Old Port Wine & Cigar

Jacques and Erin are simply the best! Always patient with questions, and ready with suggestions for any price range. In addition, they are amazingly accommodating with local deliveries. And, when I tried a recommended bottle and wasn’t thrilled, they insisted on replacing it with something else. Such a delightful buying experience. And their wine tastings are very well done.

Great service today– great selection– great looking store.

I had an awesome interaction with the staff at Old Port Wine & Cigar today. I walked by on a whim with a friend, and mentioned that’d like a few cigars for a special occasion. We decided to go in, and I was immediately greeted by Jack, an older fellow who we quickly found out was the resident cigar expert.
After I explained my request, he took me over to the cigar room and gave me a few suggestions. He was friendly and clearly loved his hobby. Always a good sign when employees love what they do.
I asked him all sorts of other questions– such as if there are any cigar bars in Portland (sadly no) and he mentioned that perhaps we could smoke them in the back patio that the shop owns. It seemed oddly kind for a stranger to offer up a place for us to enjoy a cigar, and the manager said that would be fine.
I didn’t end up buying anything, but I have every intention of going back for a smoke with a few friends and make even Jack.

I am by no means what might be considered a savvy wine drinker. I can go so far as to tell you that my tastes run to reds — chianti, Shiraz… and I choose them by the simple, but not always effective, means of interesting labels if I’m feeling daring, and familiar interesting labels if I don’t feel like playing wine roulette.
The crew at the Old Port Wine & Cigar Merchants take the pain (and the gamble) out of wine shopping. They are very well versed in their stock, from price points to the way they’ll complement various meal items. They make wine tasting and purchasing approachable for someone who could be leaps and bounds away from connoisseur status, to speaking the lingo of hints, sips, swishes to those who have a verbal lexicon and palate of viticulture behind them.
Keep an eye out for the wine tastings hosted in the shop! A great way to get out of your wine comfort zone and try some new things! Last time I attended one I was pleasantly intrigued by the selection and took home a white!

The guys that work there are really fun. They know their wines, have a fantastic selection and are without the pretension. Best cigar selection in Portland also.

WOW, I love this place. Jacques is quite the character who is engaging and has spot on advice for the novice and not so novice. I’ve had some great recommendations and their inventory has something for all budgets. Great place!

Jacques deVillier, the owner, is a legend around these parts! He’s got a larger than life personality and has a wealth of info about the area, especially food recommendations. He’s super friendly and funny! Too bad they don’t ship wine to Cali because this is one local business I’d love to support.
Also, Erin is the store manager and resident wine goddess-that’s her official title on the biz card. She’s super sweet and friendly too!
Also, a big shout out to store regular Dewey for taking the time to chat with some tourists and share the local lore.
TIP: if you buy a bottle of wine that either of them recommend and don’t like it, you can return it for any reason and get your money back.

I love going in to Old Port Wine Merchants! Jacques, the owner, has an impressive history in the wine industry and has a lot of insight to share. I have been in several times in the past looking for a suggestion and end up leaving with a bottle that is fantastic! Surprisingly, the prices are also pretty good — better than the other wine place down the street and not nearly as much I would expect to pay given the location. Their new location on Commercial Street is great — much more roomy. It looks like he has a pretty good selection of cigars in a giant walk-​in humidor, but given I don’t partake, that’s as much insight as you’re going to get from me on that. If you walk in to Old Port Wine Merchants, you almost always leave feeling as though you’ve made a new friend in Jacques — he’s just that friendly.

My family and I vacationed in Portland, ME for a week and loved stopping in here for wine and cigars. They feature an excellent and varied selection and the owner and employees really know their wine. They helped us choose divine vino and respectfully stayed within our stated price point. My Dad enjoyed the cigars and even came back for more later in the week. I’d definitely go back!

This was a quick stop for hubby to pick up a few cigars on our way to Sorrento, Maine. The shop is in the heart of Portland’s historic area right on Commercial Street. You can tell this building is hundreds of years old and the people in this shop have have old world charm and a welcoming nature. They had a great selection of cigars and wines. If you are in the area it’s really worth the stop in. Parking in front of the shop rotates often, so if you are patient a spot will open up quickly.

Love jacques. If you want a guy with an opinion and a passion for wine and smokes, he’s your man.

I was hesitant about getting a cigar here — most liquor stores that sell cigars just have that tiny case of old cigars that have a low turnover and aren’t kept up well.

That was not the case here. This is a great little liquor store — with a decent selection of cigars. I was truly excited to find my brand here, which I don’t see too often in stores. I picked out one to try it on for size, and had the people at the counter ring me up. No attitude — for once! If only everyone selling cigars were like these nice people. The girl behind the register even offered up a cutter to cut my cigar with! How thoughful and nice! Especially since mine was in the limo. I mean, car…
