History

Established in 2009.

Traci Manley and Mikal Gilmore are 2 talented tattooers who met while working together and formed a friendship based on mutual respect and admiration. Together in September 2009 they opened New Rose Tattoo. In July 2015 the sister shop, Blue Ox Tattoo, opened it’s doors in Portland’s historic Kenton neighborhood.

Our artists have a variety of styles, talents and artistic backgrounds. I am SO GLAD I found this place! My best friend and I had booked our appointment months in advance before we left in September. It’s in a really great neighborhood and had ample parking too. We both got tattooed by Carrie and we couldn’t have been happier! She was such a charming person and listened to exactly what we wanted. She gave me a couple of options for my script and went above and beyond on making us feel comfortable. Honestly, the entire staff was super friendly to us. We ended up chatting with Erica too who is way down to earth! I love everything about this place and I can’t wait to book my next appointment!

They are wonderful! I came in with my twin sister to get tattoos for our birthday while visiting Portland. We wanted something simple but it turned out we ended up going through a few different drafts cuz my sister and I wanted to be sure we loved it and Jared was so incredibly patient, it took us 2 hours to finalize the design but each time we seemed uncertain Jared was super sweet and patient and went back and drew another draft until we were absolutely sure. We felt bad for being so high maintenance but he made us feel welcome and the result was so cute, and it’s forever so I’m glad we found someone with the patience to work with us and make sure we loved what was going on our bodies forever!

Awesome shop! The artists are all super friendly too when you walk in. Carrie will be doing my tattoo and my husbands. We are so happy with her being our artist. She listened to each of us about our tattoos/​ideas/​wants/​etc, told us about her creative additions that she was thinking after seeing our ideas and she asked our permission to even think of adding her own creative additions (that was an awesomely sweet thing to do). After the consult our appointment to begin is one month out but it’s worth it — as you can see in the pics online. While we were waiting for our consult we were able to look at the shop and see the customers. The shop is very rad, and personalized. The customers were all smiling and seemed like they were having a really good time, even though they were getting tats! Ha! We’re both counting down the days until we get to start!

I was flying in from San Diego to run my first marathon in Portland and was looking for a local shop to get some ink to celebrate my accomplishment. Not knowing where to go, I selected New Rose Tattoo based on the abundance of positive online reviews. My appointment was with Carrie and I could not be any happier.
Carrie took my rough design and cleaned it up to perfection. Carrie was so very nice to work with. She is very professional and super friendly. The shop was very clean, laid back and, in general, just a very nice place that makes you feel welcome.

My friend and I went in to get two really simple tattoos and we couldn’t be happier!
My friend wanted a short word tattooed on her hand and after being turned away by a rude artist at another shop because he «just couldn’t do it,» the lovely Carrie took the time to explain the pros and cons of hand tattoos and even had one on her finger to prove it. The process was quick and easy and the ink is healing quite nicely.
As for me, I got a simple symbol in the back of my neck done by Xavier and it was by far one of the best tattoo experiences I’ve ever had. He must have repositioned the stencil at least 7 times until he was positive it was perfectly centered… It was so small he could’ve just slapped it on there since I paid the minimum, but he treated it like a large, expensive piece. What a stand up guy. Just the sweetest. Will definitely be going back for larger pieces.
If you’re looking to get some gorgeous ink done by some truly kick-​ass people, go to New Rose. Just go.

I came in to get a Calvin and Hobbes tattoo. Based on the artist’s portfolios and Unilocal reviews, I settled on Mark Ledford at New Rose Tattoo.
And boy, am I glad I did. Mark was professional, responsive and enthusiastic in the initial consult. When I came in for the tattoo, he had a couple of sketches worked out, and we picked one and ran with it.
I am so happy with the result — Mark nailed it! It turned out even better than I had imagined. I’m so looking forward to getting Calvin done next month. New Rose is a wonderful place, and Mark’s a wonderful artist.

I had a great experience at the shop and with the artist. However, the simple 3 letter script tattoo didn’t turn out as it healed. The ink came out in certain spots and in others the line width bled to be thinker that originally done. I went to another shop to have this corrected and it’s now great. I hate giving bad reviews but this is a permanent thing, so I wanted to share my experience.

I have had so many tattoos and the environment at New Rose is so great! Friendly staff and everyone makes you feel very welcome. Xavier Darling is so professional and an amazing artist. I gave him an idea of what I wanted and his creative genius took over and the collage he came up with is better than I could have ever imagined! I definitely recommend Xavier if you are ever in need of a fabulous tattoo!

Tattoo virgin who just ended the inkless streak today thanks to Carrie.
This place is amazing. Carrie drew up exactly what I wanted and it was perfect. Sure it was just words but she was able to incorporate the handwriting of my
Family members from some samples too. And she put we at ease from the moment I walked in today, and even gave me a lollipop which is surprisingly very helpful. Anyway the whole place is spotless and everyone in the shop from artists to fellow customers. A wonderful first tattoo experience and I’ll definitely be back for more!

I got a tattoo done here by Mark Ledford, and I am thrilled with the results. I gave him my basic ideas, but he designed a custom piece that is gorgeous, and the coloring is excellent as well. Mark is also easy to get along with and puts people at ease. I will be coming back when I am ready for my next piece, for sure.
Additionally, this shop plays GOOD music and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.

Completely pleased with Leslie Hero and her amazing service! My tattoo idea was handled by her so masterfully and the entire experience of getting my first tattoo ever was just smooth and delightful. Before getting the tattoo, sharing my tattoo ideas was made totally possible since I’m from out of town. She would reply in such a timely manner and I felt that I could trust her without having even met her in person! Everything was just done so seamlessly and professionally.
Upon getting my tattoo, Leslie was understanding and made the whole experience a fun ride! The outline of my shoulder piece was crisp and clean and the shadowing was done so perfectly — the entire piece was flawless. I highly recommend Leslie Hero and the New Rose Tattoo shop!

First timer here. I had a fairly simple design and wanted to get the scoop on getting work done here. I called and asked if they could work me in on short notice since I was out of town visiting — my questions were quickly answered and I was invited in to talk in more detail as well as set up my appointment prior to my departure! I was made to feel comfortable, safe and confident by the folks at New Rose Tattoo.
Mark Ledford did my work — Mark was fun, informative, quirky and humorous. His work was great — he helped my streamline my design and gave it a test run using stencil. Mark answered questions, consulted on the placement of my tattoo and executed flawlessly. Thanks Mark.
