Lion and the Rose Victorian Bed & Breakfast Inn

Lion and the Rose was my first experience staying at a bed and breakfast. I only live 13 miles away but I needed a relaxing place to stay for the night. I collect antiques so staying in a beautifully maintained Victorian house decorated entirely in the Victorian style made me as happy as Disneyland makes some people. The Lavonna room is feminine, flirty, and floral. I particularly enjoyed the layout and size of the room which had a split bath, king size bed, and seating area that feels like its own private room. The seating area is perfect for daydreaming and watching the world from the turret of the house. I didn’t request breakfast but I still made use of the well stocked kitchen that had cereal, tea, cookies, and beverages for free. If you are looking for a picturesque, well organized place to relax look no further.

Amazing breakfast, healing Kangen water, lovely sophisticated hosts, wonderful spa bath tubs, classy quality sheets and bath robes, and super comfy beds.
We brought a guest home for tea in one of the many cozy seating areas, fire crackling in the fireplace. .. it’s just the place I would love to spend the holidays reading a book after exploring town — and everything in town is just close by.
I was sorry to read Tee J’s review — parking was really easy except Saturday night due to many people heading out to the nearby dinner and dance places — gee — we had to walk 25 (!) steps to the car! The Rose room was lovely and quiet, overlooking the back yard,
yes — one does hear the gentle murmur of a house awakening in the morning, or the shower above very slightly, traffic only muffled in the distance, and I am quite sensitive to noise. .. and yes — you have to make your dietary needs known before you come, our lady chef created lovely looking, very tasty meals for us. Thank you Steve and partner for creating such a romantic jewel off the trodden path.

The food is amazing. Everyone is friendly. It’s an hour walk from downtown which is not bad. ¹⁄₃ of it is crossing the Broadway Bridge which is a blast!
Every little detail was thought out in this place. It’s just the best.

First time staying at a B&B and if this is one of the «finest» won’t likely do again. It is located on a busy heavily traveled street with buses and commercial trucks driving at all hours of the night and morning. Very unrelaxing. Stayed in the Lavonna room with the turret, which was cold and totally drew in all of the noise from outside. No there is not tons of close street parking. Breakfast was a disappointment, although they did attempt to accommodate some special dietary constraints in general Alesandro is not a good cook. Why can’t they just do pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs etc. The snacks were nice as well as tea and cold beverages and access to the kitchen, microwave, guest fridge, and cold cereal. The owners seem ailing tired and bored.

This place did not disappoint. The owners were super friendly. The kitchen is cool, and everything feels very welcoming. Location is very good to get everywhere. The owners were very accommodating to vegan desires. One owner also shared a lot of info with me regarding real estate in Portland, which is the reason I was in Portland. His opinions still stick with me when I am making decisions on properties.
I stayed at the Portland Whitehouse previous to this stay. Yuck. The Lion and the Rose is a hundred times better! Portland Whitehouse feels very negative, superficial and unfriendly. The Lion and the Rose feels positive, all the way around. Feels like home. I will most definitely stay here again. The price was good too.

This was our first stay at the Lion and the Rose B&B and was very happy with our choice of lodging. The breakfast was great and the service was very good. They are very friendly and accommodating. The tour of the house and talk they give when they check you in is very nice. We were in the Rose Room on the first floor and it was very nice, also very close to the dining room and kitchen. The parking even though it was on the street was very convenient and worked out well. We are certainly going to return on our next visit to Portland.

Beautiful Victorian house with warm, friendly, helpful staff. Also, there are plenty of amenities to make your stay more comfortable (E.g. unlimited quality tea, fruits, cookies, drinks, etc.). We stayed in the Rose room on the ground floor, although we could hear people talking in the lounge area outside we didn’t feel that there was a lack of privacy for us. The room had air conditioning, a jacuzzi tub and a TV. It was also well furnished and clean.
We had the breakfast was good; it consisted of quiche, fruit and a muffin. However, the real treat of the morning meal is meeting some of the other guests.

Great B&B! It was our first experience at a B&B and after 9 hours of driving time, we finally made it to the Lion and the Rose. Steve was very accomodating and he walked us through the history of the house and our room (Avandel Room) and told us to make ourselves at home. The room itself was small and comfortable and we had the biggest private bath! Breakfast was promptly at 8:30 in the morning and very delicious. There was a lot of room to roam and explore and the house was very cozy and Victorian. I would recommend this B&B to anyone!

I’m so glad I treated myself to one night in the Avandel room at this amazing place! The bathroom had a gorgeous claw foot tub, was just across the hall and was all mine. Just had to enjoy a bubble bath in it! I’m just sorry I couldn’t stay longer. Everything was so beautiful. I love anything Victorian and took so many pictures of the place like I was in a museum. While I was looking around the following morning of my stay, waiting for breakfast, I discovered a booklet that showed Grimm was filmed here. Very cool! I have to watch the series now just to check it out. Breakfast was fantastic (quiche, fruit, coffee) and you are always welcome to help yourself to fresh cookies, jelly beans, juice, water, coffee and one of the largest assortments of tea that I’ve ever seen. The innkeepers are so warm, welcoming and nice. I was allowed to drop my bag off early at 7:30 in the morning and later, when I couldn’t figure out how to get back to the Inn via metro, I called and someone told me what metro to take and in which direction. These guys really know the in’s and out’s of making their guests feel welcome and I could tell they really love doing it. I felt like I was staying with family. I would love to visit again someday and stay longer!

Love, love, love our stay! Everything was absolutely perfect from the welcome to the tour to our rooms. We actually stayed in the apt and frankly wanted to stay permanently! The breakfast was outstanding. Best quiche I’ve ever had and I am a quiche snob. We are planning our next stay as I type this.

My wife and I stayed there on a TH & F while in Portland on vacation. Reservations and availability can be checked on their website or by calling. This B n B will start to impress you from the moment you park your car and walk up to it.
The house is beautifully decorated, very clean and true to the period. The owners gave us a tour upon arrival and shared some of the history of the house with us. We stayed in the Rose room which has it’s own bathroom and is on the first floor. Staying here for breakfast is a great option and much less than you’d pay at a restaurant. Seating is at a huge table in the dining room with other guests which was actually fun.
The bed was very comfortable as were the sheets, the Rose room has an attached bathroom that is very large.
There are other B & Bs in the Irvington district of Portland which you can walk to and check out. Stay here though, you’ll be glad you did!

FANTASTIC STAY! This is a Beautiful Home and alway’s a pleasure to stay. Next time I will stay longer.

I loved my stay at this Bed and Breakfast. The dining area has a table of complimentary cookies and pretzels, and you can help yourself to the wide assortment of teas in the kitchen. There is also a printer in the living room if you need to print anything.
The Lavonna Room I stayed in was beautiful, spacious, and bright. The bedsheets were amazing and I had a great night’s sleep! I did not stay for their breakfast but I would book here again if I had to. The rooms look much better in person than they do on the website! The only negative thing was that it was dusty in the room and my allergies were acting up.
It’s nice that they offer discounts if you book a room on the day of arrival, opt out of breakfast, and/​or if you request light housekeeping for multiple night stays.

Ditch those big, bland chain hotels. You’ve come all the way to Portland, so why not take in all its uniqueness and weird glory?
This B&B is definitely unique and not at all weird! Located in the Irvington Historic District, the neighborhood itself is worth the stay if you’re an architecture nerd. Stepping into this 1906-​built Queen Anne home is like going back in time (just ignore the computer by the stairwell and the modern-​day kitchen appliances). The owners, Steve and Dusty, are incredibly friendly and perfect hosts.
You’ll notice they have a breakfast option. This is no typical continental breakfast; you’re not gonna be picking up sugary, packaged danishes and day-​old bagels here. One of my favorite things about our stay is that we had a full breakfast (fruit, delicious scrambled eggs & veggies, scones, OJ, etc.!) at a beautifully-​set table with the other guests. They really bring out the fine china for you. It’s rare that you meet other guests, have a sit-​down meal together and start off your day with good conversations. Steve joined us all for breakfast and it was great to have a chat with people from around the country and in different life stages (my husband and I hope to be like the awesome couple we met who were celebrating their 50^th wedding anniversary!).
We stayed in the Escapade Room, which is exploding with shabby chicness — think pastel pink, florals, lace, the whole shebang. If you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll love it. If you’re not, just suck it up; you’ll find yourself victim to its flowery charming ways. They have other rooms to choose from, so be sure to book early on their site to make sure you get a room that suits your style if you prefer.
I can’t wait to visit Portland again; my husband and I are definitely coming back to the Lion & the Rose.
P. S. There’s a little «surprise» for you in the bathroom… don’t worry, the good kind, you’ll see!

Great plate to stay! I’ve never felt this comfortable in my life. The caretaker is really nice and they have a great garden to view. Just be careful not to step on any of the frogs. The host is very protective about them.
I must say the place really gives off a great vibe. And the host is extremely friendly. It’s like I’m awe stricken every time he touches me. I guess some people just have such a strong aura around them.
The only complaint I heard was from a little boy who said he saw the host eating frogs. But boys will be boys so I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.

My wife and I chose to stay here for our 13^th Wedding Anniversary and were not disappointed one bit. Amazing staff and the house is simply beautiful. This is a true benchmark that other B&B’s should strive to emulate. Within walking distance to Lloyd Center for shopping but the real treasure is on the streets surrounding the inn. Grab a coffee and stroll through this historic Irvington neighborhood with gorgeous old homes, tree lined streets and smell the flowers along the way. Friendly neighbors walking their dogs and we often received a welcome «Good Morning» along the way. A truly wonderful experience all around.

Stayed at the Lion and the Rose this past weekend, and had a wonderful time! My boyfriend and I were in town for a wedding, and we wanted to stay somewhere romantic, low key, and not overly-​frilly. Luckily, we got the Starina room, which featured dark green wallpaper, a giant wooden bed with stepstools, and a massive armoir. Our hosts, Dusty, Steve, and Russ, were all super friendly, and the location was perfect. Great, short walk to the MAX, and tons of easy-​to-​find street parking. We also met interesting people at the group breakfasts each morning.
The one downside was that as vegetarians, with one of whom doesn’t eat eggs as eggs – As in, no eggs or omelets or or quiche or frittata. Only eggs in things like pancakes. Or cookies. Or cakes – we were somewhat limited at the prepared breakfast. Steve offered to cook oatmeal or toast or extra things for us to substitute the egg and meat dishes, which was very generous, but we felt sort of guilty, especially when asked in front of others. While the request was noted on our reservation and we spoke with the staff, we still felt a little unease at breakfast. Next time I’ll contact the inn via phone beforehand to make sure we’re comfortable upon arrival.
All in all, though, a wonderful little inn!

Great Bed, Great Breakfast, Oh My Goodness!
What a gimme for a First to Review of some jackpot accommodations, yo! I’m happy to share with my fellow Unilocalers, though it may immediately require earlier bookings to get into my fave room.
The Lion and the Rose is by far one of the coolest B&B’s I’ve ever stayed in. Psst… at 150 clams, it’s a bargain for everything you get. Allow a brotha to break it down:
Super-​cool, definition of walkable neighborhood — the Irvington Historic District. Great coffee houses, hip cafes, nice shops, diners, eco-​veggie joints, Thai, über-​gourmet, wine store with local knowledge and an deep international selection — they got it covered in Irvington Hood. No, you’re not quite in LA or New York, but remember, this is just one nabe that’s a little bit out of downtown spotlight.
Classic house, dig the wrap-​around porch and swing. Beautiful rose garden on the side of a 1906 Victorian, refurbished in grand fashion. Ornate, luxurious rooms with INCREDIBLE antique furniture lovingly collected by the previous owners and the warm, hospitable partners/​family now happily relocated from the SF Bay Area. Get a tour of their apartment, in the totally styled-​out the attic.
The yum cookies, well-​stocked fridge, collection of papers, mags and books are extremely conducive to feeling gooooood about life. Ya dig?!
6 rooms, each with nice private baths, surprisingly voluminous lighting and special touches — like cutesy soaps in the shape of — you guessed it… a lion and a rose. All the rooms are cool.
The wireless and guest PC station (by the parlor and dining room AND the hidden, second staircase are typical bonuses. The two guys who own it, and one brother provide the kindest service. They have at least 12 sets of directions for neighborhood walks and various public tran/​driving directions to various parts of the city. As if you had doubt, their restaurant selections were to the satisfaction of this oft-​too-​snobby, almost-​Provincial SF-​ian.
Singles:
The Avandale has a double bed and is the only room with a bath across the hall instead of within, but as a huge corner suite-​like set up with a window table, in some ways it’s the nicest of all.
Tip for the Fellas:
Oh yeah, you’re into it. You’ve read this far, buddy, so I’ll tip you off that the Joseph Room is my favorite. Red velvet, exquisite desk, a rage of a chaise and curtains like they write about in those Continental tales. Big windows and well-​carved bed so tall that there’s these wide, little mini-​stairs on each side!!! Oh, and fellas, it’s more masculine than some of the rooms on the purple or lace tip. But don’t worry, even those are chill… no over-​dollied or doilied-​up rooms out of the half-​dozen. That’s your tip, amigo. Book the place for her, but choose the Joseph for you. You’ll both be lovin’ life and each other.
Nice botanicals make for a sweet clean-​up and you head down for fresh-​squeezed, bottomless quiche, muffins, pastries, fruits and fruity things… served on yet more, antiques. Get into the convo, or just chill quietly. Everyone’s so happy at that table, it’s always all good. Take your girlfriend, take your boyfriend, take some R & R at the L & R.
They do small weddings too… which are some of the proprietors’ favorite, and best, stories to share. Nuff said.
