I didn’t mind.
I picked up the cake the next day. It was beautiful! Perfect for her princess themed brunch at Gracie’s. I added a mini candelabra. The cake was delicious! The best red velvet cake I’ve ever had.
I highly recommend this place!

I feel awful…
I did a last minute order for my partner’s birthday cake over a month ago, and the ladies here were so cool about decorating it just so… I picked it up last minute before closing and they even gave me a free sample of a new rocky road-like cookie they were testing (it was amazing). I promised to review them since I was a first time customer and to include a photo of the cake.
Well, as you can see it’s been a few weeks and my phone died somewhere in between so the cake photo went into the ether, BUT I’m happy to say…

[but it’s worth it]
The cake was delicious. It sorta dried out faster than I’d like, but let’s chalk that up to user error and my anti-social tendencies. Basically we have no friends here in Oregon, and we ate it on our own… over a period of a week… cmon, I’m not a total glutton. ;)
Anyway, if you’re looking for a local cakery that actually knows how to make a cake that both looks and tastes good, a cakery that doesn’t refuse to make cakes for anyone regardless of whether you like the same sex, different sex, or farm animals (okay, I don’t know about the last part, I’m just assuming they’re farm-friend-friendly) — well, these are your peeps!
Tell em Travis and Jakub sent ya! Not that they’ll remember me, but maybe next time I go in they’ll give me another one of those amazing rocky road cookies hot out of the oven. Seriously, it was so good I almost crashed my car saving a piece that nearly flew out of my hard turning the corner.

I was pretty skeptical when 2 weeks after we placed our order the owner/head chef sold LCM and moved to Washington, but with the assurance that the recipes would be the same and her sous chef taking over, we kept the order, and I am so glad we did.
We had a small 10 inch cake (White with white frosting and berries) and 3 types of cupcakes (chocolate with chocolate ganache, humming bird with white and plain with white) at our wedding. They were all delicious.
Our cake was devoured, and our guests made their way through most of the cupcakes. We are still enjoying the leftovers a few days later and they are holding up so well.
The death by chocolate was amazing (I love chocolate on chocolate with chocolate anything for dessert). The humming bird is sort of like a carrot cake, and I get to tell myself that it is healthy, and the plain is just damn good with a hint of almond.
This place lived up to the hype and I am happy we used them for our wedding!

Ordered a German chocolate cake for my daughters 23^rd birthday. I had never been to this bakery but it had awesome reviews so I decided to try it. I have to say I «polled» everyone who ate the cake and we all gave it a ¹⁰⁄₁₀. It was hands down one of the very best cakes I’ve ever had in my life. We celebrated my daughters birthday at Lapellahs in Vancouver and we gave a large slice to our server who took it back to the kitchen and she came out and said they all loved it and wanted to know the bakery name. It was that good!!!

Have used them twice now to make custom decorated cookies (eyeball cookies and then cookies the shape of Oregon and Michigan… odd combination, I know). They did a fabulous job, customer service was friendly, cost was reasonable for the quality and taste was absolutely delicious.

Delicious cakes and cookies, and extremely high service level!
Le Cookie Monkey did my 7 yr old’s birthday cake in a Star Wars — Battle of Hoth theme (I built a bunch of mini Lego figures and vehicles, then gave to them and they arranged). Huge hit, had many people ask who did the cake.
And the best part? THEY DELIVERED THE BIRTHDAY CAKE to the party venue! Best $ 15 delivery fee/investment I ever made, took a huge load off my shoulders the day of the party!
Extremely professional, cake was exquisitely-decorated AND delicious, and can’t say enough about how easy they were to deal with. Will definitely visit/buy a custom-anything from again.

Le Cookie Monkey to the rescue!!!
My sister-in-law was in the hospital so I was looking for the perfect treat to cheer her up, but my only problem was that I was in Austin and she was in Portland. Since I have not been to Portland yet and didn’t have a clue where any of the hot cookie spots were I was clueless but THANKFULLY I found Le Cookie Monkey and not only were they able to deliver the cookies without any problems, they were able to make her squirrel cookies (which I never thought I’d be able to find). All in all I’m so happy I found Le Cookie Monkey and Catherine was able to help me. After seeing the finished product you can guarantee I will be making a stop when I make it up to Portland!!!

We needed a cake for my daughters first birthday. We live on the coast but since I was in Portland I figured I’d try and find a place that could whip together a fiesta themed cake.
Le Cookie Monkey happily put together and executed my order all in three days. They also packaged the cake with extra reinforcement for my 2.5 hour drive.
The staff members at Le Cookie Monkey were kind, professional and efficient. We communicated all by phone and email. The design of the cake completely surpassed my expectations. The chocolate with ganache filling was to die for– so delicious! The confetti smash cake was scrumptious too… And the size could have fed 12 people! Both cakes turned into a delightful conversation piece… Many guests asking me where I found these amazing cakes!
All and all the service and quality were top notch. I will definitely be ordering more cake from here in the future.

My best friend was shopping around for an engagement party cake and she doesn’t live in town so I went to sample some cakes for her. I walked into Le Cookie Monkey store front thinking that they would have cupcakes for sale, unfortunately, they only have cookies and cupcakes have to be pre-ordered.
I ended up ordering a dessert sampler box (4 tastings for two, $ 10) and came to pick it up two days later – they typically need at least 24 – 28 hours to prepare the sampler. I ended up getting samples flavors of the three cakes my friend had narrowed it down to and one sample recommended by the woman that took my order:
1) Hazelnut cake with fresh berries and butter cream
2) Raspberry soaked white cake with raspberry mousse and butter cream
3) Spiced apple cake with cream cheese
4) Devil’s food cake with a chocolate ganache
The sampler came with four cupcakes with an accompanying side of filling/frosting. Delicious raspberry mousse, however, the cake was too sweet. The spiced apple cake was too dense for my likely and, surprisingly, the cream cheese wasn’t heavy. The Devil’s food cake was incredibly moist but too rich with the chocolate ganache. The hazelnut cake with fresh berries and butter cream was the winner for me, it was light and nutty – the tartiness of the fresh berries complimented it perfectly. Definitely a good representation of the Northwest.
