My boyfriend and I felt very welcome when we got our 2 small tattoos by Jerry, he was very patient and super nice! Definitely wanna come back for a more detailed piece, we really loved the atmosphere at their studio.

YES! So very much yes. Amanda was amazing. A talented artist and a wonderful person to chat with while getting inked. She took my old, ugly, poorly executed flower tattoo and turned it into the most beautiful piece of art. I can’t stop staring at it. I love it!
The shop itself is in a great location, right in the middle of bustling Hawthorne in SE between 33^rd + 34^th. It’s upstairs and has lots of natural light and bright colors. This is not a dark, dingy spot. It’s very welcoming, not to mention clean!
It was very easy to set up an appointment via Facebook, and also send in pictures of what I currently had, and what I wanted to do. Jerry (the owner) was very responsive to all my messages and questions.
I would recommend this shop to anyone, and would love to come back myself the next time I’m in Portland.

I have several small tattoos that I have collected here and there over the years. Since it had been more than ten years my last addition I I was finally ready for something bigger so I searched Unilocal and read the many reviews for the many local tattoo studios and Martian Arts stood out. I immediately had a good rapport with Joanne and entrusted her with the creation of my chest piece. Every time I was walked up those stairs and into their studio I have felt welcome and at ease, after nearly twelve hours over several weeks there I felt at home and as if I had new friends. Plus my chest looks beautiful and feels like the art was always there, we just couldn’t see it before.

I get tattooed by Joanne Martian and my Husband gets tattooed by her husband, Jerry Martian. They are both super friendly and do amazing work! The shop is always clean and organized. I love their shop and their work and would highly recommend their shop for anyone who wants a spectacular tattoo.

I am so happy I met Joanne and Jerry! I happened into their old shop then went strait in to the new building on Hawthorne (a wonderful cozy and colorful space!). They both work magic with ink. I trusted Joanne with creating a memorial tattoo for my chest. After a brainstorming session we came up with the perfect concept from which she drew a fabulous tattoo. I can’t say how many people who have commented on her amazing art. I am so happy to call them my tattoo artists and friends. Thanks to you both!

BEST SHOP IN TOWN!!! Super chill and talented artists in a comfortable environment. They are extremely clean, they go above and beyond safety standards. I found them two years ago and couldn’t be happier! I get tattooed by both owners regularly and they are awesome, interesting people. Jerry did a commemorative portrait of my beloved dog that looks so much like her it’s uncanny. Joanne is free handing a ¾ sleeve of mandala, paisley, lacy, filigree, swirling gorgeousness around my babies footprints. Ok. Enough from me, just GO THERE! You won’t be sorry!

Three of us walked in with an idea and Jerry, Amanda and Joanne made our ideas become reality!!! They were the most welcoming people these out of towners could ever hope for. It didn’t stop there the other two artists were engaging and personable. Everyone in the shop made us feel like friends we have known for years. Besides the friendliness the art was amazing. Our tattoos look like what we presented them with. Their skills surpass most artist.

This was probably the best tattoo experience I have ever had! Thor was hilarious and did a beautiful job! He entertained my friend who sat there with me for the entire 3ish hours it took and she wasn’t bored, so props are due. We got in right away without an appointment and they even gave us the name to a place where my friend could get a piercing (Adorn). Everything was über clean and it was a comfortable atmosphere. I get so many compliments on my tattoo and it is definitely my favorite one. Thanks Thor!

I recently moved to Portland and am just getting to know the area. I had wanted some new ink for a while & I figured with all the change happening in my life, now would be a good time. I scanned the internet for a local tattoo shop but just wasn’t overly impressed with what I saw. While Visiting WTF bikes, the owner Tom, pointed me in the direction of Martian Arts. He showed me some of the tattoos he had done there & talked of how great Joanne & Jerry were. He also attested to the fact that any of the other artists in the shop would be as just good because they only hired the best. With such a ringing endorsement & proof right there on his skin I figured why not stop in.
I was immediately impressed with the cleanliness & environment of Martian Arts. The music was pumping & the tattoo guns were buzzing away. Although Jerry & Joanne were busy with clients, they still managed to greet me with a smile & point out the portfolios of all the artists who worked at the shop. They let me know that someone else would be in within the next few minutes & offered me refreshments, for me that went a long way.
Within a few minutes of my arrival, as promised, someone showed up & was prepared to answer my questions. Amanda Pea walked in the door loaded up with her gear, said hello & asked me if I needed help. She obviously was just getting into work but rather than go get her self set up she tossed all the stuff she was lugging to the side & was happy to help to make my next tattoo come to life.
So there I am with this hip smiling gal ready to explain my tattoo wants & needs. After a lengthy back & forth discussion I was ready to prop down a minimal deposit & set an appointment up for my next piece. Amanda was very attentive & involved with what I wanted. I had two things in mind, some simple script & a piece that was a sort of heritage concept & family dedication (We won’t talk about my other idea that she wisely steered me away from. Thank god for her sensibility.) Amanda gave me her contact info & told me to email her my ideas, pictures and anything else that pops into my head regarding the tattoos. She even told me to find her Facebook so I can see more of her work that she did not have readily available in her portfolio. Her work was amazing and I was excited to see what she could do for me.
Now when someone says email me your ideas & I will look at them, I expect what I have experienced in other trips to a tattoo studios. The artist still ends up drawing your tattoo the day you get there as you are watching. I don’t exactly find this as a fault but sometimes I wonder is there a chance that it could have been better? To my pleasant surprise this is not at all what happened with Amanda.
I emailed Amanda & she promptly responded. My appointment was not for another week or so & she was already interacting with me. Soon my inbox pinged with mock-​ups & sketches of what was to come. I asked my questions, tossed her ideas & she responded in kind & very quickly. This girl was professional & smart all rolled into one. She had several great ideas & suggestions for me that helped to develop my idea. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. So far Amanda Pea was simply amazing.
It has now been more than a week after my tattoos & I am finally sitting down to write this review. The script on my arm was a simple phrase & something folks may find a bit cliché but never mind them, I love it. Amanda’s art and lines are sharp, crisp & done with an amazingly steady hand. It is exactly what I wanted but as I said before that was the simple one. The other piece Amanda did is currently my pride & joy.
My parents despise tattoos at least until this last one. When I showed my mom Amanda’s work she teared up & simply said that is a tattoo I will allow you to have (As if she could take away the others). Amanda took my heritage & along with my parents initials merged it all into a magnificent piece that brought my tattoo-​hating mother to tears. That’s an artist. Yes maybe it is the added nostalgia that made my mother cry but if it was an ugly tattoo my mother would have waived it off with a disgruntled harrumph, of that I am fairly certain. It is such a meaningful piece that my brother who will be visiting me in July will be getting the exact same tattoo done. Family pride brought to you by Amanda Pea.
If you ever are trying to decide on tattoo studio or artist I highly suggest the folks at Martian Tattoo & even more specifically Amanda Pea. The prices are more than fair considering the time & effort put forth by these folks. You can go to any random shop & get some flash or have them draw on you the day of or you can go to Martian & find true artists who take pride in their abilities & clients. I know I will be back to visit & have more work done by Amanda sometime soon but if you get there before I do make sure to tell Amanda Robb sent you. You will not be disappointed one bit.

I’ve been getting work done at Martian Arts for about 3 years, and it is the best tattoo experience I have ever had. I personally am a huge fan of Joanne Martian, as we have very similar taste in tattoos and style, but Jerry’s work is also exceptional. Joanne has done 90% of the work on my body and currently I try to make it in to see her as much as possible.
The shop is one of the most comfortable places to be, I look forward to long sessions there where I get to hang out for the day, as there is always a good mood and lots of smiles. I have gotten tattoos all over the world, and couldn’t recommend this shop enough!

Easily the best tattoo experience i’ve had. Everyone was super chill and made us feel welcome. My tattoo artist Kiana was amazing and did an incredible job. She made getting my ribs done a tolerable experience and my piece is tight… Tighter than a glove son!

Went in to get a finger tattoo a couple days ago and jerry the tattoo artist was very friendly! He fit us in without an appointment and did a very good job. Love my tattoo!

I had the most amazing experience today at Martian arts! Jerry, his wife, and the entire staff are so nice! After having the worst experience with my previous artist I almost gave up but he really changed my experience. So excited to get more work done. This is the best place!

I am officially in love with this shop.
First off, the location is amazing. Being able to look down over Hawthorne while getting tattooed is pretty bad ass. The atmosphere inside is fantastic; warm, clean, open, and inviting. And the married couple that own it are just awesomely adorable.
My artist, Amanda, was so much darn fun. I came in with an idea and she took it and ran in the best possible direction. I cannot recommend her highly enough (my husband came in the next week and got some work from her as well after he saw mine).
Overall I was 100%blown away. If you’re in PDX and considering a tattoo do yourself a favor and get your butt over here.

This shop is tattoo paradise! Married Martian team Jerry and Joanne are rock stars! Not only are they super cool people they are both extremely talented tattoo artists. The shop itself has a great energy to it and is centrally/​conveniently located in Hawthorne.
My husband and I were both tattooed by Joanne recently and couldn’t have had a better experience. I have not had any work done by Jerry yet, but have many friends who have and they all sing his praises. We are however in the beginning stages of an add-​on large piece that I’m quite excited about.
I am a bartender and have a lot of visible ink, so it am constantly being asked where to go for a great tattoo. I always recommend Martian as I know they will have a great experience.

I was a bit nervous going in, its been awhile since my last tattoo. Jerry totally put me at ease and the atmosphere is really great. You can tell everyone who works there enjoys what they do. I also LOVE my tattoo and will be back again soon.

I recently moved to Portland and wanted to get a tattoo for some time now and looked online for tattoo shops in Portland and came across many nice shops but Martians was the place for me. Reading through reviews and looking at the art work I was sold, I made contact with Jerry and showed him what I had in mind, he then suggested we get more creative with it and when I saw what he had in mind, I was blown away. I came in for my tattoo and he made it a very enjoyable day, we talked music, sports, and Portland. The tattoo came out awesome and everyone loves it. The place is very clean, filled with art work and the staff was very nice. I’ve found my tattoo home at Martians
