Phagans’ School of Hair Design Salon

Love it! Cheap everything with salon results help the kiddos learn and get a great looking style at the same time. Beware they are learning so it takes longer set aside 2 – 3 hours depending upon what you want done & they are ½ the price of Paul Mitchell school.

I have been going to this location for years to get a variety of things done to my hair. And I thought it was time to change it up again, so I made an appointment to get a peekaboo streak in my hair this evening, I got it. (After 4 hours of bleaching, and figuring out why the color didn’t stay) that wasn’t the only issue.
The girl who did my hair ask me where I wanted the peekaboo, and told ME to grab the chunk of hair I wanted. (How the hell am I supposed to know exactly where to put it? I just know I want it in the general area) (she did not check to see if it was placed well or anything) (she has been there for over a year and a half).
While the bleach and then color were sitting, the girl doing my hair disappeared and never came to check on me. AT one point my scalp started burning, but I couldn’t tell her that because she never checked on me. And then the fails started slipping, and I couldn’t tell her because she never checked on me, and then I had to fix the foils myself (getting dye all over my hands)
After bleaching/​coloring twice, once she put my non-​colored hair back over the colored part, I notice that the roots of the color are showing through the top if my head. I was livid.
Trying to be polite I asked if there was anyway I could come back a different day (not this week because of school and work). The manager (with glasses) said that i only had a week and then further questioned me as to why I couldn’t come in sometime this week. After that she continued to say «what do you have going on? Why can’t you come in? A few days isn’t enough? I’m only giving you a week.». At that point I was thinking,” that is non of your business, and if I say I cannot come in then I cannot come in.” She then looked angry at me like I hadn’t been sitting there for the past four hours putting up with them.
I know it is a school, but to have general customer service skills is a must in that type of business, and they did not have any.
Only one teacher was helpful. She had helped me with my hair a couple years ago and I thank her for being understanding. But the rest of them were not professional and did not know how to speak to customers (me). Unfortunately after about 8 years of customer loyalty, I will not be returning to this school. This is the worst experience I have ever gotten. I work in customer service, and if I had acted or treated a customer the way they treated me, I would have been fired on the spot.
(Sorry for grammatical errors, I am still upset about how they handled my situation tonight.)

So-​so is the best descriptor, but that’s probably reasonable for a $ 6 haircut from students over 1 hour. It’s a no-​frills experience – different than the faux luxury experience at Aveda. Have had 6+ haircuts here, mostly all right, once a disaster (way overcut) and once quite nice (meticulous student). Generally, though, the students seem a bit lackluster in their effort.

It’s a gamble at Phagan’s. I’ve had a few decent people but more not so decent. Regardless of quality, it is always quite time consuming but that is the trade off for price I guess. My most recent lunch time appointment for a «blowout and makeup application» for a special date with my fiancée involved me needing to brush my hair out and just wear it up in a bun to hide the insane amount of product she put in my hair and a trip to the mall to have my make-​up entirely redone because I looked so ridiculous, I couldn’t return to work. She washed my hair, put 4 – 5 different products in it, then proceeded to twist my hair into 30 sections then blow dry it into these crusty stalactites. I wanted a blowout with volume and smooth shine and left with filthy hair not fit for anyone’s eyes. Aside from the globby liquid eyeliner, I had visible contour lines. I asked for light natural makeup.
There was hardly any oversight by an instructor during the process nor was the student checked out at the end of the appointment. The student was really out of it and had bruises and deep scratches on her arms. Another student was doing his personal grooming at the station across from me. While I was being worked on, I watched a man SHAVE, then straight iron his goatee and then style his hair while using all the tools he’s going to use in clients later. I’m sure he’ll clean them but it’s still just gross. Pretty weird experience all around. Aveda is consistently good and worth the trip across the river.

My stylist here was able to match my haircut to a picture I bought in. She listened carefully as I described what I wanted. I tend to regret most my haircuts– not this time! :)
It’s also extremely affordable and scheduling an appointment is quick and easy. I’ll definitely be back.

I had about 4 inches of growout and went in to get some highlights and lowlights to make my hair blend more. Well it was a 4 hour ordeal. They finished with the foils and washed out my hair and it just didn’t look good. I asked for a few touchups which they graciously did, but the girl doing my hair seemed to have an attitude. I understand it’s a school and skill levels vary, but at the very least customer service should be a priority.
After all was said and done the teacher came over and said it looked very good. I went home and my husband asked why I had a dark area of growout at the back of my head. They never even gave me a mirror to look and I didn’t think to ask because the teacher came over and was saying how awesome it looked. Once again I understand it’s a school, but you have to be blind not to see a giant area that didn’t get any color. Especially when the whole purpose of me coming in was to get rid of my growout. And the fact that a teacher looked and didn’t say anything boggles my mind…
I called the place back and scheduled an appointment for the next day, thinking they could just put a few foils in and fix the dark area. When I came in, the director looked at my hair and told me that they would have to charge me extra to fill in the dark area. He also explained to me that the student felt I was very difficult to work with because I was very specific with what I wanted. Well I’m sorry but almost every woman I know is very specific about her hair. It’s kind of what the whole industry is about.
After speaking with the director, I felt very offended. Maybe I was difficult to work with, but I don’t need to know that. It’s not good customer service to explain to your customer how unpleasant they are to work with. Especially since I tried extra hard to be nice to the girl. I tried to engage her in conversation and I was never rude in any way.
I was going to stay and even pay extra to have them fix my hair, but I felt so terrible after what the director said to me that I just left. I will never go back there again. And I will no longer give recommendations for the school to anybody.

This is my go-​to place for a hair cut. $ 6 for a haircut is a win in my book.
I hate when all I need is a trim and a salon wants to charge me $ 35. NO THANKS.
I’m also lucky that my hair grows fast. I don’t get annoyed if it gets cut a little too short.
The girls here have always been nice and can do a good job.

Eleea did a muddy weave on me. I had gotten highlights a week ago, but the stylist hadn’t put any on the front of my face. I also wanted more gray coverage. Miss Connie and Eleea rocked at coming up with a way to do a color touchup and highlights at the same time. I also got to help Eleea learn more about styling curly hair. She used a diffuser on me for the first time and really was excited about creating the perfect curls.

I’m editing my previous review of my experiences at Phagans. I saw two stylist’s here. The first had a nice personality, but her work was so-​so and barely lasted a week, if that. Also her haircut caused the hair to bush up and it was extremely irritating. A nightmare for me since I hate thick hair, especially mine, and not being able to settle it down was horrible. The second seemed to do good work, but is very rude, not during service of course, but rescheduling with her is on her terms, and management goes with it, calling it «miscommunication.» Basically, your denied. That kind of treatment is not promising for this school. I would not recommend a visit past the initial first one, and don’t chance a haircut, just don’t.

The place itself is large, well lit, and professional enough looking. But the atmosphere, and my stylist, in particular, left me with a bad feeling, and a mediocre haircut. I waited for about 10 minutes although I made an appointment. The waiting area is small. I don’t think there’s a parking lot but I was able to secure parking with not too much trouble.
I told them what I wanted, but little by little they kept talking me out of it. They either didn’t trust the stylist or they didn’t think I wanted as big a change as I was asking for — or both.
The supervisor ended up starting the cut, it seems she didn’t know how — which struck me as odd. Twice a group of students walked by and she mentioned that she wanted to be doing what they were doing (some procedure) and they should wait for her. She obviously would rather be doing something other than my hair, and made me worry she’s rush my cut.
Her hairside manor was poor or non-​existent, and her skills lacking. They didn’t take enough off, and I have been cutting ever since. It took a while… longer than a typical cut — but that’s to be expected. The price sure is cheap. I guess you get what you pay for.

Look thye are students, that being said I had a very great haircut experience, maybe I was lucky but im gonna go back for that price whole family got their hair cut prices reasonable on other services too.

If you’re going to go to a school of hair design for a haircut, you need to understand that there is a reason it’s cheaper. Complaining about how long it took to complete a simple haircut is silly. It’s a student! This is why student drivers drive in cars with big block letters saying STUDENT DRIVER. There is, and rightfully so, a different set of expectations for novices.
With that said, the teachers here know what they are doing. The first time I got a haircut here I could tell the student was struggling. I said to myself «oh no, so this is why it’s so cheap and why I shouldn’t come to beauty schools». But the teacher came over at the end and fixed it. I also enjoy hearing the teachers impart knowledge on the students, if you listen up you can learn a thing or two about hair cutting yourself.

I decided to try this place out for a facial, knowing its a training school and therefore a lot more cheap then a full-​on spa. I paid $ 20 and had their classic facial. No surprises, no overly fragrent lotions/​cleansers, which was a plus. Lots of facial, and neck massaging, along w/​a hand massage, all good. These are students, so they are still perfecting their technique. The room they do it in had 4 tables, so realize you may not be the only one in having a facial done, but it was still quiet and relaxing. I highly recommend making appointments for anything here. They were packed on a Saturday, and I had to wait about 20mins before getting into the room, even though I did have an appointment.

This is my new favorite spot. I went in today for the first time to get a hair cut. The young girl Sara that did my hair was awesome.
Did you know if you have your haircut for $ 4.00 they will apply make-​up to you as well. Cory did my make-​up and she gave me so many tips as she worked. I walked out of there looking like I belonged on a magazine cover. They pampered me, made me look great and all for $ 4.00. What a fantastic deal.

The location is great:
–2 hour parking right outside of the school.
–Tons of places to grab a bite within walking distance.
–Lloyd center is about two blocks away as well.
My hair cut experience was okay but not excellent:
–My gal did not want to be there and let me know it
–She thinned my hair by cutting too close to the scalp, which is incorrect from my past experiences
–I needed to use the restroom and waited around for 5 minutes for someone inform me about its whereabouts

I realize that this salon is serviced by beauty school students still in training.
WIth that in mind, the hair stylists I’ve gotten the last few times seemed to struggle with just a simple request to trim my shoulder length hair in layers. One of them took over two hours for just that simple request!
I’ve had better experiences at other hair school salons. No hard feelings, though. Phagan’s prices are low, so I suppose it’s a good place try to it out for yourself if you’re on a budget and hope that you get lucky with a good stylist.

Horrible. Prices are what a real salon with professionals charge. students working on you. Having a pedicure take over 1 hour. They are gougers I will never return there again. They are a rip off with a bunch of free attitude.

Came in as a walk-​in on a Fri night, it was approaching 9pm and I was sick of this duck tail I had going on. I was happy to see my stylist had short hair too, unfortunately she was unable to deal with my curliness. In fact she kept doing things in opposition to my request to tone down the Jackson in my hair. I tried to be subtle about it but after 10 min of finger curling and telling me how much she loved my natural curls, I finally got the guts to say something.
«Stop, I hate it» I said and a hush entered the salon that made me question if I said that out loud. Apparently I did. People looked over at me as if I said permanent wave or Aveda. I was ready to end it there but she continued haphazardly to style with little success. There was an attempt to do a blow out but my hair responded by getting bigger. Kinda like a ball of swept-​up cat hair from a hardwood floor growing with each sweep– on my head. I finally got up and asked to use the restroom. There I soaked my head in the sink (Honey Boo-​Boo style) and put in my trusty hair clips. I felt so frustrated I headed straight to the counter, dropped $ 15 on it, and slipped out the door. In the end I got the trim I wanted but a lot of useless fettering with the style. Worth the risk if u want something cheap and simple and have time.

I have gone to Phagans a handful of times for waxing and more recently, gettin’ my nails did. I have had positive and pleasant experiences each time…
Now, I am pretty particular about my eyebrows, but not so particular that I am not able to do utilize the fantastically low priced option of a cosmetology school to get these puppies taken care of! Not only that, but I really prefer to spend my money on other things, like getting my hair done… so phagans is a perfect option for everything else!)
Onto the good stuff… I LOVE Victoria at Phagans, she is so sweet and fabulous at what she does. My eye brows look great and I get compliments on them all the time! She is also the one who gave me very first Gel Manicure, which I also loved. The process was tedious but Victoria did an amazing job, my nails looked stellar and again, a ton of compliments! I would totally recommend her, if you are looking for a low price option for getting these little things done that, lets be honest, cost a pretty penny at other salons.
As for the establishment, eh, its alright. Nothing special, but is clean and friendly, most of all. Which matters, a lot!

I have gone to Phagans a handful of times, the first time for a wedding where I got my hair and makeup done. The did such a great job and I think it was something like $ 20 for an up-​do and makeup. Ridiculous deal!
Subsequently I have gone for haircuts here and there. I have always been pleased with their job, although one time I went in for a simple trim and a guy who has only been there for a few weeks cut my hair and I was there for 2+ hours! But come on, it’s $ 8 and you get the job done. This time, I had Ariane cut my hair. She is flipping amazing! She is a perfectionist like me, which is great. I trusted her completely and I left with a great haircut!
It’s definitely a hit or miss but in general they do a good job. Once in a while you hit the jackpot. I recommend Ariane. She’s a cool, diligent, meticulous hairstylist. She will be there until November.
