OHSU Casey Eye Institute

My 12 year old Daughter could have died because of them! ⁸⁄₂₄ her eye Dr saw an issue & sent them a referral. By ⁸⁄₂₈ they hadn’t called & eye Dr sent 2^nd referral. ⁹⁄₂ they still hadn’t called & Dr referred to different clinic. ⁹⁄₄ she was seen & sent to ER for MRI & spinal tap then scheduled for emergency brain surgery the next morning. I called office manager Jennifer N to find out why this happened & she said I should worry about kid’s health not who dropped the ball. This is the worst thing to say to Mom in this situation. I asked for her boss Diane to call me she didn’t. Few days later I called left message for Diane to call she didn’t. Kelly a patient advocate called. She didn’t have facts, said it takes weeks for new patient appointment which is unacceptable, didn’t care & when I mentioned coming up said I have no business there. I asked her to have boss call me she didn’t. I called back & asked for boss to call she still hasn’t. I’ve tried to reach though Facebook, comments were deleted & I’m blocked from leaving any. I’m still waiting for call & want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

When you go for a consultation for surgery, they’re never going to tell to you that this is a teaching hospital. What does that mean, you ask? It means you’re going to be their guinea pig when it comes to surgery, but you won’t get guinea pig prices, and they’re not going to tell you that you’re the guinea pig either. So you innocently sign a contract with one of their top notch surgeons for surgery, but then 99.99 999% of your post op care ends up being doled out to his fellow or maybe even his nurse.
But they never tell you this before surgery. You think you’re paying all those big bucks for the big cheese surgeon but your care is actually turned over to somebody else once he’s got your money and your surgery is just a few hours old. Maybe your surgeon wasn’t even the one who actually operated on you. Maybe it was his fellow. How will you ever know? Your operative report will never tell the truth.
You can’t even talk to your surgeon on the phone. Once he’s got your money and your surgery is over with, he won’t answer your calls. All his calls are pushed off to his fellow or nurse or yet another doctor on call that you’ve never met before. Nor will he answer messages through the OHSU MyChart portal, a system set up by OHSU for patients to communicate with their doctors. I was told by his nurse that he doesn’t use the MyChart message system, which means he refuses to participate in a system that OHSU specifically set up for patients so they can communicate with the doctors. What does that tell you?
Word of caution: OHSU is a state hospital and the legislature has set a limit on how much their malpractice awards can be. So if you’re left in a vegetative state or quadriplegic because they messed up, the most you’re going to get is $ 200,000, which won’t go very far to pay for your care.

Best eye care. The staff is remarkably amazing. There is a reason why people travel all across the country to Casey. If you have an eye issue, come here.

Had Lasik 1 week ago. Dr Chamberlain and staff was great. I would highly recommend them

I needed a new prescription and I called they told me that it was a 6 month wait. So I asked them if i could get contacts to hold me over till the appt they said no. So I said the doctor would rather me wear 2 week contacts for 6 months than you give me enough to hold me over and she said yes. Horrible customer service. I WOULD never go there I’m so disappointed in them

Wanted to make an eye appointment with Casey Eye Institute after having a recent vision issue. They said it would take FIVE MONTHS to get an apointment!!! Shocking and ridiculous!

They are the only reason I can see! Two surgeries with doctor Hauck and I see doctor hills on a regular basis! I love them all :)

I received LASIK surgery yesterday from Dr. Fraunfelder. I am absolutely amazed. Yesterday morning my vision was around ²⁰⁄₄₀₀ and I had astigmatism to varying degrees in both eyes. This morning for my follow up I tested to ²⁰⁄₁₅ and I could even read a few ²⁰⁄₁₀ letters. My corneas where challenging because the surfaces fluctuated. Fortunately they are thick. My results exceeded expectations.
The staff were wonderful and explained everything really well. They anticipated that I might be nervous about the process so they talked me through each step to keep be calm. One nurse even held my hand during the first part, which was the flap creation. The procedure was painless and really fast. The actual laser part took only about 15 seconds per eye.
I highly recommend Dr. Fraunfelder. He has been rated as one of the top LASIK surgeons in the country, plus their facility is located within a hospital which specializes in ophthalmology withint a larger University hospital.

the casey eye institute is a very uncaring place and they have no bed side manners and they don’t communicate with their patients and they act like your just another eye case and rush you out of the office anyway the doctor i saw was dr steven bailey he diagnosed me with having a retinal tear in my right eye his not a good doctor he is very uncaring and no bedside manners and no communication i did not like him or his attitude in the end i did not let him do my scleral buckle surgery i never saw another eye doctor at the casey eye institute and i never went back to the casey eye institute and i never looked back i also never had my scleral buckle surgery done i did not want the surgery anyway please if you need eye care go some where else and avoid the casey eye institute their are better eye institutes with better doctors who care about their patients am sorry to say casey eye institute is not one of them i do have to admit it the casey eye institute is a nice eye institute but that’s all that i like about them!

You pay a little more to have a common procedure done mostly by a computer guided laser for one reason. There is AN EYE SURGEON standing above you. You pay extra to have the warm and fuzzy feeling that if things go terribly wrong the person standing next to you can probably fix it. You do not have that luxury anywhere else. Granted things very rarely go wrong but if they did I didn’t mind blowing an additional $ 200 to feel safe because let me tell you that having your eye cut open, at least the mental image of, is probably the most fearsome thing anyone has ever done to me.

Top-​notch professional medical services combined with a human touch make Casey Eye Institute a great place to go for eye surgery. I can’t attest to their other services, but my experience with them for LASIK was great.
Of course the doctor and staff were skilled and smart. But they were also kind — which makes such a difference when you are trusting someone with your eyes! I did an initial exam at a different facility but didn’t feel as comfortable as I did with the folks at Casey.
The surgery room is kept COLD for the laser. This is true of all clinics, so wear your leg warmers! The assistant brought me a pre-​heated blanket, which was so helpful. You have to hold very still, which is impossible if you are shivering!
The actual laser part of the surgery is no big deal. The hard part is when they are prepping you for it, because they are messing around with your eye and you have to keep looking straight ahead. For cutting the flap, they put a suction cup on your eye and that feels a little weird. Then for the actual surgery, they have to tape back your eyelashes. That was the worst part for me. There were multiple points that were mildly uncomfortable but not painful, during or after. I just had the surgery a few days ago, so my vision isn’t perfect yet but certainly good enough to drive during daylight. As I continue to heal, my vision will get better and nighttime driving will be possible.
Cost: At 2K per eye, they are on par with the other high-​end facilities using the best equipment. Like most others: «enhancements» (surgical finetuning) within the first year is covered, and there is an 18-​month interest free payment plan available through CareCredit. (Helpful if you want to use your health savings account and spread it over 2 years!) Unlike others at this pricepoint, the prescription eyedrops are included, which can save you $ 100 if you are paying out of pocket. You buy your own pain meds and Valium, which cost me less than $ 5 at the pharmacy on the first floor of their building, just by presenting my health insurance card (even though my plan is high-​deductible and they don’t actually pay any of it — they just have a discount worked out). Also, plan to spend $ 10 per box of eyedrops for a few months after, as you will have to buy the non-​preservative kind which is more expensive.
Three year follow-​up: I’m still thrilled with my results. I have had glasses since I was 7 years old, and now I have ²⁰⁄₁₅ vision (slightly better than ²⁰⁄₂₀). My vision is similar to what it was with glasses. I did have halos at night, which means that a street light looks like a starburst, for 3 – 6 months, so it’s helpful if you can avoid driving at night. Also for a few days to a week after the surgery, my vision was blurry and it made it difficult to think clearly or to live at my normal pace. I could still function, it was just helpful to slow down and expect that something like finding my keys would take longer than normal.
